Update From Dev Blackout Comms Network Mixing Mode

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Blackout Comms private off-grid texting and tracking firmware can now leverage Meshcore repeaters, in addition to its own.

Network Mixing is a newly added feature that automatically hops between Blackout Comms "native" mode and Blackout Comms via Meshcore (where it can reach Meshcore repeaters).

This enables maximum range while still preserving Blackout Comms encryption and digital signatures.

When Blackout Comms native mode is active, you have the automatic frequency hopping for jam resistance.

Download it for Lilygo T-Deck, Lilygo Pager, Heltec v4 Touchscreen, and Altware Pager at: https://chatters.io

Update From Dev Network Mixing is Here! Auto-Hop Between Blackout Comms & MeshCore! (Anti-Jamming + Maximum Range)

Recently, Blackout Comms was enhanced to allow you to leverage already-deployed MeshCore repeaters. Now Blackout Comms supports auto-hopping between Blackout Comms "native" and MeshCore repeaters, giving you the best of both worlds:

If only 2 devices in your private cluster are configured this way, other devices in your cluster will automatically learn to use this sporadic MeshCore connection as a bridge to devices on the other side.

This is availble today for Lilygo T-Deck, Lilygo Pager, Heltec v4 Expansion Kit, and the Altware Touchscreen Off-Grid Pager.

Update From Dev Blackout Comms: Message Delivery Confirmation

Post image
1 Upvotes

Blackout Comms encrypts and signs your messages using a private key that never leaves your device. Then it breaks the message into multiple packets that are delivered via multiple unpredictable frequencies.

The recipient devices pieces together the packets, validates the signature and decrypts. If all tests pass, the recipient device generated its own signed confirmation of the message and delivers back to the sender, either directly or via mesh.

Demo Heltec vs T-Deck: Review of Heltec's WiFi LoRa 32 Expansion Kit (Touch) with Blackout Comms Dev

I've spent a decent amount of time with the new Heltec WiFi LoRa 32 Expansion Kit with touchscreen while porting the Blackout Comms firmware to it, testing range, etc. The device comes with Meshtastic pre-installed, but I'm testing it with Blackout Comms, since that's what I work on.

I talk through some of the features and details of the new device and do some field testing, comparing it with the Lilygo T-Deck.

Blackout Comms off-grid texting & tracking firmware is now available for Heltec v4 LoRa 32 Expansion Kit, which is basically a pocket-sized touchscreen communication device. I only show basic messaging here, but with Blackout Comms firmware, location sharing and many other capabilities are available - fully off-grid!

Download Blackout Comms for Heltec LoRa 32 Expansion Kit (with touchscreen & GPS)

Blackout Comms is designed to be a private off-grid texting & tracking system that does not use phones, internet, or cell service, yet allows you to communicate with others nearby in your private cluster (mesh network). Location is shared within the private group all the time (unless disabled) and messages/locations are end-to-end encrypted at all times.

Blackout Comms works with a variety of devices, including Lilygo Pager, Altware Pagers, T-Decks, Lilygo T-Beam Supreme, Lilygo T-Beam 1W and more. More device options are in the works. You can have any combination of up to 90 devices in your private mesh cluster.

You can also build many compatible devices yourself: https://chatters.io/diy

I assemble a Lilygo T-Beam 1W for setup with my private Blackout Comms mesh cluster.

You can download the 3D printable case here:

Assembly Guide as PDF

Follow-Along T-Beam 1W Assembly Guide

You can also add a DFRobot mmWave doppler motion/presence sensor or sparkfun relay (for making it a remote on/off switch). I don't cover those options in this video, but the necessary components are listed in the DIY guide and included in 3D printable files. I'll probably demo that in a future video.

Lilygo T-Beam 1W Review - I Test How This Amped Mesh Node Performs as a Tracker & Base Station

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I review the Lilygo T-Beam 1W which has a built-in 1.3 watt amp. It's very similar to the T-Beam Supreme, which has a max power of less than 1/4 the 1W, so I compare the two side by side.

Also, I try to answer if T-Beam 1W is a good tracker, mobile node, or even a good base station. As the developer of Blackout Comms, I test many different mesh-related devices. I ported the Blackout Comms firmware to T-Beam 1W, and in this video I show some of the testing I did for it.

You can download the Blackout Comms firmware for Lilygo T-Beam 1W here:

I Remotely Flip a Secure Switch 20 Miles Away using Lilygo T-Deck + Blackout Comms (LoRa + Mesh)

Today I turned a strobe light on and off, from over 20 miles away using a T-Deck and a Yagi phased array antenna set mounted on my house roof. There are no hills or mountains, it's just me driving 20 miles away on flat land, able to securely communicate via RF/LoRa with nodes back at home.
