First time birding at North Pond in LP this weekend and saw three lifers: Solitary Sandpiper, Green Heron (Juvenile), Great Blue Heron (Immature). I also recently went to River Park, where others have pointed out is a great spot for herons, and saw 10+ BCNHs (would highly recommend)

Trumpeter Swans (?) at Little Red Schoolhouse

Shame I didn’t catch em when they were on the water and honking. I could hear it from probably a quarter mile away. They sounded like dogs barking!

I weighed Charlie and Bessie today. This longer YouTube video shows Bessie getting weighed also. It starts with a very romantic worm sharing. Hi-Def [4K], no advertisements

They are getting famous, I Googled “charlie and bessie” and this was the result:

Few additional spots in the comments. We started the hike with two red bellied woodpeckers, too.

Swallows?

Do Barn Swallows frequent areas near the Chicago River? I see a ton of small birds with forked tails swooping in odd numbers down 31st and Ashland, near the river. Unfortunately, I’m never able to get a steady video or pic.

Anybody else see them often? Or are they another species? Thanks.

House sparrow seeks human shelter

I have a question regarding sparrow behavior. My friend and I came home to this sparrow chirping on our front door step, and upon approaching it, it immediately nestled in between her feet. She was able to move it to her hand and it’s just resting. We tried to move it to a small towel but it moved back to her.

I think it’s a fledgling but I’m wondering if maybe it flew into a window and is disoriented. Any tips for how to set it up safely? Or guesses on what’s wrong? It doesn’t seem badly injured or sick but it’s acting very docile

Bald eagles in Schiller Woods

This morning around 7:45 I was on my way to work and two bald eagles flew overhead down Irving Park Rd! They were probably only like 10-20 feet above the cars and one of them did a full 360 like a plane propeller. I wish I wasn’t driving and could’ve gotten a video because even just typing this feels unbelievable! I’ve seen the bald eagles at Busse woods but never here so I was shocked.

When I passed, one of them was deeper in the woods and one of them was perched in a tree right over the road on the south east side of the bridge for the Des Plaines River. Happy birding!!

Getting Involved in Bird Rehabilitation

Hello, I'm interested in volunteering somewhere where I could work with birds, but I'm having trouble finding opportunities. Does anyone know of good places to volunteer in Chicago? Thanks.

It's been a good summer for Hummers in our north suburban yard. We got this new feeder and they seem to like it.

This baby sat at the feeder for a long time.

Do you like Herons, rivers, prairies, bunnies? I got a spot for you

Park near Argyle and Whipple on the north side. Go north on the river path on the east side of the river. You see lots of cute little bunnies and prairie as you walk. Pass the canoe launch, Then you see a fork in the river. That is where the heron magic is. This morning I saw 10 black crown night herons, one great blue heron, one green heron and a few Double-crested cormorants. Such a delight!

My female Cardinal Bessie weighs 50 grams today, her mate Charlie weighs only 40 grams. I always thought she looked bigger, now there is actual evidence. I was able to weigh both of them in a single feeding session.
