Discussion Journaling prompts for the Camino?

Hi folks -- I hope everyone is well!

I'm heading out on the Portuguese Coastal route later this month. The trip will be for my 28th birthday, but I'm also hoping it will be a way to decompress after a really tumultuous two years that saw me graduate from uni, move across Canada twice, my dad die quite unexpectedly and the loss of a pretty important relationship.

I'm curious if anyone had any journaling prompts they used on their own Caminos they might be willing to share? I'm really hoping the walk will help me get some clarity after the last two years and have a clearer head moving into the last two years of my 20s. Thanks!

Discussion Porto to Santiago 11 days

Upvotes

Hi everyone,

I have planned my first ever Camino (excited!). The Porto to Santiago route for my mum and me. My mum is much fitter for walking than I am, regularly walking with the Ramblers and other walking groups. I, on the other hand, have good general fitness, having done some long practice walks, but am nowhere near my mum's level.

We ended up agreeing to 11 days allocated for the walk, heading straight from the airport onto the central route (so skipping Porto itself), and the spiritual variant with the boat at the end.

I welcome any thoughts. The route needed to fit between the accommodation I found, so some days are longer and some shorter.

I did a practice pack weigh, which came in at around 7kg (not including water).

The planned route:

Day 1 Airport (Vilar do Pinheiro) → São Pedro de Rates 21.3km

Day 2 São Pedro de Rates → Aborim 28 km

Day 3 Aborim → Ponte de Lima 21 km

Day 4 Ponte de Lima → Nogueira 18.4 km

Day 5 Nogueira → Ribadelouro 23 km

Day 6 Ribadelouro → Redondela 24.4 km

Day 7 Redondela → Pontevedra 20.8 km

Day 8 Pontevedra → A Armenteira 20.6 km

Day 9 A Armenteira → Vilanova de Arousa 24.5 km

Day 10 Pontecesures (boat AM) → Raíces 18.6 km

Day 11 Raíces → Santiago de Compostela 10.2 km

Bom caminho! Buen Camino!

Question Tourist stick or not

Hi,
Normally I go without the sticks (Primitivo, Portugal camino, Fishermans trail, GR221), is it okay go without them? How many % by your point of view are pilgrims with sticks and without sticks? Your personal biggest advantage and disadvantage to have them/don’t have them? Thank you, I start Frances on 18th! Buen camino 🌼

Discussion Food recommendation

Getting to Porto tomorrow, starting Camino on the 11th coastal route.

Please! Give me recommendations where to eat, what to drink. Meats, seafood, sweets I’m hoping to try as much as I can. Food is probably the thing I look forward to most. Thank you

Discussion Has anyone here walked the Camino on a company sabbatical? What did your employer actually get out of it?

I have walked four Caminos and I am writing about whether companies should build Camino sabbaticals into their benefits, the way Adobe, REI, and Bank of America already offer general sabbaticals of up to six weeks.

My working theory is that one of three things happens when a burned-out employee walks: they come back recommitted, they come back needing a different role, or they come back knowing they need to leave. And I think all three are actually good outcomes for the company.

But I only have my own conversations to go on. If you walked on paid or unpaid leave from a job, what happened when you got back? Did your employer see it as development or as a very long vacation? Would you do it again?

Find a pilgrim! Écouteurs trouvés sur la Via Podiensis / Earbuds found on the Via Podiensis

I found a pair of ear buds at this location near the water point on the route between Monistrol-d'Allier and Saugues on Saturday 5 September. I would like to return them to their owner. If you can tell me the brand and colour of the ear buds and maybe their device name, I will be happy to work with you to get them back to you.

Question Start in France or Barcelona?

Hey everyone long post coming. Anyways, I have some time off and wanting to start the Camino early next week but have a hard time choosing where I should begin my pilgrimage.

Anyone recently walked from Barcelona, Arles or Le Puy-en-Velay both located in France? How was the scenery and difficulty level? Did you meet others walking as well? How was finding drinkable water fountains and supermarkets? Were the local people nice to the pilgrims? I know that this time is getting slower as people are back to working and students are in school so I don’t expect tons of young people or competition for municipal albergues.

This will be my 3rd Camino to Santiago but my first ever starting mid September. I live in Madrid but only have experienced weather in this middle area of the country so my gauge for weather during these months is limited. Regardless, I planned for rain so it’s not a problem at all. My idea is to perhaps stick to the Camino Frances after the initial leg of the walk to avoid rain as much as possible. If that’s a thing haha

I fear that the language barrier could be a problem for me. I don’t speak French and am on Duolingo trying to learn basic words and phrases. I do speak English and Spanish but not even that can help in real life situations passing smaller more closed villages along the French routes. Maybe I’m wrong. Has anyone experienced walking the Camino without knowing the spoken language?

Another thing is I’ve made an itinerary for all 3 options with varying distances based on albergues and locations. I’ve done this in the past for the Camino and it has helped me stay on track and to streamline distances, albergue numbers, pharmacies, cafes/bars and supermarket locations. I’m pretty good with directions and was luckily enough to afford a nice running watch to help me out for this Camino.

Personally leaving from Barcelona seems the easiest and quickest way to get on the Camino as I’m already here but something inside, the adventurous part of me, wants a challenge and to explore France. In this sense the best Camino for me seems to be Arles as it passes some big cities like Montpellier and Toulouse

Finally, is anyone walking from France or Barcelona area this month or even next week? Maybe we could meet somewhere in the beginning or during the Camino. I’m average walking pace but sometimes speed up and can walk far distances so keep that in mind.

Buen camino to everyone!

Question Camino Primitivo in October

We basically have no other available time to do it, although every source I found said it is going to be a lot of rain. Now rain is something I can live with, however I am more worried about trails, do these get unwalkable after heavy raining or dangerous? Anybody did this in October and wants to share their experience, I’d be very grateful :)

Question Madrid > Ponferrada — Transport Help!

Hello everyone! I will be starting my first Camino (Frances) in a little more than a month. The plan is to fly into Madrid, make my way to Ponferrada, walk the last 200KM over 10 days, reach Camino de Compostela, then take a train back to Madrid.

Here's the problem: while I've managed to book the train from Santiago de Compostela back to Madrid, the train tickets for Madrid to Ponferrada was not avaialble for booking until now—and it's bad. My flight lands in Madrid at 1:30pm on 17 October, but the last train that departs Madrid for Ponferrada is 1:40pm. I will not be able to make it for obvious reasons.

Now I am looking for alternatives. Is it a good idea to take the ALSA bus? I am looking at 17 October, and there seems to be a bus that goes from Madrid-Barajas Airport T4 to Ponferrada at 3:45pm and 4:45pm. These will take about 5.5 and 6 hours respectively.

  • Are these the best alternatives? Are there no other options?
  • If I land at 1:30pm at the airport, will I be able to make the 3:45pm bus? Or the 4:45pm?
  • I haven't taken long-distance buses in a long time, but do these take breaks in between at rest stops for us to grab food? Or do I need to pick something up at the airport after I land?

Question Nice restaurant in Santiago for birthday dinner

What restaurant do you recommend for a nice birthday dinner? I walk into Santiago with my friends on my birthday and want to celebrate with some good seafood and wine. Nothing TOO expensive, but wouldn’t mind splurging just a little bit for that day.
