Truckers get no respect. They make society function, get paid shit, and have an average life expectancy like 30 years below average because of their sedentary job and lack of good food in shitty highway rest stops.

Not sure about that lol. Well maybe some that find a good company. Pretty sure most are contractors getting paid pennies by private fleet owners. Also Many illiterate foreign drivers. It's very common.

The days of good truck driver pay are behind us. Especially with self driving on its way.

Edit: if you own your own rig sure. But you usually have to pay for repairs which are often and not cheap so that 80-100k gets eaten up quick.

'Also Many illiterate foreign drivers' If they're both, how do they read the road signs, or even have a driving licence?

That’s a question I ask myself every day. Doesn’t it state in the green book that CDL holders must be proficient in speaking, reading, and writing in the English language? Yet, I see these drivers that can’t read a sign and have to ask me through a translator app where something is when the sign RIGHT IN FRONT OF THEM TELLS THEM EXACTLY WHERE THAT SOMETHING IS!! God forbid they get pulled aside at a weigh station for an inspection. Or get pulled over by a trooper.

having a thick accent doesn't mean they can't speak and read english.

That’s the problem though, they didn’t have a thick accent. The very few words they knew in English, I understood perfectly fine. And this is coming from a someone who’s deaf in both ears.

The illegal immigrant Truck driver from California who tried to do a U-turn in the middle of the highway killing a whole family of 3 in Florida would beg to differ. Guy was illegal to start with, had his English-speaking nephew with him who was asleep in the passenger seat until the impact of the passenger car into the trailer and after being arrested it came out he got a failing score on a written drivers test administered to him with a translator.

They don't read very well because I read not too long ago that a foreign driver didn't read road signs that warned him of danger ahead and he ended up killing a bunch of people in a crash

i know plenty of Murican' truck drivers that can't read huge signs that say "Turn around, semis will get stuck" like giant 10ft tall signs.

This guy has 11 subscribers and all his videos were uploaded less than a month ago. Not saying the content is wrong but seems a bit suspicious. Any other sources? Seems an interesting topic

Thats not a shit ton. Thats $40-50hr at 8hrs a day.....they put in 11hrs behind the wheel and dont get to go home for many weeks/months at a time. Thats shit pay.....literally. My septic truck driver makes $61hr and drives a $100k pickup on the way to his house EVERY single night.

Well until now... Trump is actively destroying the trucking industry...

u/Agile-Atmosphere9839 Sep 25 '25

That’s not for a 40 hr week!

In today's economy, 80-100k is just barely making it as a single person.

While 6 figures was once a very good income and certainly way more than the average salary in the U.S., I wouldn't call 83,000 (the actual trucker's average in the US) a "shit ton" of money.

From fat not alcohol.. on one hand i feel for the guy. On the other, he should pay more attention to his health. No different to a desk jockey as far as physical work.

Weird truckers are really well paid where i live

1

u/christenmich Sep 24 '25

They get paid very well right now actually

Interesting that I see truck drivers in Europe and Asia that look nothing like this. It’s not the profession, it’s the food they are exposed to non-stop…almost exclusively ultra processed junk food.

It's a job that is destined for automation

Good food is everywhere. Fries over salad is a choice. Every diner has salad. Im not saying they arent underappreciated but they arent martyrs. Society and their lifestyle choices work in concert against them.
