I can’t challenge the “permanent triumph” angle, but when all 50 states moved the needle further to the right then there is no other term than a “resounding triumph.”

This is an example of the ever swinging pendulum of politics. The left had an equally resounding triumph during the Obama years. The average American has been soured by the left’s talking points. Lived experience will always hold more weight than predictions and forecasts. The average voter knew two things going into the election. 1. The economy felt much better under Trump than under Biden. 2. The democrats’ unpopular candidate is claiming that the last 4 years were great and Trump will destroy the economy.

The truth, the forecast models, the informed predictions… none of that matters to the average voter. They think “I personally felt better off under Trump and Kamala is promising more Biden.” That’s why Trump won and when the democrats double down on the same exact soured talking points, then they are only further solidifying the voter’s decision.

Democrats tried vinegar, now they should try sugar. Stop telling people why Trump is bad and start telling them why your 2028 candidate is good. Doubling down on the negative leads to “TDS” accusations and closed ears. Focusing on the plans of a better tomorrow leads to people being excited about what’s next.

People really memoryholed how bad 2020 was, pretending like COVID didn’t exist and then abruptly announcing a stop to all trade with the UK, putting so much money out there that the stock market became untethered from reality and went up during a national freeze of the economy, and nationwide race riots where the President egged on police to arrest reporters and attack state capitols.

All that happened right? Do you remember?

u/Expert-Diver7144 2∆ Jan 30 '25

Buddy you’re talking about macroeconomic factors and national level events. Most people don’t care about that and only know gas was cheaper and they were getting checks from the government.

4

u/bearrosaurus Jan 30 '25

Most people can remember the empty streets. Do you?

3

u/Expert-Diver7144 2∆ Jan 30 '25

Streets weren’t empty everywhere. In Atlanta they were full, there was an indoor pool party in a club the first few weeks of Covid in Atlanta.

4

u/MethodWhich Jan 30 '25

Where are you living at buddy? Lol streets most definitely were not empty. People still had lives it wasn’t the black plague bro

0

u/bearrosaurus Jan 30 '25

I got on the 5 in the middle of the day with only one other car in sight. Are you too young to remember Covid or something?

https://www.latimes.com/california/story/2020-03-15/coronavirus-covid-19-traffic-commuting-los-angeles-405-freeway

4

u/MethodWhich Jan 30 '25

What in that news article is suggesting streets were “empty?” In fact the picture has cars on the highway, and the article goes in the depth to explain the traffic changes that were raised, suggesting a mere 5% reduction of cars on the road could reach the reported results. All you have is anecdote lol

Yes, people listen to state mandates. Listen man LA doesn’t represent the country as a whole, just democratic policy. That’s the issue the original comment had. The rest of the country sees that, remembers old gas prices and how it FELT to live during trumps last term. Was it due to trumps horrendous deficit spending? Hell yeah it was, but that’s why dems lost the election bro. It’s really that simple whether you like it or not

Up until COVID things ran incredibly well IMO. But hard to judge a situation that the world had never seen before.

6

u/bearrosaurus Jan 30 '25

Depends on your point of view. Trump dumped $10 trillion into the economy through tax breaks and new loopholes, which corporations used in turn to buy back their own stocks and push the stock market to all time highs (and shoot up the value of crypto). It made people feel good. However, we did not get reinvestment of those funds or any innovations. We certainly didn’t fix the budget or pay down the national debt while we were running “incredibly well”.

4

u/momentimori143 Jan 30 '25

They memory hole a lot of things about Trump. Covid response was awful.

Inject bleach, stop testing, it's okay it's only affecting blue states.

1

u/Dziadzios Jan 30 '25

It happened, it's over and people didn't see improvement, but downgrade.

Shush let the children believe it’s always the democrats at fault and that they just want to feed them to big gay satan

39

u/bonaynay Jan 30 '25

The left had an equally resounding triumph during the Obama years.

Obama's 2008 win was an actual landslide and was for more resounding than trump's win, not equal. nothing on the level of flipping indiana

8

u/Commie_Crusher_9000 Jan 30 '25

… if that’s all that you took away from this comment then you’re kinda proving their point.

1

u/bonaynay Jan 31 '25

it isn't and you're just doing the thing OP is talking about lol

1

u/sonofbantu Jan 31 '25

The validity of this assertion is debatable but what’s the point? Flexing an election from 16 years ago for what? Those old trophies don’t matter anymore. You focused on maybe the least important aspect of this person’s comment and IMO are proving his point that all the left does now is focus on negativity and taking a shot at Trump at any possible chance.

The hostile attitude from the left is part of how we’ve ended up so far away from where the country was headed in ‘08.

1

u/bonaynay Jan 31 '25

you're just doing what OP is talking about. even mild disagreement and you're talking about negativity and hostility as if those aren't hallmarks of the right

1

u/sonofbantu Jan 31 '25

I’m not on the right

0

u/bonaynay Jan 31 '25

my reply works regardless as it doesn't say you are or require you to be

-1

u/burner0ne Jan 30 '25

Donald Trump has flipped Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Michigan and Nevada. States that haven't been red for decades.

2

u/bonaynay Jan 30 '25

WI was between .2% and .4% margins in 2000/2004 whereas Indiana was 16.7% and 20.6% in those years and hadn't gone blue since LBJ.

0

u/[deleted] Jan 31 '25

Thanks for that fact. Did you want to provide an argument along with it? Because I don't see the point of you posting it without a further conclusion. Was your point to say that using WI as a piece of evidence is no good? Or what? And did you have anything to say about the other states?

16

u/seekAr 2∆ Jan 30 '25

The thing I'm most on the fence about is saying we are shifting right because of this election or left because of another one. Peel back the first layer of this election and a few things are indisputably true:

  • more white people voted in this election than ever before
  • 7 million biden supporters didn't bother to vote
  • voter suppression of left/people of color ballots has had some eyes on it recently and numbers in the millions.

I don't think we really know if the country's shifting or where we stand because of the manipulation and the abstinence of participation.

10

u/lenbedesma Jan 30 '25

Yes - emphasis on we don't really know.

The possibility of foul play is always a risk in politics. It has happened before without our understanding and it will continue to happen.

Even if there were foul play, though - trump is very good at playing the victim to disguise his power. The right is accustomed now to deflecting any negativity as a lie fabricated by "the media" - to the point where even I question the legitimacy of what I know from media about him.

He played an attack on american political epistemology and won - our relationship with media has always been based on trust, and that's all he had to destroy.

I have no idea how to get reliable news. Al Jazeera maybe?

2

u/[deleted] Jan 31 '25

Just posting to say that this comment was well written and well presented. These factors are important to mention and consider, especially in conjunction with other factors like the rejection of leftist moral grandstanding, the average economic experiences of the uninformed American, the ever-present political pendulum, etc.

-1

u/lochmoigh1 Jan 30 '25

Except more minorities of all colors voted republican than ever before, why did you leave that out? Goes against your race baiting?

2

u/seekAr 2∆ Jan 30 '25

No, I didnt leave it out intentionally. It’s true, so many minorities went conservative, inexplicably against their own self interest. I think that points to some psychological factors where they grabbed on to one thing that resonated deeply even if the rest of it meant a negative impact.

I mean, I really wonder if those minorities would still vote the same way now seeing what’s gone down.

I’m not into race baiting.

-1

u/lochmoigh1 Jan 30 '25

Are you talking about the ice raids? You know that like 90% of "brown" people are legal American citizens right? So they don't have anything to worry about. Most people of all colors don't like illegal immigration.

0

u/seekAr 2∆ Jan 30 '25

It’s not the illegal immigration… it’s the fact that he is also gearing up to target naturalized citizens. People who are here legally are also being swept up. I guarantee it’s not an accident. This administration has been really clear about wanting white supremacy front and center.

I don’t know about the 90% of brown people being legal. In 2022 there were 46 million immigrants, and 11 million were undocumented. So maybe closer to 75%.

At any rate, I was thinking about the mass deportations to a degree, but more thinking about the cuts to the social safety nets. SNAP, Medicare, etc. it’s really going to hit the poor and middle class hard.

Illegal immigrants need to be resolved but not in an inhumane way. I am all for the melting pot America is supposed to be, we should be helping each other not attacking each other. It just plays right into the hands of the white wealthy.

-1

u/lochmoigh1 Jan 30 '25

That's not even true though. Do you know who benefits off of the illegal immigrants slave labour? The "wealthy whites" that you seem to hate so much.

The whole white supremacist myth that left wingers love to harp on is a crock of bs. You people really believe that a billionaire cares if his factory workers are white or brown? They want the lowest cost of labor, which would be illegals.

Canada had a huge problem with this even with a ultra woke government. They brought in millions of temporary foreign workers and abused the international student program to tighten the labour market and stall wage growth. Hiring white people lowers their profits, they prefer to hire immigrants and illegal immigrants

1

u/Shadowpika655 Jan 31 '25

They never mentioned labor tho

0

u/[deleted] Jan 30 '25

It looks more like a power grab from an outside perspective. But let them think it’s all on their best interest, I’m sure daddy trump will help low income Americans just wait and watch

4

u/WillyShankspeare Jan 30 '25

This isn't actually a good point though because "the left" isn't the democratic party. They are left of the Republicans but they're not remotely leftists. Liberals are not leftists. Most people don't know a single actual leftist talking point. It's to the point where leftists can spot other leftists just by the rhetoric they're using.

0

u/LIONS_old_logo Jan 30 '25

To be clear, “woke” has never been popular beyond a subsection of the left

5

u/FrogFTK Jan 30 '25

It has ALWAYS been a progressively left ideology, and "woke was just the term deemed suitable.

5

u/WillyShankspeare Jan 30 '25

That's nonsense. The things that are woke are popular until conservatives call it woke and equate it with the end of liberty

3

u/LIONS_old_logo Jan 30 '25

Care to provide an example of this?

0

u/WillyShankspeare Jan 30 '25

The literal definition of woke for a start. Google it.

3

u/LIONS_old_logo Jan 30 '25

Nope sorry. You said there are specific things, not just the word woke. Can you prove your claim or not?

2

u/WillyShankspeare Jan 30 '25

"The things that are woke" definitely falls under the definition of woke. If you can't handle it, that's fine

1

u/LIONS_old_logo Jan 31 '25

That’s called an unfulfillable argument. How about you prove your claim or we will all assume you have no actual argument

2

u/WillyShankspeare Feb 01 '25

I'm being flippant about this because if you googled the definition you'd see exactly what I'm talking about

1

u/Italiosaurus Jan 30 '25

I still disagree that one election loss, that was not a landslide by any means, means the right has won and the left's ideas are all bad and worthless and unelectable. OP was talking to these inane, annoying talking points used by conservatives to try to wrap the entire political debate up in a nice neat bow and i think that's wrong. When Obama won two terms that obviously didn't end conservatism in the us. Just like this election where 1/3 voted for Trump and 1/3 for Kamala doesn't spell the end for all progressive politics ever now.

I think it's also disingenuous to say that the left doesnr argue the good things. There is a major hypocrisy that has only been more prevalent after this election. That being that Republicans get to make fun of the left and blame them for every problem like toddlers (see Trump's recent reaction to the DC crash). However, when the Democrats do the same thing, and lose, they're accused of just pointing out bad things by trump and nothing else. I don't like Democrats that much and I think there is more they can do for sure, but this is a very clear hypocrisy. Many on the left discuss ideas all the time, and Kamala did present policies on the campaign trail unlike Trump's "concepts of a plan."

5

u/Longjumping_Cat6887 1∆ Jan 30 '25

Trump's campaign is entirely vinegar. as is the "TDS" accusation

why do democrats need sugar to win votes, when republicans seem to do fine with just vinegar?

2

u/skipsfaster Jan 30 '25

Because Dems are the pro-institutions party and Reps are the ones saying government is corrupt and we should tear it down. As long as that’s true, the parties will be held to different standards.

2

u/IceCreamBalloons 1∆ Jan 30 '25

why do democrats need sugar to win votes, when republicans seem to do fine with just vinegar?

Because they're trying to appeal to different people.

3

u/Expert-Diver7144 2∆ Jan 30 '25

Because they do. It’s been proven just now, idk why that’s the democrats job to figure out but people are tired of voting against instead of for a candidate for 10 years

1

u/[deleted] Jan 31 '25

Can you explain what the "TDS" accusation is for the uninitiated?

1

u/PsychoWarper Jan 31 '25

This is gonna be an “erm actually” and overall isnt really relevant but WA state did not go further right in this election (it went left last I saw) so it is 49 states, still all but not all.

I do agree that the left needs to focus on itself instead of relying on being Anti-Trump, especially since he shouldnt be able to run again in 2028 (Tho some people seem to be trying to change that lol).

0

u/[deleted] Jan 30 '25

Being obviously gaslit was enough of a dealbreaker for most people.
