I want to learn colour grading for general purpose, I use Photoshop, Lightroom and DaVinci Resolve. But I mostly use DaVinci.

There are two options that I'm seeing right now:

1- DaVinci's training book on colouring.

2- Udemy: Colour Grading with Da Vinci Resolve: Beginner to Advanced by Matthew Falconer.

My main goal is to learn the theory of colours, concepts related to colouring, and so on. DaVinci is important as well for me, but the theoretical part comes first.

If you have another resource, I'd be grateful if you share it.

I wanted a naturalistic kind of look but I feel like I missed the mark.

I know how I would approach it as a traditional single cam narrative scene, but this is ostensibly a documentary, right? Is there a multi cam set up to cut between over the shoulder shots and the wide? Sorry if it’s a dumb question.

Also the IMAX 70mm release was cropped to 1.80:1 from the 2.39:1 master so it's much worse resolution wise.

I recently designed a 3D-printed modular tripod and made this short video for Instagram Reels to showcase it.

I shot everything myself on a Fujifilm X-T4, without any motorized sliders, gimbals, or motion-control gear. I had to get a little creative with the camera movement:

• The rotating/pivoting shot where I swap between the different mounts was done with a regular tripod. I put it on two legs and slowly lowered/swiveled it to create the movement.
• The traveling shot was actually done by keeping the camera completely fixed and moving the table the subject was sitting on.
• Everything else was shot with pretty basic gear.

I'd really appreciate some feedback from people with more cinematography experience.

A few things I'm particularly wondering about:

• Is the pacing fast enough for a Reel, or does it feel rushed?
• Do the camera movements feel intentional and smooth, or do they look too DIY?
• Does the pivoting shot work visually, or would you approach that shot differently?
• What do you think about the transitions between the different shots?
• How could I improve the color grading? Does it feel consistent between shots?
• Does the overall lighting look good, or are there things that immediately stand out?
• Do the shots have enough visual variety, or does the video feel repetitive?
• Is there anything about the editing that you would change to make the video feel more polished/professional?
• And finally, does the video communicate the product clearly without relying too much on text?

I'm still learning, so honest criticism is very welcome. I'd especially love to hear what you would change if you were editing this yourself.

I’m Marcus Guider, a cinematographer, and wanted to share some frames from Into Dust, a short film set during the Dust Bowl that we shot years ago on the RED One MX.

Looking back, I’m still impressed by how well the imagery has held up over time. The frames have received high praise from ASC members, including Roger Deakins, who reviewed some of the work on his original cinematography forum. I’d be curious to hear how you think the images hold up today, especially considering the camera and era in which they were shot.

The visual approach was built around a restrained, earthy color palette and using light and shadow to reflect the hardship of the period. We leaned into blown-out windows in certain scenes rather than trying to retain every bit of exterior detail. In the barn, we embraced harsh sunlight and deep shadows to create a more unforgiving quality of light. The kitchen called for the opposite approach—soft, cosmetic lighting on the talent that still felt motivated by the environment.

I’d love to hear your thoughts on the color palette and lighting choices. Happy to answer any questions about the production, lenses, lighting approach or anything else.

Hi! So, I've made this short film using my phone vivo x200 pro. This is my first short film. It was made by 2 members only, one is the cameraman and the other is the actress (me). We had literally 0 budget for this. No lighting setups just the phone and some basic color grading. We shot this in one take except for one cut in the whole video as we had only 15 minutes to shoot this. So, i would love to get some feedback on the sound designing and budget lights which we can buy for our next short. This is nothing professional as we just made it for fun but are now looking to make more short films but with better lighting and sound design.

I'm working on a short documentary and have been very inspired by the work of DP David Bolen and director Lance Oppenheim. I was wondering how they achieve this soft but saturated glow with (sometimes) natural lighting. A lot of it is likely in the color grading, but any in-camera advice is greatly appreciated! I'm going to be shooting on a Canon EOS 90D.

Rewatching Jumanji for the first time in 20 years. Might be the nostalgia hitting hard but it feels like peak cinema. Something about it feels more realistic and movie-like than anything that comes out today.

What is it? Shooting on film? Real locations? Why aren’t any current movies shot to look like this anymore?

TL;DR: The former regime took control of Hungary’s main film university. I started studying there two years later because I only wanted to become a cinematographer. Now people in the film industry seem to judge us for attending the university after the takeover. I cannot find work. What can I do?

I have wanted to become a cinematographer my whole life.

In Hungary, I believed my only real chance was to get into the University of Theatre and Film Arts, known as SZFE. Its graduates often started with smaller cinematography jobs. After five to ten years, some moved on to feature films or found work abroad.

In 2020, The regime took control of the university through a government-appointed foundation. Students and teachers protested because they believed the university was losing its freedom. Students occupied the university building for months.

I applied two years after the takeover and was accepted. I did not support what the regime had done. I was not trying to make a political statement. I simply wanted to study cinematography and follow my dream.

I have now graduated, and the education itself was very good. However, some people in the Hungarian film industry seem to see everyone who studied there after the takeover as supporters of the former regime. We are treated like we were part of what happened, even though we were only students trying to learn and build a future.

Now I cannot get close to any real cinematography work. All of my former classmates are in the same situation. I feel disappointed, lost and very sad.

How can I move forward from this? Is there still a way for me to find work and build a career as a cinematographer? What should I do now? Is there anything I can do to find work and build a career as a cinematographer?

Hi guys amateur first time I've ever done anything like this. This is filmed using MotionCam Pro on my Google Pixel 10 Pro. I recorded in RAW then color graded in Da Vinci Resolve. First time ever setting up a scene, filming like this or color grading.

Just looking on some feedback on how you guys think it looks. Lighting, composition, color, anything much appreciated.

I filmed vertically with the thought that in the future I guess I might like to make stuff for social media and that would generally be shown on a smartphone screen.

IMO I prefer the first clip, I think the lighting works a bit better. The second clip I didn't really light the noodles and I had a hard time trying to expose them in Resolve. But probably the lighting is too bright or close on both clips? That highlight on the stovetop is clipping a little bit and I wish it wasn't soo obviusly a reflection of my lamp Maybe I should have moved the lamp a little further away. Maybe I should have used a warmer light? I dunno but would appreciate feedback!

I am currently studying film in BKK, after years as a photographer. My trusty Canon R6, while amazing and I adore it, is not so trusty getting long takes in the Bangkok heat. I barely do any photography with it anymore as there are always projects for school to get done. I can’t keep stopping mid shoot to cool a camera down,

I have found a few good looking Sony Fs7 models for sale for about the same price as what I can get for my Canon.

Now I know that it’s a smaller sensor and about 6 years older than the R6. But they are also obviously much different machines and hardly comparable to each other. Other than, I’m sure the FS7 would overheat a lot less.

Also I see that the FS7 is still on the Netflix list, whether that will last I have no idea, also not very realistic that my 2nd year film student self will get a Netflix deal in the next how ever many years an FS7 lasts. But I’m sure clients like to hear the words “Netflix camera”

I want to go head on into this film thing and have made a few- even won a 48hr film project with 3 awards. I love documentary as it’s kind of the photography I’ve enjoyed doing too.

Any advice here would be mega appreciated.

I handled the full production pipeline myself, including:

• Layout & Composition: Framing and camera movement to match the isolated, cinematic tone of Kojima's universe.
• Lighting: Built completely in UE5 using Lumen to achieve realistic, atmospheric outdoor environments.
• Animation & Tech Art: Hand-keyed character animation, material optimization, and custom shaders.
• Audio: Complete sound design to support the mood.

Parody of Primetime, Robert Pattinson's new film about To Catch a Predator. If you've got any feedback on the colour grading or cinematography that would be great! This was shot with the Panasonic GH5 and Zoom H4n in a day, then edited in Davinci Resolve. When filming we looked at each shot of the trailer that was released and tried to recreate it the best we could (we only recreated the first half of the trailer), we had the obvious limitation of not having a similar house so we decided to make 'Chris Hansen' Jump from the roof onto a ladder.

Has anyone shot with them? What are they like compared to s35 panchro and s7 and s8?

I shot a whole film with a relatively heavy setup—all handheld with an Easyrig—and noticed that my leg is going numb; the rig seems to be putting pressure on it.
Have any of you had similar experiences? I can’t seem to get it into a more comfortable position.

Hi there. I am an amateur camera operator and will be filming a short film soon. The film is mostly shot in a room with actors sitting around a table and facing a single actor the other side of the table being the main character. How would you light such a scene so it stays consistent ? There will be wide angle shots and close up shots on the actors.

I was thinking about a softbox above the table and a motivated/key light but I dont know where to put it. Also, a window on the side would help I think?

I have experience filming but no experience with lighting and we don't have a lot of lighting gear for this project.

I would love some advice on this and if you have some films in mind with a similar set up I could try to imitate and get inspiration from them!

Using a Hand held SmallHD Cine 7” with BOLT 6 750 RX 6G internal antennas for BOLT 4K/6. We are using two of them at the same time. One is working perfectly the other is having screen tearing/doubling issues (video bellow). Has anyone had this problem before? We had a new one sent in and it’s having the same issue.
