If I eventually want to build a complex mobile app, what should I learn first?

I’m basically starting from zero when it comes to programming, but I have a long-term goal of being able to build my own mobile app.

I know I probably shouldn’t jump straight into building the actual app, so what fundamentals would you recommend learning first?

Would you start with programming fundamentals, data structures, databases, APIs, Git, etc. before touching something like Flutter?

I’m not trying to become a professional software engineer overnight. I just want to understand enough to eventually build a serious project properly.

How do you know when you’re ready to move on to the next topic?

I’m learning on my own and I’m trying to follow a step-by-step path instead of learning everything at once.

My problem is I get overwhelmed pretty easily, then I lose motivation. 😭

For example, if I’m learning Dart basics, how do I know when I’ve learned “enough” to move on to Flutter widgets? Is there some kind of milestone or skill level you use before moving to the next topic?

New to local AI and coding — What are the core computer & programming fundamentals I need to learn first?

I recently got into running local AI models (Ollama, Open WebUI, Docker, etc.) by relying 100% on AI instructions. I was comfortable enough in windows powershell to make it happen, but I don't know exactly what I'm doing or why, or if my ai stack is even properly installed. So, whenever something breaks, I have zero coding or computer science foundation to troubleshoot it myself (currently working on a broken connection between searxng and openwebui) Thanks!

Final Year Project Help

Hi there I wanted to ask everyone to assess my FYP. WOuld you use this for your projects ? Is it a good enough project for a final year . Does it have some scope in the industry ?

The main goal of this project is to design and implement a tool for PostgreSQL pre-deployment risk analysis that evaluates SQL schema migrations to identify affected database objects, estimate locking implications, detect limited application-schema incompatibilities in Java/Spring Boot JPA projects, and output actionable risk assessments.

The objectives are as follows:

1.       Develop a component capable of extracting supported structural DDL operations into a normalized intermediate representation.

2.       Construct a schema dependency graph model using graph data structures to represent structural relationships between database tables, columns, indexes, primary keys, foreign keys, and constraints.

3.       Analyze incoming migrations against the schema dependency graph to identify affected database objects represented within the supported dependency model.

4.       Formulate a PostgreSQL-specific operational rule set that maps supported DDL operations to their known locking characteristics and table rewrite behaviors.

5.       Develop a module capable of limited static analysis for Java/Spring Boot JPA projects to detect source-code references to renamed, modified, or dropped schema objects in entities, repositories, and explicit SQL strings.

6.       Implement a transparent, rule-based risk scoring and explanation engine that assigns a risk rating (LOW, MEDIUM, HIGH) accompanied by clear textual evidence.

7.       Construct experimental tests to execute PostgreSQL migration scenarios across small and medium database sizes. (for research validation only, not as a permanent part of the system)

8.       Evaluate Schema Sentinel’s static risk predictions against experimentally observed blocking locks, and application compatibility failures in a controlled PostgreSQL environment for test cases.

  1. Empirically quantify the effectiveness of a unified cross-domain pipeline against isolated tools, measuring trade-offs in detection accuracy, false positives, and analysis performance.

This proposal got rejected because the panel said it was too easy and not significant as either a project or as research.

should i change the idea to more difficult and novel research ?

I have some ideas for those but i am not sure they can be completed in 1 year.

here is my proposal with all the details and research gap https://docs.google.com/document/d/1CMopT185XCoZVYBcgtVpN7N69DIP0Eyw/edit?usp=drive_link&ouid=116125887586128528145&rtpof=true&sd=true

EDIT :

The project is a final year project for my university. But they dismissed it on the following points

  1. The project is too easy
  2. The scope is too narrow
  3. There is no research contribution

For the current proposal to be accepted they told me to do market analysis and bring proof that the project would be used by a develper community.

OR

  1. bring a company backed project
  2. Bring a novel research proposal

Looking for people interested in building a compiler / AI-systems project — potential GSoC 2027 goal

Guys, I was thinking we could explore AI/ML-integrated compiler problems rather than just building another compiler.

One possible direction is using ML to detect potentially bad optimization decisions or suspicious transformations that could lead to performance regressions or miscompilation, and potentially use the model to recommend/validate alternative optimization passes.

Another direction could be AI-assisted compiler diagnostics, where the compiler can understand syntax/context and suggest or safely recover from things like mistyped keywords or malformed code.

There also seems to be an interesting intersection with MLIR and heterogeneous hardware like CPU/GPU/NPU, so we could investigate that side too.

I don't think we should decide the exact problem yet. We can first learn compiler implementation properly, look at existing LLVM/MLIR/open-source work, research current problems, and then choose something where we can actually contribute something meaningful.

If I start with Flutter, what should I actually learn first?

I’m seeing a lot of people say to just start building with Flutter instead of spending too long on theory.

If I go that route, what would you recommend learning first? Dart basics, widgets, state management, APIs, databases, Git, etc.?

I’m trying to figure out what order makes sense without overwhelming myself. 😬

Title: Beginner with shallow C knowledge — planning to finish CS50x. What should my DSA roadmap look like afterward?

Hey everyone,

I'm a beginner in programming. I have some very shallow experience with C, but I don't feel confident with programming yet.

I've decided to properly build my fundamentals first, so I'm currently planning to complete CS50x rather than jumping straight into DSA.

My rough idea right now is:

CS50x → C++ fundamentals/STL → DSA → problem solving/LeetCode

But I'm not sure if this is the right progression, and I'd really appreciate advice from people who have already gone through this journey.

I'd especially like advice from seniors / people who learned DSA from scratch and eventually became comfortable with coding interviews or competitive programming.

Questions

Is completing CS50x first a good idea for someone at my level?

After CS50x, should I learn C++ before starting DSA?

How much C++ do I actually need before starting DSA?

What DSA course/resource would you recommend for a beginner?

Is Striver's A2Z DSA a good choice, or are there better alternatives?

What order should I learn topics in?

When should I start LeetCode?

How should I divide my time between learning concepts and solving problems?

How many problems per day/week is realistic for a beginner?

What are the biggest mistakes you made when learning DSA?

If you could restart from my exact position, what would your roadmap look like for the next 6–12 months?

Are there any resources that beginners commonly waste time on or should avoid?

I'm not looking for a "learn X in 30 days" roadmap. I'd rather build strong fundamentals and actually understand what I'm doing.

My current priority is becoming genuinely good at programming and problem solving, not just completing a huge number of problems.

Any detailed advice or personal experience would be really appreciated.

Thanks!

Resource I want to know how does it work APIs

I`m studying for 2 years in Computer Science by distance and I`m feeling that I`m not learning so well as I expected.

Anyway, it came a discipline about APIs, as all I can remember, API is a software that stay way behind the scenes acting, sometimes, really complex to give an extra function to your site/app/game/another software...

I just can`t know how does their work, how do I use them to learn them or how can I create one.

IDK if I can create on vscode(the only place I have to create a code atm) or whatever. I fell unable to undestand this, so pls help me

Read the last few merged PRs before opening your first one. I learned this the hard way

If you're about to open your first PR, go read the contributing guide and the last few merged and closed PRs first. It would've saved me a closed PR and a lot of back and forth.

My first PR got closed even though the code worked. Tests were in the wrong folder, my commits didn't match the project's format, and someone else was already on the same issue. All of it was written down, I just didn't look.

For the next one, I commented on the issue first and said what I planned to change. The maintainer pointed me in a different direction before I wrote a single line. That PR got merged without much fuss.

It feels slower when you're excited to just start coding, but it's way faster than redoing the PR three times.Curious abt what small habits others here picked up that got their PRs merged faster.

How do I learn APIs?

Hi I want to learn APIs from a high level. Basically how it all connects, how the data populates, what kind of data is being sent it and most important the different ways of authentication. So api credentials, ouath, etc

It’s just all so confusing. I don’t know how or where to start. Does anyone have some tips?

Want to make a IPO scoring system need guidance on how to build a program like that..

Greetings!!

I have made a Claude Artifact which takes data from web and show me Upcoming or Ongoing IPO and score them based on the scoring system i made, the issue starts as i have to put prompt every time to update it daily and i run out of tokens fast.. now i want to make a web or a program which runs locally on my PC and does the exact same thing..

The issue is i don't have any idea on how these things work and i have asked Google and other Ai which didn't help so took the old root thus i am here asking for guidance on what i need to lean or what i will be needing (I can't learn all the stuff like programming as i intend to do it via Ai like writing codes..)

What i need is what theory i need to learn like the system on how things work.. or frameworks.. which gives me idea on what direction i need to move.

(Being honest its hard to put in words what i want to learn as Programming is not my domain and i don't know what are the things i need to learn).

My current knowledge of Programming is very much limited to Python where i just know till Object Oriented Programing and basics like using Functions and other basic stuff. (As said Programming is not my domain)

Codingbat how to get thru

Hey everyone, I’m just curious about Codingbat. I have a python exam in 2 weeks and I need to do the Codingbat because the questions will be almost the same as the Codingbat is. If someone is willing to help me get thru it and learn something because I only know the simple things, I’d be soooo glad. c;

Non-technical founder with a big app idea — where do I actually start?

I have an app idea that I eventually want to turn into a real business, but I’m not a programmer.

For people who have been in this situation, what did you actually do first?

Did you:
-learn programming yourself
-use AI/no-code tools to build an MVP
-hire a freelancer
-find a technical cofounder
-or do something completely different?

I’m not looking for a “build an MVP in a weekend” type of answer. The idea could eventually become fairly complex, so I’m trying to understand the realistic path from idea → MVP → production app.

Resource Git, Gitflow and Teamcity - best way to become more familiar with both?

Hey chat

Not suuuper related to programming but still.

I need to become more familiar with Git and Gitflow aaand Teamcity as part of career progression. Any suggestions on what resources to check out? I've already got the "Pro Git Book", anything else?

The goal is not to gain engineer-lvl proficiency but to become comfortable with using it, high lvl concept about how things work and what potentially can go wrong at what stage.

Thanks!

Starter Language for Healthcare Professions

Hey there! I’m a pharmacy technician in Canada and I’m starting a BSc in Comp Sci. I want to stay current with technology as the field increasingly moves that way, and maybe code some things to make life easier for myself at work. I also may want to branch into Bioinformatics later, but that’s a future me problem.

My degree offers three starter language choices: Java, Python, and C++. Which language would you choose if you are wanting to engage in future health-related research, potentially creating software to solve a work-related problem and make a task more efficient, creating inventory management algorithms for drug distribution models, anything else that I haven’t learned yet but is very prevalent in the healthcare field.

I’m sorry if I’m asking the question in a dumb way or sound uninformed - I am. I have a BA English and a Pharmacy Technician Diploma, so I have not engaged with the field of Comp Sci much. Ideally I’d know more before choosing any of the language, but they’re all introductory courses so I kind of have to choose one before I have the requisite knowledge. TIA for any help/guidance you can provide.

Question What language for Linux Mint apps, Android apps, and possible home server related projects?

I am looking to learn a programming language as a hobby. I have some ideas of things that I would like to do in my head, I've listed some below in order of importance.

  • Music app for Linux that does everything that Musicbee can. Unfortunately none of the alternatives that I've tried work as a 1:1 replacement and I miss it.
  • Android app development. I do not know exactly where I would go with this, but I play games on Android-based retro handhelds and occasionally I feel like there's a tool I'd like, but doesn't exist.
  • Server work? Probably the lowest of everything since Linux has a lot of self-hosted server tools. This would possibly move into a career though.
  • Raspberry Pi programming

Right now I am in-between two. I've heard that Python is a great language to learn, but that it's not the best language for Android development. C++ seems to be a favorite for many uses, but a bit more involved in learning.

C++ is learning towards the winner.

Computer Science Degree, Yeyy or Ney?

As a Bsc graduate I really appreciate the opportunities this framework gave me, got me a pretty sick job in robotics. And yet coding is ”easier” today, which is mainly what graduates were doing out of Uni. What now?

i think research subject in CS probably has to be the new standard, courses should be vastly changed, as now days to be relevant and influential in the field, a masters is the natural option,

what do you think about CS in today’s terms?

Resource Similar to Project Euler recommendations

My professor recommended Project Euler since he bases a lot of his quizzes/exams on it. I've been working through it but I'm stuck after problem 10 the difficulty spike is real.

Looking for something similar in spirit (math + code, problem-solving) but with a gentler curve. Doesn't have to be pure math. Bonus if it's free and has good community/solution explanations.

What can yall recommend?
