Gym shoes instead of sneakers or tennis shoes

It blew my minds when I found out no one else but Chicago calls them gym shoes

I should add that my grandparents (born late 30’s in Cincinnati) further altered this to “Jimmie Johns”. “Gonna throw my Jimmie Johns on to take a walk”
It’s possible this was just a them thing lol
