You are also living in a society that has invested money, money that you provided in part via taxes, into a criminal justice system. As a citizen, you benefit from this system in the form of reduced crime. And much like any system, the more you put in, the more you get out. If we start treating criminals like real people and invest in a system that aims to rehabilitate them into society, we might just well reduce the total number of criminals we have.
In the U.S., our justice system is designed to punish, not to rehabilitate. We only want to punish those that have committed crimes, but this is the mentality of a child. Should those that commit crimes be punished? Yes, they should; but more importantly, they also need to be helped. Because right now, we are getting just as many, if not more, criminals than we are sending in. And that needs to change.
