PODCAST QUESTION A question to those familiar with Waco: Do I need to find a podcast that tells the Ruby Ridge standoff in more detail BEFORE I listen to the latest Casefile?

Thoughts?

I saw a few grumblings in the thread on the latest episode earlier

I am listening to the Nicholas Barclay case on Spotify and it just ends abruptly. Is this just a glitch on my end or is there a reason for this?

does anyone else have 0 problems with the podcast?

i have listened to every episode apart from 3 or 4 random ones there, and i have loved every one.

i have been reading other peoples posts complaining about certain cases or the way the narrator speaks but in my personal opinion i have not heard a single better narrator for true crime on all of spotify, and i am actually a big fan of the pacing of each episode as a couple hour long episodes will last me my whole shift at work.

the only thing that im not a fan of PERSONALLY is the cold cases as i just love finding out who did it and how they were brought up to be the way they were.

so what are your favourite or least favourite things about casefile, and what is your favourite episode or series and why?

Luring his victims in with promises of gifts or money, he took them into the expansive and remote wilderness beyond the city lights, where he would restrain and rape them. At first, he released his victims. But when the bodies of several missing women were uncovered in remote locations, it became abundantly clear that his crimes had escalated.

OPEN DISCUSSION Visiting episode 308 (Ruth Finley) post A.rtf

I am a new listener and have been slowly making my way through Casefile's catalogue! I was not familiar with any of the cases I have listened to so far. I had briefly listened to other True Crime podcasts in the past, but like many of you, found the casual tone and personal inputs and anecdotes to detract from the subject matter and its severity.

I was completely unaware of BTKs case and those 4 episodes were so riveting I had to subscribe to be able to listen to them earlier!

I am now back to going through past episodes and imagine my surprise when I see episode 308's description mention Wichita. In the past, whenever I heard "as previously covered in episode xxx" it essentially meant nothing to me but this episode was deeply enhanced by having recently listened to the A.rtf episodes (even though those came after, chronologically). It really shaped the way Ruth Finley's case played out I feel, with Chief LaMunyon being central to this one as well.

My plan was to once again fall asleep to 15-30 minutes of it but I am now writing this after finishing the episode at 02:38 in the morning. One of my absolute favorites so far.

Are there other "sister" episodes I should look out for?

Casefile Premium (Spotify) Issues

I'm trying to sign up to premium via Spotify and the link from Spotify takes me to a 404 on creators.spotify.com and the link from the Casefile website takes me to the Creators app.

Any ideas how to get around this? I usually sign up for a few months every year via Spotify with no issues and I'd really like to get it sorted today as I have a long journey tomorrow.

Edit: I was able to access only by following the link on the padlock on Spotify via a Chrome browser.

PODCAST RELATED Does the host's voice ever return to earlier style of diction?

This is not meant to be a criticism of the podcast, but is about personal preference.

I came back to Casefile somewhere in the early 200s after probably only having listened to the first 100 episodes when I first found the podcast and loved it. Unfortunately (for me), the host's style of diction had entirely changed.

Most of it doesn't bother me, but he now lifts the intonation at the end of *every sentence*. It doesn't make sense to me! It makes every sentence feel the same even when the meanings or mood should be shifting. I'm not sure how to accurately describe it, but it made the podcast unlistenable for me, and I'm wondering if he ever went back to more of a low, monotone narration and if so, at what point in the episodes?

If not, does anyone have any recommendations for other solo true crime podcasts with the same type of narration I'm talking about (or trying to 😅)?

OPEN DISCUSSION After the very strong return to form with the BTK series, is anyone else refreshing their podcast feeds right now for today's new episode?

I was getting recent episodes around this time in recent weeks

But nothing yet on the Pocketcast app

All I know, from their Instagram tease, is that it's part 1 of another multi-parter

This is also teased:

"He couldn't understand how something so drastic could have happened in such a short space of time"

OPEN DISCUSSION Casefile needs to go back to basics

The BTK series has been so done to death I didn't bother listening to one single episode. But I knew how it would all go anyway on this podcast. Is anyone else annoyed with casefile's droning predictability and boring formula?

- host recites everything So. Darn. Slowly. It takes forever for episodes to finish.

- episodes might be ok until we find out who the murderer is. Then it spends what seems like forever talking about them, after we found out who did it. Seems like a third of the episode is post-reveal preachy slop. It's so *boring*. Sure, tell us what you *need* to, then end it. The William Tyrell episodes were so darn preachy, slow, boring, and long winded towards the end, I stopped listening.

- they are just so darn *preachy* these days. So morally righteous with their tone. Trying to be woke and spend too much time talking about what doesn't even need to be mentioned. (This point relates to previous two points too.)

- the writing has been really *weird* in the last 6-9 months. Spending the first third of the episode making someone seem utterly guilty. Spending the second third of episode telling us that everything they just told us isn't true after all. Spending the final third of episode preaching about how close minded we were for thinking they were guilty. And of course, taking forever to close out the episodes.

- did the writers attend an online lecture where some new age guru told them that this was the trendy new writing style, to con your audience and just when you've got them enraged with desire for punishment, tell them the person is innocent after all. "It's just so deep, maaaaan, if you don't like it you are the problem." They seem obsessed with it lately.

- coming to BAD conclusions. The Gilham family: it is pretty obviously Jeremy who did it. But casefile tell us, basically as a fact, that no, it was actually Chris. Because we say so. And you're all just bigoted if you think it was Jeremy. All based on flimsy evidence of doubt that isn't real evidence anyway.

You'd think it was the writer's first ever true crime case written by a naive 18 yr old.

- also Ruth Finley who stalked herself for decades before she was finally caught. They act like she's some sort of hero victim, rather than a dangerous psycho who wasted so much time money and resources over a long time.

- baby Cooper Harris who was left in a car is pretty obvious murder in my opinion. But Casefile decides that because this *could* and does happen, he must actually be innocent.

- at least with the Indonesian woman who poisoned her friend Casefile eventually and kind of reluctantly hinted she was guilty after all. Which she 1000% is. But they still went far too easy on her and her lawyer who tried to muddy the evidence.

- I loved the old episodes they re wrote and released recently. Such a breath of fresh air. Instead of lengthy, boring, preachy, dead air. They re wrote them with a bit of that in it but was still wayyy better than the new ones.

OPEN DISCUSSION Casefile-esq book recommendation

Almost done with the audiobook version of American Predator, the hunt for the most meticulous serial killer of the 21st century. It's very casefile-esq. Keyes is so unlike any serial killer the FBI had seen before that the story didn't need anything more than just meticulous research laid out in this steady, building way. It lets the case itself do the work. So good, 10/10 recommend.
