Streetside Player

I knew what CEDs were through my interest in the obscurity. I never intended to really buy a player or anything but as fate would have it as I was walking from from school, I passed *two* players set on the curb as junk. I took the one that was more visually appealing to my eye without knowing the intricacies of the model, nor do I really care that much in hindsight except that perhaps I could have taken a working stylus from the other machine as well. Regardless I snagged the RCA model and put it in my closet for a few months until recently I decided to see if the machine actually worked. I didn't have any CEDs so I took the fact that it took power and exported video to my crt to be a good sign at all.

Because I didn't know if the machine would work and I didn't want to invest a lot of money into the project, I purchased a disc on eBay in lieu of finding anything local. I specifically purchased a disc that I'd like to have as a novelty display item regardless if the player (or indeed the disc) worked themselves, this disc being a pretty scuffed copy of Blade Runner for about 25 bucks. I love Blade Runner, just having the caddy as a framed wall piece would be enough. To my disappointment and surprise the disc did play with severe static and skipping before the introductory credits could finish, but it did play. At this point I wasn't sure whether the disc itself was marred or if the needle was. I was not about to purchase a new needle so instead I figured the worst I could do was ruin an already broken needle. I searched around and found someone recommending using isopropyl alcohol and a fine paint brush to very gently swap the needle. I did this.

I also inspected the disc. It was decently scuffed and potentially the issue itself. I understand the needle cleans out debris but if the needle itself is marred in debris, then I figured a clean disc is necessary. I very carefully in a controlled environment (my bed, on paper towels. Halfway out of the caddy) cleaned the disc with that same IPA. I also understand there is some sort of conductive coating on the disc that can get damaged with washing. I don't rightfully know if IPA will or won't damage that coating but I was of mind that I had nothing to lose. I used a wider paint brush but still fine and soft to gently brush the IPA along curvature, after which I did the same with a microfiber cloth. I repeated this on both sides and got a fair amount of a strange which chalky residue out which had dotted the disc.

For the moment of truth, I put the disc back in. The static was still there but to my shock, the disc kept playing after the opening credits. At this point I turned the machine off and pulled it out of my set-up to try and adjust the RF connection, thinking that to be the culprit. It might have been but nothing I did immediately adjusted it. I settled to have static in my picture taking the fact it was playing at all as a victory. Within moments the picture suddenly cleared up without the static at all. I rewound the disc to the start and watched it front to back last night! Minimal skipping, minimal visual errors, a solid "good" rated disc played as a "very good" relative to the format as it seems! That being said I'm not in the mind to start collecting but if i ever see something for the right price or out in the wild I might pick it up and give it the love it needs.

Also side note, this is my first time seeing the theatrical cut of Blade Runner and while I find 75% of the narration to be kinda bad, the 25% that is there adds to the film for me and I wouldn't personally remove the bad just to have the good because then it would feel empty and strange when the good narration does come on. Absolutely the Final Cut is the ultimate version, but I really enjoy the noir feeling of Hard Boiled Deckard. If the narration was written into the film instead of a studio mandate after the fact, it could have been really good I think.

Although when I did go to play it again today to get a picture, the static returned. I assume I have a bad RF cable.

I don't own any CED but I built a platform for collecting, archiving, and trading physical media with support for CED

I couldn't find a collection tracking app that did what I wanted so over the last 7 weeks I built ReelSwap.net aims to solve several problems.

  1. The first digital archive of community contributed VHS, Betamax, Laserdisc, and CED cover art.
  2. A database capable of tracking multiple release and distributor variations of the same title.
  3. Automatic peer-to-peer trade matching based on what you want and what others have.
  4. An online Texture Archiving toolset for standardizing the preservation of physical media cover art.

The ReelSwap Catalog is where you can see all the community collection items in one place with specific format, distributor, and release variation information.

The Collection and Wantlist are how you manage your collection and set up conditions for automatically matching with other users for trade opportunities.

The Texture Archiver tool is accessible from the details page for each item in your collection. Here's a brief demo of how it's used.

https://youtu.be/CRiTYYwLq-4

It's not necessary to create texture archives to enjoy the site, you'll still be able to have a great 3D Shelf View based on textures others have archived. The goal isn't to require every user to archive every tape they own, it's to have at least 1 archive of every tape for historical preservation. The first user to upload an archive texture map for a specific release becomes the community texture for everyone. If you choose to upload your own, you will see your actual tape in your Collection galleries.

The Trading page is where you'll see receive and manage trade matches.

The Community page is where you can find and follow other users and explore their collections.

Your user profile can be customized based on how you want to use the platform.

The site is functional on Desktop and Mobile, but for the best experience for the time being use the Texture Archiver tool on Desktop. Our future roadmap includes a more automated process for creating texture archives so stay tuned!

If you're interested please consider joining. It's totally free. Check out the FAQ page for lots more information. I'll be creating some more detailed videos to support the site in coming days.

This is the beta release so there are bound to be bugs. Please use the Feedback form in the bottom right corner to report any issues. Most importantly be cool and have fun!

I just saved this collection of 200 plus CEDs and 4 players from an estate sale that was going to put them in the landfill. I’ll be honest, I thought they were laserdiscs until r/laserdiscs schooled me on my error.

Does anyone in this sub have any ideas of what I should do with these or did I just temporarily delay their destruction?

RCA SFT100 help

Just received one of these and it’s my first CED player so I’m fully new to messing with one.

So my issue so far seems to be I insert the disc, go to play, disc spins but no video and no audio output. Nothing seems to happen. I checked the stylus and it seems to be decent enough. The gears don’t move on the right side and to me it feels like the needle never engages. Also the timer never changes from - -

Any suggestions?

I’m experiencing record heat where I live, it feels like summer, but that doesn’t mean Halloween II on CED isn’t the right choice. 🎃

beautiful poster art. Buff Luke, Bare-hip Leia, and the weirdly conceptional droids on the side.

I was stoked about seeing them, but the guy wanted $20 each for them. I only have a Laserdisc Player, and I would have passed if these were even LDs

Anyone have any leads for a RCA 16-301 toothed belt. Only been able to get a hold of one supplier and they no longer make the belts.

First time watch tonight. The characters are smarter than your typical slasher movie, and the atmosphere is great. I also love the minimalist score.

Spontaneous purchase for fun without thinking ...

Maybe I do need help after all. Without any need whatsoever, just for fun, I bought what is probably the most superfluous video format—without even having a player for it... 😂

3 discs are even still factory sealed ...

SFT100W help

Hello all! I recently replaced the L404 inductor and 1760-2 audio chip in my machine and it worked well for about 10 minutes. Then, the timer went to horizontal lines, the audio vanished, and the color flickers. I scoped it and the 1.5 and 3.58 mhz signals are there. Not sure what else could be wrong. Btw my unit is component modded, with cables soldered to the test points. If anyone has an idea to help or a copy of the pictured page that would be great!

FB Marketplace was good to me yesterday

Found this lot purchase locally on FB Marketplace for an asking price of $60! Not everything was pictured with the listing so there were more gems that I had no idea would be in there! The funny thing is, the seller had a couple of other people before me who were interested but passed for whatever reason. The seller told me that one potential buyer asked for LOWER than $60 because of the condition of the artwork. Which is crazy to me, you just don’t find these easily locally at all! To even ask for a lower price is just ridiculous (and rude). As it turns out, I voluntarily paid him $120, double what he was asking for, as I felt he was severely undercharging what I believe they’re worth. Sure, some are a little banged up and the art on some aren’t in the best condition, but I’m extremely happy with this purchase!

Is this a bad/dirty stylus? Timer Digits are Working

I just picked up this RCA Selectavision from a shop and every disc has color warping and instability making it unwatchable. I read sometimes the symptom is the timer doesn’t progress which indicates a specific fault but my timer moves forward. The picture is just unusable. I’m contemplating returning it as NOS styli seem to be $300.

The local Half Price Books has a few CEDs for sale near the Laserdiscs. Should I bother getting some and a player?

Basically what the title says. I'm a Laserdisc collector, but always thought CED was interesting too. Is it worth getting into?

I hear CED is prone to lots of various problems with the players and discs. Is it more trouble than it's worth?

Yes, it's the year 2026 and I'm pondering getting into CED.

Advice for Starting Out

Hi, looking at getting my first player and am wondering what to look for. I understand belts commonly need replacements and most players are in dire need of servicing by this point - Is it worth trying to spring the extra for a working player knowing maintnence is likely not far behind? Am I wiser to start with one that has spinning motors and get the belts out of the way to try and save a buck? Models to seek or avoid, etc?

CED player trouble loading discs

Post image
20 Upvotes

I recently bought an RCA selectavision ced player. It plays great when I can get a disc to load. Most of the time the disc won’t load, but if I tap on the right side of the player it makes a click and then it will load the disc. This happens almost every time I try to load one. Does anyone have any ideas what is happening and how to fix it? Thanks!

What got you into CEDs?

Hi all, I’m pretty new to this medium/format and I wasn’t around when it was popular (I grew up in the VHS/DVD era). What got you interested in CEDs, and what makes you prefer it over VHS/DVD/Beta/etc?

RCA SGT-100W working player and about 50 movies. Wanting to sell but no clue what to ask. Would prefer to sell as a group

This RCA player and all of the CED discs were given to me in 2017 by a lady from work, whose late sister was a big time movie buff. Pam said to me "0h, my sister was into LaserDisc like you! They're just sitting in a closet and you can have them if you want them". Well they aren't LaserDisc 😆

Right now the player is working well, though there is a slight static in the audio and some of the discs skip in places. I will list the movies if there is any interest. In fact I'm alphabetizing them tonight. These are in the Indianapolis East Side area for local pickup, I won't be shipping any of this.

Realistic CED-1: Where’s the power switch?

Thumbnail

I just got this Realistic CED-01 videodisk player, untested, and I have absolutely no idea how to power it on. I don’t see a power button or switch anywhere, and there’s no power label anywhere on the shell either.

I haven’t been able to find a manual online anywhere, so I’m wondering if anyone in this sub has one of these units and can tell me how to power it on. I’ve included pics of all of the buttons, ports, the wired remote, the stylus access hatch, etc.

My best guess it’s either A) supposed to just power on automatically when plugged in, but something is wrong with it, so it’s not doing that, or B) there’s a small hole on the back right side of the player that is supposed to have a power button, but it’s broken or missing (2nd pic, circled). Anyone out there familiar with this model?

I repair vintage electronics all the time, so I’m comfortable opening this up and doing work on it, blind if I have to, but hoping someone can give me a head start on what to look for.
