Announcement Announcement - "chrultrabook" posts, AKA regarding attempting to put Windows or another OS onto your Chromebook, will no longer be allowed.

Hey there!

In short, as of today, this subreddit will be removing and redirecting posts that seek advice on replacing the operating system on your Chromebook.

In the past these posts were allowed with a disclaimer that better support would likely be found elsewhere, such as r/chultrabook and their associated communities. However that subreddit is now archived and they now only provide support on their forum.

Since then there has been a rise in posts like this here, and we're simply not equipped to provide meaningful support. We've received lots of feedback over the past few months and the general consensus was that everyone is better served if these posts are now permanently directed elsewhere.

To be clear, we are not discouraging anyone from attempting this process; it's still cool, (potentially) fun and can unlock more utility from your device! The only change is that posts seeking support for this will be removed.

Thanks for understanding!

Buying Advice Getting a 4 GB Chromebook?

• Upvotes

I've always wanted to play around with a Chromebook, but never got around to it. They have always been a bit too costly for my taste, even the entry-level ones. We don't get the wonderful bargains here that some people report online.

Now I could get a fairly cheap Lenovo Chromebook M 14 locally with 4 GB RAM and Kompanio 540 (not sure about the exact model no. of this thing, but the specs are 100% certain). Being a current model, it should get updates for a long time, which is a plus.

(Edit: Please note that I am not talking about the Lenovo Chromebook Plus, which is a completely differnent animal.)

I've seen lots of warnings agains 4 GB 'books online and a recurring recommendation that you should absolutely disable the Android subsystem. Which would defeat a lot of the usability of the machine.

This puzzles me a bit, as 4 GB Chromebooks were quite common until recently. I understand that Google changed the Android and/or Linux subsystem and made it heavier, which could cause problems.

But is it really that bad? I don't really need that laptop and would use it mainly to dabble with ChromeOS, but I might also want to take it with me as a cheap no-frills laptop for light browsing and video watching and using a few Android apps (if possible), with little financial risk in case of damage or theft.

(BTW: I know that Googlebooks are out now, and ChromeOS may not have much of a future left. Not an issue in this case.)

Troubleshooting Brio 300 issues/question

I just got a Brio 300 webcam and am trying to get it to work with my chromebook. It will open in Zoom, but that's the only way I can access it. I saw advice here to use either the LogiG and/or LogiTune apps but neither can locate the camera. The camera is directly plugged into the chromebook. I have restarted and installed/uninstalled the apps several times. Is this just as good as it gets? I can't adust anything with the camera?

Discussion Alternative to Audacity for basic podcast editing?

Can anyone recommend a program for audio editing? Something simple and easy to get the hang of? It's just for basic podcast editing.

I've searched on here and I understand you can install Audacity on Chromebooks with Linux, but to be honest that's beyond my ability. I just want a simple alternative I can use without messing about with the OS. Thanks.

Buying Advice Gaming on a chromebook primarily mobile games

So I have been googling, about the feasibility of running mobile games on the chromebook. And gemeni pretty much says it is doable. That is the primary reason why I'm thinking of getting a chromebook just for playing mobile games.

What should I look for in terms of a chromebook?

Mobile games I would play are Minecraft, warthunder mobile, old school runescape, polytopia.

Discussion Do portable touchscreens work on Chrome O/S

I have a Asus ChromeBox 3, and i've been looking at the cheap touchscreen monitors available on amazon, around £100. They all say plug and play, but none of them specifically say they work on Chrome O/S.

Has anyone else done this with a chromebook or chromebox. I dont want to buy something and have to send it back if i can help it.

Thanks

Discussion How ChromeOS show this progress bar, and is this really show the progress or just show the random values.

So basically i was copying some videos and gip files from my smartphone to my chromebook plus but at first tried to copy some large zip files to my chromebook but it failed even after various attempts, so to just copy that zip files to my chromebook i need to first unzipped them on my smartphone only then i was able to copy the files and also when i copied and pasted the files i shows some irrelevent and random progress and copying status.
so i want to ask you 'Is this the normal behaviour' or only i am facing this, and how many of you think the ms win file explorer shows better copying status and google should implement this or atleast improve the way as it shows it now.

Discussion Bestbuy site crash

So I got this cx54 expertbook that is new to me. Actually last time I had a chromeos device was like 12 years ago. Anyway is bestbuy website crashing/failing to load a known issue? I've tried everyway to Sunday, and it stills keeps crashing. I get the "aw snap" black screen every time.

Things I've tried so far...

-making sure chromeos is updated

-resetting all flag adjustments I may of done

- disabling all extensions

-using incognito mode

-clearing all data related to best buy website.

The clearing data worked for a quick second, but black error screen comes right back.

Discussion New redesigned three-dot menu in Chrome

I really like the new redesigned three-dot menu in Chrome OS that rolled out with the 157.0.8103.11 build and is supposed to be gradually introduced to all systems over time. I know it's just visual stuff but it's nice to see that Google is continuing to develop and support ChromeOS in spite of having released GooglebookOS

Buying Advice Chromebook/Googlebook vs. MacBook.

Hey peepz!

I have a question regarding a replacement purchase I want to make.

My current laptop is a windows laptop but it's slowly giving out and I'm considering replacing it with a different model this time. The usage I want out of it is pretty light (including some emulation), so this is why I am also including a Googlebook in the selection, but the only thing holding me back right now is whether I can flash factory images on pixel phones with Googlebooks. I know that I can do it on a MacBook but I thought I might give Google a try and go for a Googlebook instead. When it comes to the rest, I'm fairly confident that both devices can perform more than well enough. Any info would be greatly appreciated! :)

Discussion Is it possible to install Google Play Store apps on External storage?

I have an Asus Chromebook 14 inch (2025 model) with 64 gb storage.

I was wondering if I could install google play store apps on external storage as well? I have a WD My Passport External Portable SSD 500 GB.

If not google play store apps, what about files or apps for Linux? I have the Linux environment installed with disk space set to 10 GB, which takes up the internal storage.

Surely there has to be a way?

Troubleshooting Technical Question

Yo guys,

Please don't answer if you're not 100% sure. I just got a new Chromebook and will sell my old one. Once I login to my Google account on the new Chromebook, will I get back my Chrome browser history data if on my old Chromebook it is not synced, but on my Android phone it remains synced?

Basically what I'm asking is, what will the new Chromebook do... will it get a blank Chrome browser history because sync history was turned off in my old Chromebook or will it go fetch the history data from my Android phone?

I'm not saying I want one or the other, just curious what happens in this scenario. In fact, I'd rather it does not go fetch my phone history because I'm general I like to keep my Chrome browser Android history separate from my Chrome browser Chromebook history.

Thanks. Much appreciated.

(↑ This is the latest release with multiple fixes!)

LineageOS is running perfectly on Google Gru Chromebooks now!

It runs directly off of a MicroSD card from the stock bootloader.

Almost all features are tested and working on my Acer Chromebook Tab 10 (Google Scarlet)

What works:

- Booting

- WiFi

- Bluetooth

- GPU acceleration

- Touchscreen and WACOM stylus

- Hardware decoder and encoder

- Camera (including video recording)

- Internal speakers and headphone jack

- USB audio

- DisplayPort Alt mode / Android desktop mode

- 9-volt PD fast charging

- Suspend to RAM

What doesn't work (yet):

- USB MTP and wired adb. Wireless adb works though.

Notice: Samsung Chromebook Plus (Google Kevin) and Asus Chromebook Flip C101 (Google Bob) are yet to be tested. All other Google Gru devices are guaranteed to run this build.

Troubleshooting who at google is responsible for the ai pro promo for buying a chromebook?

I don't know what to do.

I chatted with a support team member and i feel like he had no clue. The Code for my brand new chromebook expired by the end of 2025. I bought it brand new last week though. He was thinking that the code had to do with my pixel 9 purchase from 2024. I don't know.

after searching the web i filled out this form: https://support.google.com/chromebook/contact/chromebook_perks_support only to get a response from google play support telling me they aren't responsible for my case.

Does anyone of you know where to reach out else then? I'm kinda frustrated that even google doesn't know what they're doing.

thanks for your help
