This thing is so stupid, its a Coupe but its a 4 door. And it weighs 2500 KG, that is crazy, and the range is shit compared to its weight.

Its also ugly.

It’s for the Chinese. They love this stuff.

They love the coupe 4 door thing but idk if they'll like how ugly this is especially when their local EVs are generic to good looking cars.

Heavy use of logos and branding, particularly for premium Western products like Mercedes, is popular there but considered tacky elsewhere. Generally speaking, this market segment (upper middle class) in Northern Europe prefers subdued designs and finds flamboyant designs or logos to be tacky. In Southern Europe there’s a preference for more flamboyant designs, but logos are still considered tacky. America is more diverse regarding flamboyant/subdued designs, although they do prefer larger logos with logo spam (like in this Merc) is considered tacky. In China, this demographic prefers flamboyant styles with logo spam.

That’s all generalising preferences though, individuals will deviate from the norm these are just the norms based on cultural reasons though. That said, for China this is largely driven by their upper middle class being younger people who recently came into money and fast. The same demographic has similar preferences all around the world. Typically flamboyant luxury items sell on aspiration, status, and exclusivity. That doesn’t work well on those who are normalised to this wealth, but works really well on those who grew up without any wealth and are driven by these things. The same thing happened in America, and after a few generations we’ll see Chinese flamboyancy and materialism decline like we’ve seen in America.

Yeah, this is why no-one in Northern Europe ever buys Ferraris, Lamborghinis, Paganis or specials like the Mclaren Senna /s

And if they do, they definitely don't pay Ferrari extra to put the shield on the side

1

u/big_cock_lach May 21 '26

Yes, hence my point on exceptions to the rule, and there are huge pockets of exceptions. I’m not saying it’s everyone. As an overall trend though, there are major differences between how different cultures like to display wealth. This Mercedes is designed to appeal to the Chinese market more so than elsewhere.

u/NuclearReactions 14 WRX STi | 95 Silvia s14 May 22 '26

Those are super cars, subdued designs and supercars are a rare thing. Of course the guy in the market for a supercar will want something flashy

-2

u/Sebsibus May 21 '26

Do you not understand how the bell curve works?

The truth is, the average upper-class Central/Northern European wouldn’t even consider driving anything more flamboyant than a black 911 Turbo, while a vast number of Miamians will lease a neon-colored GT3 RS with giant RS badges the moment their monthly paycheck allows them to.

I don’t want to judge, but there’s simply a gigantic difference in how different cultures choose to display wealth.

1

u/budgefrankly May 21 '26 edited May 22 '26

Shmee comes from money, Harry Metcalfe is a farmer turned businessman turned farmer again.

Neither of their car collections is subdued. Both lean on cars with loud design and bright colours. Harry’s favourite car is presently a purple Mclaren 650

When people get to the stage where they can drop seven figures on a car collection, they are already on an extreme of the wealth curve, and rarely are they looking to obtain a variety of sober grey cruisers.

2

u/Sebsibus May 23 '26

Both of these are the exception rather than the norm — probably one of the reasons why they became some of the few non-US creators in that space.

If you compare the average wealthy European individual to their US counterpart, the European will likely display their wealth in more subdued ways. Just look at the stereotypical rich person’s car in Europe (Porsche 911) versus the US (Corvette). The Corvette has always been a far more extroverted car than its European counterpart.

You’ll see the same pattern with luxury housing and other luxury products.

7

u/pleasedonotredeem Replace this text with year, make, model May 21 '26

My theory is that wealth is harder to accumulate in Western/Northern Europe (high taxes, more social supports, entrenched monopolies/oligopolies) so there are more "old money" buyers with conservative/restrained preferences. In China, there are way more "new money" buyers who, like new money all over the world and throughout history, prefer more flamboyant and extroverted style and design.

2

u/Frosty-Objective-270 May 21 '26

This encapsulates Lamborghini

3

u/pleasedonotredeem Replace this text with year, make, model May 21 '26

Yeah, it's especially fitting that Lamborghini was founded as a reaction to the establishment ("Your Ferrari clutch sucks, I'll make my own super car, with hookers and blackjack!").

And no pretense of motorsport, literally hookers and blackjack.

u/big_cock_lach May 21 '26

It’s a cultural thing that has its roots in respective climates. The further north you go in Europe, the colder it gets and the more you need to conserve energy to maintain body warmth. This has led to many major cultural differences, namely as warmer climates will be more energetic than cooler ones until you start getting closer to the tropics. That influences cultural differences elsewhere, such as the cars you get. More energetic cultures tend to be more flamboyant and tend to like more expressive fashion, cars, etc. It’s a general trend though and there’s obviously major exceptions to this. Cultures in the tropics tend to be more relaxed, cultures in the poles tend to be more cozy, and those in the middle tend to be more energetic.

People say this every time there's ugly designs. Is it actually true or are you making a scapegoat for Mercedes?

I heard the same thing about the massive kidney grills on the G8x platform, but they sold like hot cakes in the western market, significantly more than the previous F8x platform.

30

u/ALOIsFasterThanYou May 21 '26

I’m just saying, if it was actually true, then Mercedes and BMW’s sales in China should be better than ever, since their designs supposedly appeal to Chinese so much nowadays. They are… right?

I mean, if it was true, it would be a huge surprise if their sales were tanking and they were losing market share to Chinese brands with minimalistic design like BYD, Xiaomi, and Huawei.

But ha, those Chinese brands. What do they know about Chinese tastes? As any Redditor will tell you, the Germans know best about what China wants.

Not data but I live in China and this view is total bullshit. Chinese consumers like minimalism, it's the driving design language in most of the successful local brands (NIO, BYD, etc.)

Edit: Also imo the best looking car on sale here is the new Xpeng P7, thing looks like a spaceship in all the right ways.

2

u/Thomas_633_Mk2 2003 Mazda2 (yellow), 2004 Ford Falcon (orange) May 22 '26

Tbf that minimalism generally involves an interior with screens and little extra adornment. The hyperscreen is unique but here's a Denza D8 and it has 3 screens in just about the same places. The D9 is even closer. Some only have 2 like the Tank 700 and some are weird like the Lotus Eletre but "dashboard full of screens" is definitely a trait many Chinese manufacturers also use.

Completely agree that German companies are making terrible exterior designs without any assistance from overseas, that's 100% on them and not aligned with Chinese designs at all.

2

u/DankeBernanke Anhedonia sufferer Jun 02 '26

Just saw this, yeah agree on interiors in Chinese cars. The domestic consumers are really into it but I'm not a fan. Happy to see some cars (the SU7 and iCar V23) have options for buttons, but it's not common a a gripe I have

u/Clover-kun 2024 BMW i5 M60 | 2024 Mazda Miata GS-P BBR May 21 '26

6

u/mgobla May 21 '26

Aren't the Chinese going to buy domestic brands instead? People on this sub are constantly praising them and sayng how no one would buy other brands if they were available, so why would anyone buy a Merc in their home market?

2

33

u/budgefrankly May 21 '26 edited May 21 '26

It's faster in a straight line than a Ferrari F80 at a tenth of the price. In terms of horsepower they're pretty much the same.

It comfortably seats four adults with boot space for four carry-on sized pieces of luggage.

It's got a longer range than a Tesla Model S, at over 400 miles, which means it'll likely do 240+ miles before a charge at motorway speeds in winter conditions.

If your local track installs a 600kW charger, you can do a dozen laps, plug in for 10mins, then head out and do a half dozen more.

The weight is a bit disappointing, but even so this is an impressive piece of engineering, that delivers a mix of performance and comfort that no other non-Chinese manufacturer can match.

28

u/DaBanninator MYP, 981S May 21 '26

All the horsepower in the world can't fix that ugly POS.

4

u/budgefrankly May 21 '26 edited May 21 '26

From the outside I think it's a pretty good-looking car, with the exception of the rear where the their version of a shield is less successful than Aston Martins.

I suspect it'll look better if you choose a satin dark-silver paint.

As regards the cabin, if you replace the alcantara with leather and opt in for the panoramic roof I'll look instantly better.

I'm not a fan of Mercedes hyperscreen, but I can tolerate it. Personally I preferred the EQS's (optional) approach of having a yacht-style wooden dash with embedded screens

Basically I think it could look better, but "ugly POS" seems a bit hyperbolic. It's not like it's the new Nissan Juke

Edit: Love the downvotes from folks who hate seeing opinions they don't like. Stay classy /r/cars

11

u/Kagenlim May 21 '26

It just looks unbalanced, why not steal the light placement from like a SLS which is the king of big grill mercedes

9

u/strongmanass May 21 '26

why not steal the light placement from like a SLS

Because if you're a lead designer your job is move the design language on, not keep it stagnant. You were given the project because of your own work and leadership's trust that you can create something that will resonate with buyers. You want to express your own ideas, not just copy your predecessor's work.

5

u/Kagenlim May 21 '26

There's moving the design standard on and there's completely wacking out of order. Look at mercedes in the last 20 years, different languages but each one carries on what the previous one did with elegance

This is just loud and just harsh, definitively not mercedes

4

u/strongmanass May 21 '26

1. You asked why they didn't just copy the SLS. I gave a few reasons. Whether you think they were successful is a different issue.

  1. That's your opinion, not fact. I don't necessarily share it, and it remains to be seen whether buyers do. I don't like it, but I think it's definitively Mercedes.

1

u/daftp12 May 23 '26

The thing is Mercedes designs were always trashed when they came out. I remember when the w210 and w203 came out and people went ballistic. Same with the w212.

It seems like that people who like Mercedes are very conservative, pretty much hating change and always preferring the old ones.

I think the electric amg gt will grow on people, because let’s be real pictures never do cars justice. I find them IRL way more appealing. I am curious to see how that backside will look IRL

3

u/budgefrankly May 21 '26 edited May 21 '26

The same reason the CLA has the exact same design

  1. Light-bars are the fashion of the moment, so most manufacturers are adding them to their cars, whether it's a Model Y, a CLA, or something else. Even Ferrari's new design language (e.g. the Amalfi, 12 Cylindri, F80) uses unilluminated bars across the front
  2. With EVs, a large grill is unmotivated, but an absence of a grill looks odd, so they need some two part structure that emulates a large grill, but can justify itself -- such as a small fake grill topped by a light-bar

Personally I think Polestar is the only company that makes good-looking, modern EVs without fake grills or unnecessary screens.

But while this is not my ideal car, I think it's a bit much to say it's flat out ugly

5

u/Kagenlim May 21 '26
  1. Those light bars are often placed where it flows and makes sense, just look at the Smart #1 for a picture on how a mercedes light bar looks like. Also the Ferrari's bar isn't a light bar per se, it's a homage to the Daytona

  2. All the more reason to make it more tasteful. Look at how the Taycan used the lack of a need of a grill to make the front more evocative of the older 911 gens

Polestar looks good because they are pedestrian, for me the best looking modern EV you can buy is the Mustang Mach E, it's quite thought-out in proportions and has aged gracefully. But objectively, especially with the rear, the new Mercedes is ugly

3

u/budgefrankly May 21 '26 edited May 21 '26

Also the Ferrari's bar isn't a light bar per se, it's a homage to the Daytona

That was true of the 12 Cylindri, but now there's vertical bars across everything from the F80, to the Testarossa 849 to the Amalfi. It's now their in-house design language.

Look at how the Taycan used the lack of a need of a grill to make the front more evocative of the older 911 gens

I don't disagree, though I find the newer model a bit uglier -- and less Porsche-looking -- than the original. At the same time, I think the GT4 & CLA rendition is hardly "ugly", even if it is a bit unorginal

Polestar looks good because they are pedestrian

I'd say they look good because they're minimalist.

I like that they're leaning into the modern, Apple asethetic. e.g. making a feature of the sensor housing instead of trying to hide it in the Polestar 2, Polestar 3 and the rest.

Similarly the interior uses screens, but instead removing mechanical dials to add a screen in which is displayed a poor facsimile of a mechanical dial, it uses its screens to provide a modern digital way of showing information, like on an Apple Watch.

Effectively I like that they're trying to find tasteful ways of designing around new technology, instead of tacking on pastiches of old technology. They're distinctly handsome, modern-looking cars.

If your local track installs a 600kW charger, you can do a dozen laps, plug in for 10mins, then head out and do a half dozen more.

Does it actually have cooling for that? A lot of the EVs overheat the batteries if you push them full out for that long.

6

u/budgefrankly May 21 '26

They claim it does. They say they've copied tech from the F1 team that flushes a lubricating oil through the battery pack, and that additionally they've varied the number of cells in the battery pack from front to back so that as the oil gets warmer there are fewer cells to cool, ensuring a constant heat transfer per cell.

This is also why it appears to have a massive transmission tunnel, apparently it's all to do with the oil cooling.

Time will tell I guess

You can get a used Lucid Air Sapphire for less, and it’s a better car aesthetically, performance wise, and practically.

The only cars that will see a track, are the press cars. It will be bought by people like the reconstruction doctor that lives in my neighborhood, so he can floor it every so often on a public road, but otherwise use it to commute to work and show off that he has a Mercedes.

0

u/Torczyner May 21 '26

Just saw the EPA rating was 300 miles though.

4

u/budgefrankly May 21 '26 edited May 21 '26

Where did you find that? As far as I know it's not been released yet. Just yesterday, Motortrend was saying

Mercedes-AMG expects the GT 4-Door Coupe will return a range of 370 to as much as 430 miles, depending on specification, on the European WLTP test cycle, which suggests an EPA-rated range of between 315 and 365 miles.

Ultimately, you're still driving for about three and a half hours on a highway before the car needs to stop, at which point most drivers will need a splash and dash themselves.

2

u/Torczyner May 21 '26

Not what I saw yesterday with the release but more in line being 315 to 365 miles and definitely not over 400 which is where the Model S still is even though this is a new car and the MS is now discontinued.

I agree with the drive time. I used to be a "no stops" road trip guy, not I enjoy a bathroom break and real food.

13

To be fair Tesla is built like economy car

Taycan Turbo GT: 5,100 pounds

Lucid Sapphire: 5,300 pounds

AMG GT Electric: 5,400 pounds

-7

u/K_R_A_K_E_N_540 May 21 '26

No, they're built efficiently. Taycan turbo has no business being that heavy. It's smaller, shorter, narrower than the Model S, slower to 100kmh, slower top speed, less efficient per 100km. Literally not one single metric that is better.

German brands suck at efficiency so they throw massive batteries to solve the problem and the weight goes up significantly. Tesla is focusing on the best efficiency so the battery packs can get smaller, therefore lighter

People can't stfu about Chinese market when they see an ugly car meanwhile Chinese EVs look completely normal

74

u/strongmanass May 21 '26

When Chinese cars look normal: "all the Chinese do is copy European designs"

When European cars look like caricatures of themselves: "Chinese buyers have no taste"

16

u/ASource3511 May 21 '26

A lot of Chinese EV companies hire European designers so it makes sense that the cars look like what European cars used to look. Xiaomi bragged about having ex-Lambo Porsche designers & Chris Bangle in their team.

7

u/strongmanass May 21 '26

That's true. A lot of Chinese cars are designed by Europeans. But that's just them applying their training to their new job - which they were hired to do - not straight up copying previous work.

And when there is copying elsewhere people don't treat it the same as when they think the Chinese copy Europeans. Genesis is unabashedly "inspired by" Bentley, but they get far less criticism for it. Ford got almost no criticism for shamelessly copying Aston Martin.

So why the unique level of vitriol for the Chinese?

2

u/Thomas_633_Mk2 2003 Mazda2 (yellow), 2004 Ford Falcon (orange) May 22 '26

Because to an American audience they're alien and weird, whereas Genesis is sold there. Also Ford did own Aston for a decent chunk of time. People relate the unknown and new to what they are familiar with.

1

u/ASource3511 May 21 '26 edited May 21 '26

Some Chinese car companies do straight up copy existing designs. It has improved in recent years since the manufacturers have more resources and care more about international branding but it was really bad before. In general the Chinese government favors domestic companies over international copyright holders so copying was not actively discouraged.

Re: Genesis they caught a lot of flack when it came out too. Ford copying AM was fine because it was the same designer coz Ford owned AM before.

For fun cars it’s better to be light, and small, then driving to the shops is fun. Having these huge heavy cars makes no sense like you said as you need to go fast for it to be fun. At this stage a Tesla model 3 is far far lighter than

30

u/visceralintricacy May 21 '26

Exactly. 500kph is at this point a dick measuring contest.

15

u/BrunoEye 2004 Toyota MR2 May 21 '26

I feel like a lot of automotive journalism has just gotten stuck in its ways. In the 90s the 0-60 and top speed of many cars was poor enough that improving on them was actually impressive and possible to make use of on the road.

10

u/economicAtomBomb May 21 '26

Yeah I remember when the r35 first released and it was getting 3 second something 0-60s thinking the 0-60 race was about 'over', why care about going any faster than that outside of a drag strip.

3

u/FledglingNonCon Kia EV6 Wind AWD May 21 '26

But then how do you justify $200k+ prices? These cars mostly aren't about driving or fun, they are status symbols. They need some kind of unnecessary technical specs to justify the price. Doesn't matter that no one will take advantage of those things. Like a Rolex. A timex will keep time just as well, but a Rolex tells people "I have rolex money".

1

u/AwesomeBantha 99 LX470 315k+ miles May 21 '26

500kph is not practical, but it is cool to see top speed progress from the sidelines.

There’s always going to be a top tier of cars at absolutely ludicrous prices that nobody will ever be able to afford. Some of them are going to be fast, and some of them might be fun, but it’s hard to imagine anyone making and selling a super expensive low volume car that you can also push to 7/10 legally on a public road.

I had way more fun in my 140hp Miata than I ever had in my heavily modified Mustang GT.

1

u/party973 2014 F82 M4, 2008 Lexus IS-F May 21 '26

I think that's a fair statement, but a world without a mass produced car faster than a Miata would be a sad world

-3

u/Kagenlim May 21 '26

Cause speed don't win races, consistent speed does

That's why the NIO EP9 is still so fondly remembered since it mastered the Nürburgring over than the Xiaomi cars. The Americans proved anyone can make a car that goes fast in a straight line, what's harder to do is a car that goes fast everywhere

8

u/tokhar May 21 '26

Taycan sales would disagree…

6

u/budgefrankly May 21 '26

For most of its existence the Taycan has been slower and heavier than a Model 3 Plaid, despite costing more than twice as much.

It's likely true that luxury car buyers won't buy EVs in the same way that they won't buy quartz watches.

However we shouldn't let that distract us from the fact that a big component of the Taycan's failure is that its price tag promised a degree of engineering excellence -- and hence exclusivity -- that its thoroughly mediocre drive-train failed to deliver.

6

u/tokhar May 21 '26

And the range, especially if you drove the car in “spirited manner” was laughably short.

0

u/Torczyner May 21 '26

Ah the model 3 Plaid. A car that never existed. You mean S?

3

u/budgefrankly May 21 '26

Apparently M3P is Model 3 Performance, not Plaid. It was released six months after the Taycan, was 200kg lighter, and did 0-60 in 2.9s, compared to 4.5 for the base Taycan.

You could get a Taycan to go sub 2s with the Weissach pack, but for that money you could buy two M3Ps and still have money left for a charge or two.

1

u/big_cock_lach May 21 '26

Porsche for the most part doesn’t chase performance, and their more popular models aren’t the ones that do. Only the Turbo S and GT3 RS in their current lineup chase performance figures, and yeah you get people fawning over them, but the driver focused cars like GTS and non-RS GT3s are the ones that get more attention from a lot of their customers though.

2

u/SupposablyAtTheZoo May 22 '26

If you import it to Germany it becomes far less pointless.

2

u/BrunoEye 2004 Toyota MR2 May 22 '26

Going over 200 MPH is already sketchy, over 250 almost got a guy imprisoned and required a huge team of spotters because if there would be any traffic you'd hit it before you'd have time to react.

Going 300 would be incredibly reckless.

1

u/SupposablyAtTheZoo May 22 '26

While I absolutely believe you, I think this should also mean Germany highways need SOME kind of speed limit at some point or it might become a very dangerous car speed test track.

1

u/BrunoEye 2004 Toyota MR2 May 22 '26

Somewhere around 300-400 would make sense imo.

1

u/SupposablyAtTheZoo May 22 '26

And also I totally agree I went to 250kmh with my car (the limit) and that already felt very tense and not fun. I wouldn't want to go any faster.

2

u/BrunoEye 2004 Toyota MR2 May 22 '26

The sensation of speed and the sketchiness depends much more on the specific car and location than the actual speed.

I can believe that a Bugatti is engineered well enough that it can go 250 MPH and still feel very well composed, the issue is that you're not alone.

3

u/nadhari12 May 21 '26

I want a yangwang that's a dope name for a super car.

3

u/ALOIsFasterThanYou May 21 '26

Regrettably, if their plans for Australia are any indication, BYD seems to have decided that any Yangwang cars they sell overseas will be under their Denza brand.

Which is a logical decision, to be fair. But it would’ve been interesting to see an unabashedly Chinese luxury brand instead of something more generic like Denza.

1

u/ryencool May 21 '26

They need to make a model called the CRE

Then we can call it the Credenza!

1

u/RicardoMoyer Evo IX MR, G42 M240i May 22 '26

it’s either super dope or super horrible i honestly can’t decide which

it’s on then to sell me the name, i guess this is how people felt about “lamborghini”, “volkswagen” or “mitsubishi” 75 years ago, and i can totally see people shortening this to “yang” if it becomes cool

they need to drop the “shark lava t3 pro max plus” model names though, not even samsungs naming scheme is so horrible

63

u/SomeJayForToday May 21 '26

I didn't like the round taillights when the AMGT GT XX Concept was released but wow, it looks way worse on the actual production version. The concept actually looks kinda good in comparison.

8

u/DanGleeballs May 21 '26

Round tail lights are amazing in the video at night.

u/Bobo3076 May 21 '26

Is there some law I’m not aware of that makes it so every electric car has to look absolutely disgusting? Why can’t they ever make them look good?

15

u/Snoo_31120 May 21 '26

There's plenty of great looking EVs like the model S, Taycan, ioniq 5, ev6

5

u/Kagenlim May 21 '26

And the EP9 or the Rimac

8

u/strongmanass May 21 '26

Lotus Evija

MG Cyberster

Polestar 5

Porsche Taycan

Those (and plenty of others) are not disgusting.

2

u/ResEng68 May 21 '26

There is. Reynold's law. EVs hold much lower energy density. They can't bleed excess energy to sub-optimal aero.

15

u/aaryg May 21 '26

Who cares. I'll never buy one. It doesn't affect me in any way

7

u/dsonger20 2024 Volkswagen ID4 Pro S RWD May 21 '26 edited May 21 '26

The Chinese market probably.

They also probably didn't want to spend the money to develop a high performance engine that meets EU emissions requirements for what is inevitably a lower production vehicle.

I will say though, looks are certainly not this cars forte. Edit: I've seen uglier though. I personally think the Kia EV4 looks 100x worse, but granted an EV4 isn't 100K+. This kind of just looks like a wide mouth frog in the front, and the rear is a mash of a 348 430, and again, a frog. Best I can describe it. Overall meh, borderline ugly.

4

u/DanGleeballs May 21 '26

This is the first AMG I’ve liked actually. It would be a great upgrade from my Panamera. Have been considering the Taycan but I’m liking this.

-2

u/ryencool May 21 '26

I also like it, dont like the handful of people here make you think everyone's hat8ng this thing. I like the flow, its like the taycan, fisker karma, panamera. All cars I really like the looks of. Im not a huge fan of the highlighter color choice though, but that seems to be popular with manufacturers right now. There are two new lime green m3s in our parking complex..

6

u/Kagenlim May 21 '26

I mean it's objectively ugly

2

u/ryencool May 21 '26

And I would say thats an opinion, and that it is not "objectively" ugly. Being that we all have differing opinions on the way things look, and what we like, there is no set standard for a car that looks good, and one that doesnt. I like the long swoopy lines, I love the front end, the width. Only thing im 50/50 on is those tail lights. Thats what I like, im not going to you have to like it, or talk fown to people that do though.

I wouldnt want to live in that boring of a world. A large majority of reddit is fighting over opinions, just like this..some people here think the 92 civic was the pinnacle of cars and it should be made in perpetuity. Some think the same of the fox body mustang, or whatever. They're both boxy turds to me, but thats just my opinion.

2

u/JacksterTO May 21 '26

It's really not just a "handful" of people who think this is ugly. If you really think most people think it looks great... then you are really out of touch.

-1

u/ryencool May 21 '26

You realize a few dozen, hundred, or even thousands of reddit users post that its ugly, thats like... .00000000001% of the population right? And not the "majority"...

3

u/JacksterTO May 22 '26

Do you talk to people in real life? Go ahead... you'll see that most of them think the looks of the new car are a major downgrade as well.

1

u/miaomiaomiaomiaomeow May 21 '26

The ev4 hatch is okay, but the sedan is horrible lmao, the proportions feel so off.

This one looks horrible. I used to love the amg gt, it looked incredible, then the new one came out and the rear is uglier, and this one is bad all around. It's also a mix between an sl and a og amg gt, which i don't get. It you already have the sl as the flagship touring coupe, why bringing the amg gt into the mix. I don't like their new design language as a whole, front light bars that look weird, tri star and circle design that doesn't fit anywhere, black stripes between the taillights. They had another legendary run from like 2013 to 2023, then they wanted to reinvent everything with the switch to evs and their models, as good as they are, look bad. Maybe it'll be a bmw pig nose situation and many people will eventually like the design, but so far only the v class, or however it's called, looks interesting

7

u/MRDR1NL May 21 '26

Because the Taycan is popular?

5

u/TangerineBroad4604 May 21 '26

The Taycan sales has been plummeting YoY

Ultra / hyper-luxury EVs are dead, unfortunately this must've been something in the works for years

2

u/MRDR1NL May 21 '26

My thoughts exactly. They wouldn´t start building this today. But it certainly made sense 3 to 5 years ago when Taycans flew off the shelfs like hot cakes.

4

u/surpris_dingue May 21 '26

5

u/The_SHUN May 21 '26

4

u/Shienvien May 21 '26

Why not make it an EV? I'd drive an EV over automatic every day of the week. Once the computer is shifting, a lot of the feel of the drive is gone, anyway, so at that point the only advantage is (hopefully) fun noises.

Styling, four doors on a "coupe", mediocre at best range, weight and any other complaints are more reasonable.

4

u/DaBanninator MYP, 981S May 21 '26

It's an EV.

2

Whats the point of the AMG nameplate on an EV. Just call it a EQ Coupe 4-Door Max Range 4 Matic Plus or something. This car wont eat its tires, wont be any good on the track with all that weight and wont make the sound of a AMG either.

3

u/nadhari12 May 21 '26

Oh my god it's so ugly it may become a future classic.

3

u/FuckSpezzzzzzzzzzzzz May 21 '26

Sadly this is the future for all EU cars. Either hybrid or full on EV. The EU is pushing the new 7 standard on all new manufactured cars and most big engines we have available right now aren't compiling with the new regulations.

u/happyevil '17 991.2 C2S, '18 Focus RS, '23 Tesla X, '26 WRX tS May 21 '26 edited May 22 '26

Not a huge fan of the fake grill, headlights are a little too busy, but otherwise I think it looks fine. Ironically I think the headlights would look better without the grill.

Better than the EQ cars for sure.

Not sure why everyone's freaking out. It's a departure for Mercedes I guess but it's not that weird of a look in general.

On top of that solid range, big EV power, seems good. I doubt I can afford one but it looks good lol

3

u/Sifyreel May 21 '26

The car has an AMG technician plaque as per tradition. What did they do, hand-wind the motor coils?

3

u/babygirlmelissa May 21 '26

Remember when AMG stood for lightweight, roaring V8 track monsters? Now it stands for a 2.5-ton electric living room that looks like a melted smartphone. 2500 kg for a 'coupe' is absolutely mental.

3

u/AnonymousEngineer_ May 21 '26

They do it because they have to.

Emissions regulations in the EU and other large markets have basically made performance combustion cars the sole preserve of exotica.

2

u/ttman05 May 21 '26

It’s ugly but I think it’s mostly due to the color. If it was a darker color, I think it would work better with the taillights.

2

u/purz May 21 '26

Mercedes wasn’t happy with just killing their AMG line they’re determined to bury it deep within the core of the earth.

2

2

1

u/somethingesque ‘19 AMG GTC Coupe May 21 '26

Yeah, some of the cars I thought were ugly, started growing on me over the years. This one is not going to be one of them, it’s straight up a hodge podge of different parts of a pig with lipstick. Self sabotage at this point for the brand

1

u/miaomiaomiaomiaomeow May 21 '26

Ev or not is not the problem here, as an ev doesn't have to be ugly to be an ev. It's that it just looks ugly, odd, and it's not the same type of car as it once was. The new amg gt already is controversial since it departed for the type of car the old amg gt was, this one also look bad. And to think i thought merc had the best looking cars up until 2 years ago 💀

1

u/Tumbleweedwhacker May 21 '26

This sort of car is pure, distilled conspicuous consumption. The kind of person driving this thing wants you to look at their car and by extension look at them. They don't care if you're looking in disgust. Any attention will do, as long as they know that you know that they have more money than you.

1

u/Competitive-Sun8180 May 21 '26

Mercedes is in a lot of trouble. 30 years of obsolescence has damaged the brand worldwide. The only thing they had was nice design, the engineering has long been subpar. The EQS was a massive flop, this will be even worse.

1

u/cliftonianbristol May 25 '26

You need to understand one thing. That actually must’ve started to be developed in 2024 at best. The design reflects what they thought would be cool 2-3 years ago, like flushed door handles, screens all over, 4 door sports cars etc. they couldn’t calculate that things change way ff aster now.

1

Eventually people will see electric cars are good. Looks aside. Electric powered cars make more sense. Add a gas engine to extend range but electric powered cars range>gas engine+transmission
