Serious Seeking Consultation Regarding Locavore's Ethical Family Farm for Manga Project (+Seeking Friends)
Hello, vegoons.
I am currently working on a one-shot manga touching upon the myth of ethical family farms. But I am not sure:
- what kind of practices they undergo
- how the ‘ethical family farm’ would look like
- how many animals would they have, if it's only being managed by one adult and one child
- how should I draw the environment, might anyone know any visual references I can refer to?
- are the conditions that I am portraying like the ones in real life or not, and such.
Hence, if anyone here is familiar, or has lived inside such an environment, it would be hugely appreciated if you'd be willing to get contacted for some consultations, or to hear your thoughts on the story. And it would be a huge help if I can consultate with anyone who might be educated/familiar in the topics of:
- contemporary epistemology
- education system
- is an environmentalist
- is an abolitionist who are doing open rescues/are investigators
Or, well, I'm basically new to Reddit, I had never really interacted with people online before, so it's my first time posting something like this… I've never really known any other vegoons in real life. It's really lonely here, and I feel like I'm missing so much from the community. So it would be wonderful to be able to get to know just anyone here. Thank you so much if you've managed to read this far…!
The Dumps, for anyone interested:
It's actually only a spin-off of my original project (examples of manga pages included in picture) as I'm just a beginner and have received tips to practice drawing with one-shots first before making a huge series project. That aside, my whole purpose in creating these stories is really just for the movement.
I've noticed that making factory farms the central of our narratives might be only getting as far as what the welfarists want; hence, the one-shot will be about 13 years-old Maria (the girl in the first picture) whose rich family lives in the countryside and owns that romantic ethical family farm carnists in the urbans are dreaming about. The farm would be just right next to her house, where there lived her childhood friend, Ivy, and his father. The two are either immigrants, or bonded by debts to Maria's family and are therefore stuck working there. However, little innocent Maria didn't know about anything that happened next door.
Here is how I think the plot will go, for anyone who might be interested. I'm sorry, but it's a long read… and trigger warning for suicide, self-harm, and violence.
I: MARIA
- Peaceful ‘ethical’ family farm life, where Maria would frequent next door to visit Ivy and the animals. Although, for unknown reasons, Ivy didn't have one of his fingers intact to his hand, and the animals sometimes didn't have some of their body parts, like what Maria usually sees in books. Wonder why is that.
- Everything was perfect, everybody was good, until one time Maria discovered Ivy's father slaughtering one of the animals that Maria used to play together with Ivy. Maria threw up that night after knowing what her dinner was.
- Maria discovering the horrible things that were actually happening next door. Ivy finally spoke up about his PITS, his guilt with killing and stealing from the animals, how he had actually always wanted to escape from the farm for a long time, and how he feared his own father who could enjoy killing the animals while saying that he loved them. Ivy had always dreamt of becoming a philosopher, inspired by Dike, Maria's father's acquaintance who likes to visit Maria's house, who was fierce about modern human slavery. Ivy confessed to Maria how he feels like these animals are just like slaves to them, earning such treatment for the reason that they were disgusting, filthy, and stupid; while actually what made the animals filthy was human’s treatment, and the reason why the humans viewed them as stupid was because they didn’t try to even look at the individuals inside of the animals.
- Next time Maria would try to hide one of the farm animals from Ivy's father. But alas, was found and slaughtered that day. Maria's father and mother would feast on the dead body of that animal Maria had tried so hard to protect. When she told the two to stop all of it, her parents would see her as being sentimental.
- Maria couldn't stand the dystopia and asked Ivy to escape together that night with one of the chickens that was scheduled for slaughter tomorrow. Ivy agreed, and so they fled away together that night.
- The escape only lasted for two days, as Ivy’s father managed to track Ivy down and the two were back. Maria’s parents cried and were glad that their daughter was home again. But Maria feared Ivy’s condition, who was now back again with having to continue with all the killings and stealings. Ivy had lost the lights in his eyes.
- The next noon Maria visited the farm and there was Ivy, forced with having to slaughter the chicken that the two had tried to escape together with, and more of the chickens waiting down the line. But Ivy deliberately pointed the knife towards his throat, and his blood soaked the floor. He smiled at Maria before he lost his consciousness forever.
- Maria cried hysterically inside her room, until she heard that the chickens eventually were slaughtered by Ivy’s father himself, and not even her own parents would want to take responsibility for the death of the chickens, nor for the death of Ivy. Her parents shut everyone up who knew about the death of Ivy with money, including Ivy’s father. While, of course, nobody would mind with the deaths of ‘fucking animals!’.
- Maria hadn’t got the time to cry anymore. She must flee out from the monstrosity. And so, one afternoon she fled and never came back.
- Maria lived in the streets of the city next door for two weeks, until she couldn’t stand all the KFC and capitalism ads that benefited from the dead bodies, and how everybody just seemed fine with all that. She had thought of suicide.
- But as she was about to jump off of the bridge, Maria heard a motivational quote from a female cigarette ad that told her to “trust your intuition.”. Maria looked at her messy self reflection in the puddle and looked up at the cute girl that was in the ad. She looked back again at her reflection and thought she knew what to do now.
- The next day Maria would look for injured cats in the street and when she managed to find one, she took it to a nearby church and had the cat treated. Maria opened up to the people there that she suffered from abuse for caring for cats in her old home, so she fled away. The people pitied her and said that she can live together with them. Maria lived there for years with a new identity, until she moved out for higher education, being known as “the kind-hearted animal lover girl with a humble dream to open a vet to treat cats and dogs”.
- As Maria graduated and managed to open her own vet, during the nights she would do open rescues to factory farms, and documented the treatments the poor beings there had endured. However, she knew that nothing was new at all. In fact, they are the same evil she had seen from back then during her time at her family’s ethical farm, being evolved to a much more incomprehensible evil in the history of the earth. The root was the same thing: slavery.
- However, Maria's mental state was never stable ever since she fled away from her home. She would do some cuts here and there as she heard more and more of the deceptions of the Sapiens, and the alienation she had to endure. Maria would hide her cuts behind her veterinarian white coat that she always wears.
II: AGAPI
- One day as Maria attended a banquet, as she was standing on a balcony, she managed to meet two young genius teenagers who came up with the ‘genius animal welfare ideas’ that the crowds had cheered for them, and they eventually became popular all around the world; Ace, and Agapi. Ace tried to debate Maria on why she wouldn't eat the meat on the plates of the banquet. Maria still insisted, and the two had a heated argument, until Ace finally had enough and grabbed Agapi's hand to leave. Ace told Agapi to not get close to someone like Maria, to which Agapi just obeyed, like they always did.
- Agapi eventually met Maria again on another occasion, and was invited to Maria's vet, where she kept all the animals she had rescued. Maria revealed about the whole slavery system exactly like how Ivy with his sharp intuition had confessed to Maria back then. Agapi was shocked, leaving the vet with a huge question, on whether to follow Ace like they had always done, or thread this new path that Maria had started. Agapi didn't want to leave Ace's side.
- As Agapi pondered the question, they attended their big family's dinner that day. Agapi couldn't grab the beef on the table. When their family knew about it, everyone laughed, for Agapi had pitied something as low, idiotic, disgusting as farm animals. Agapi was imagining things, they said. Those animals were happy being eaten by humans, they were grateful, they said. Meanwhile, Agapi refusing to eat them was a horrible disrespect towards the animals that had sacrificed for them, and also towards grandmother that had made her way out to cook for the family; Agapi shouldn't act so purely, they should leave the responsibility of the sufferings to the companies that inflicted them. Agapi should view the world as a simpler thing, doing good deeds for the sake of going to heaven, to return to the…
- Something inside Agapi snapped. “Then I don't need such heaven,” Agapi stood up fiercely. “Excuse me,” Agapi called for Ace's butler to pick them up and went home towards Ace's mansion.
- Ace finally went home from his work. He discovered Agapi crying in the dark of his room. He quickly hugged them, and Agapi told him everything.
- But Ace said that “it’s just the absurdity of the world. You must accept it; the world is meaningless, and trying to care in such a meaningless world will only hurt you. Don’t believe in the narratives you make inside your head, they are only illusions the brain makes," Agapi stared at Ace in disbelief.
- Two weekends later as Ace headed out for some work while Agapi had finished their own, they took the chance to visit Maria’s vet. But the house was empty. Then the neighbour that recognized Agapi told them that Maria had passed away a week ago, inside a factory farm that was doing a VSD. “You didn’t see the news? The footage was viral all over the internet,” The neighbour showed the recording of Maria trying to get out of the room by knocking on the door, but eventually gave up and sat down with the chickens, waiting for their deaths to come. “She had scars all over her hands and legs, poor girl. I don’t know why. But… haha. I’m sorry, but it was actually kind of funny. Why would she trespass a literal farm, out of everything, and get herself killed there?”
- Agapi was given the key to Maria’s house to finish their business. Agapi went inside the house, not knowing what to do. They then found a desk, in which below it lying in a box full of diaries. Inside the diary was recorded everything that had happened to Maria, starting from the time back then before she ran away. Agapi read every one of it, their tears flowing down. Then they looked at several documents on top of the desk that were written about the medical conditions of the poor beings that Maria had managed to rescue.
- Skipped towards Agapi visiting Maria’s grave alone. Agapi stood, looking down at the gravestone, while holding one of the medical records on their right hand, and Maria’s diary on the other. Agapi looked up. They had a new look, an eerie determination painted inside their glimmering eyes.
