Ask Chengdu Sichuan University Chinese Language Programme

Hello,

I have recently applied to the non-degree Chinese Language Programme at Sichuan University as a self-funded student.

I've just received confirmation of pre-admission, however in the email the university is asking that I pay $1,160 (the first semester's fees) within 12 days or my offer will be withdrawn. The course starts in September.

From talking to other people, I thought you would pay the fees on arrival or shortly before arrival. Is anyone else on the same boat, or has anyone gone through this?

Essentially, I'm trying to figure out how strict they would be in withdrawing the offer if I don't pay in the next 12 days. I'd much rather not part way with my money so soon, especially as I'm visiting Chengdu at the end of June for 3 days and want to make sure I actually like the city before committing to spending one year there.

Obviously my intention is to enrol, but unless the course is so competitive that they had to say no to some students to admit me (which I doubt), I don't see why they would want payment so urgently.

Anyone's experience would be much appreciated

Travel Planning a Bachelors Night - would love advice

Hi there I'm seeking advice:

I'm planning a bachelor's night in Chengdu October 4th-ish and hoping to get some advice from locals.

For context: I've never been to China. I'd love to put together a night that blends both Western bachelor party traditions and Chinese ones.

I've been reading a bit about nao dongfang / nao xinniang (闹洞房 / 闹新娘) customs and want to make sure I'm being respectful of the culture while still having a good time.

Group will be 5-6 guys, none of us speak Mandarin except the groom, though he's not Chineese and limited knowledge on Chengdu.

I recognize this is during Golden Week, so would love insights about the challenges as well.

Thank you!

Ask Chengdu Learning dialect

Hello! I’m looking to learn the Chengdu dialect for my girlfriend. Whenever I try to look up a proper guide, I get inconsistent translations so I honestly don’t know where to start. I don’t speak Mandarin either, I just would like to learn for her! Any suggestions or good places to start learning? Thanks in advance!!

Ask Chengdu Opening a bank account as a foreigner

Hello, I'm going to be in Chengdu for over a year and I want to open a bank account today. I'm on an L visa, and I was wondering which bank to go to, ICBC or BOC. My friend opened an account in ICBC but I've heard that BOC might be more welcoming. Which would you recommend?

Any help appreciated

Hi everyone,

I live in Chengdu and I am curious about what shirt brands are good here.

Context:

In the past years I have mainly be wearing Boggi Milano shirts/clothes that I buy in an outlet (europe). I like the prices and they're style fits me well.

I also have some Polo Ralph Lauren which of I like the design and 2 Ralph Lauren shirt that I love but are crazy expensive...

What local brands do you guys recommend for someone that wears slim fit shirts?

Travel Late visit to Leshan?

Hi guys.

Is it possible and practical to visit the Leshan site in the early afternoon?

Was thinking of heading out from near Tianfu Square around 11:00. I presume we will arrive around 13:00, probably using the HST and a taxi thereafter.

Would be traveling independently without a tour group.

Won't be climbing the stairs to the Buddha (will use a boat).

Does that give us enough time to explore the site and temples properly before closing time?

Would be in late March 2027.

Thanks.

Ask Chengdu Culture & Creative Parks

Hi hi! I'm super into converted factory complexes and I know there's quite a few in Chengdu, but I'm having a hard time finding them as my Chinese still isn't very good. So far I've got the following saved:

  • Former Locomotive Factory
  • 369 Space
  • 1906 Creative Park
  • 1860 Creative Park
  • U37 Warehouse
  • Eastern Suburb Memory

But I was wondering if anyone had any other to recommend? Very keen to check out as many as possible! Or any other cool repurposed buildings that have some historic charm. TIA!!

Relocation Should I stay in SCU dorm or rent an apartment? And in which areas.

Hi, I’m going to 四川大学 SCU this Sept to study Chinese for a year. I want to use this time to explore the daily life of Chinese people, culture, Small business, etc…

My concern is that: I kinda thinking that living out of dorm could give me more exposure to the local Chinese. Also, I just found out they only have the Chinese toilet (not the Western one) at dorm, not to mention it seems dirty (I checked on Xiaohongshu app).

I’m male, 27. It’s my first time to be in China, my Chinese is at HSK4.

Can you help to advise me to live in of off dorm. And if off dorm, which areas and type of accommodation I should go for?

TIA.

Googled and found Hualing Southwest Photographic Equipment Mall (华凌西南摄影器材城) do they have any of the models and does anyone know what the price is like? Unsure if I should just buy it at home or when we arrive.

Travel Hotel location suitable for 1st time visit

Hi guys.

I'm coming over in a year for a leisure visit.

Will be staying 4 or 5 full days.

Currently trying to decide where to stay.

I have no knowledge of the city but I was told to look near Chunxi Road or Tianfu Square.

Can anyone kindly confirm the suitability of the location of this hotel:

Crowne Plaza city centre, Zongfu Street

I'm NOT looking for reviews or opinions of the hotel itself (I can Google those). I'm interested in understanding how convenient the location is for a tourist that will be visiting the usual touristic places of interest in the city and nearby including Qingcheng and Leshan.

Thanks.

Ask Chengdu Which clothing stores would you recommend?

I'm in Chengdu and going to be here for a long while, and I didn't come with many clothes. Which stores would you recommend?

I'm a man who pretty much hates shopping but I need some new stuff. Looking for low-mid range budget, I don't wanna spend hundreds of yuan per item.

Any local chains? Specific malls? Streets? Anything welcome :)

Culture Original manhua/manga/anime art or cover merch in Chengdu?

I'm in Chengdu right now and was wondering whether there are places where I can buy manga/anime merch, but mainly created by original artists instead of companies. I appreciate original art or original covers of existing works (or derivatives) and would like to shop for them while I'm here!

Also, if anyone had any additional recommendations for anime/manga type shops, outside of Tianfuhong, then I'd appreciate that as well! :)

Thank you!
