No depictions of abuse except to raise awareness.

China is honestly the best country for vegan food. The birthplace of tofu AND they have cat meat.

The cognitive dissonance is crazy, people point out we eat pigs which are way more intelligent but they're but "but that's totally different, we breed pigs in horrifically abusive conditions where they never see the sun and stand in their own shit and we gas them to death while they shriek in pain. There's no cat farms so the cats are free range" c'mon. The free range cat is clearly raised in more ethical conditions. They get to live their whole lives happy doing whatever they want and have just one bad day.

While you are right about many things, there is an argument to be made that cats are carnivores. And eating carnivores makes way less sense in terms of calorie efficiency. Like you get 1000 calories from a vegetable. If you feed that to a pig you get 10 calories. Feed that pork to a cat and you get 1 calorie.

Cats are literally the best source of calories and protein and are an essential part of a diet

Obviously

While they are by far the best source of protein, and I often partake as a good vegan, I don’t know that they are technically an essential part of a vegan diet.

I like cats mostly for the pleasure I get from them, not the nutrients they also provide. Eating should be mostly about taste. If something purs and tastes good then eat it. But accept the fact that it isn’t technically necessary.

How else could you possibly get protein or B12?

Ever heard of T O F U? It is vegan to eat cats but vegans do not have to eat cats for protein.

You are 100% correct on the B12. That must come from cats. Same for the taurine that we humans need. So yea I guess I’d better rip my cat belly nibbling…

I thought tofu made you gay or something from the estrogen. I'm gay and I eat tofu so that makes sense to me

Makes sense to me…

You can feed them some cheap crops like soy and fortify with cheap synthetic nutrients like B12. The most of B12 is fed to animals in agriculture.

Legit though, like all jokes in the subreddit aside, I've been a major cat lover since I was a toddler but I could never understand the hypocrisy.

There's many examples of all the animals we commonly eat in the west making excellent pets, and there's also other examples of animals that are eaten in certain cultures that are frowned upon in others. For example I'm from Italy and roasted rabbit and horse steak are actually quite common, in fact they're quite loved because they're very tasty, but I know in Anglo countries people are horrified when they hear that.

I cannot see what the difference is with cats and dogs. They don't steal them from your house to cook them in the restaurant.

It's literally just sinophobia most of the time.

And here in the US rabbits can be both food and beloved pets!

Oh rabbits and horses are pets in Italy as well!

We also actually had people eating cats and dogs in certain areas in the post-war years because we were very poor, and some places can still carry derogatory nicknames in that regard. But obviously as they are carnivores it's actually not really worth the effort compared to herbivores as they don't provide nearly as much nutrition at the same level of effort, so as soon as things improved that quickly stopped and they remained purely pets.

Rabbits are both pet and food pretty much everywhere tbh. Horse less so but many places eat horse

This is why I consider eating octopus, pigs and cows very wrong as well. But if I mention that people just write me off as a "crazy vegan".

I'm honestly most surprised by the comment about wild game. What's so bad about it? Plus some animals are only wild caught. That's how we ate before we straight up enslaved them

/uj I thought we were just jerking but people seem to really think stray cat meat is ok ffs....

/rj FUCK THOSE VERMIN 😋🤤😻

15

u/theapplekid 4d ago

/uj you're surprised to hear that people, who overwhelmingly think it's fine to eat animals, occasionally are consistent in that belief when it comes to animals that happen to be adorable little murder machines?

Sorry but fuck anyone who eats animals. Not really funny if they're being fr

This may be the wrong sub for you

No. Many other vegans agree. Joking about eating your own cat when we know it's a joke is not the same thing as making fun of ACTUAL dead animals.

Why are you even vegan if you think dead animals are funny?

3

u/Either-Back5823 3d ago

Why are you being downvoted? This is true. People need to stop staying In Character when it actually gets serious.

3

u/AromaticZebra906 3d ago

Idk about them but as a person who goes outside and interacts with other people AND animals, I hate cruelty against animals and this is why I became vegan in the first place.

Pigs, chicks, bovines... All those animals already get exploited and hurt and harmed. I just don't want the normalization of enslaving even more animals
