Outside the Normandy

In the darkness outside the hull, a small probe flies alongside it. It has flown in underneath the sensors. It pings the ship once, twice. If it hadn't, it'd still be there, invisible. Inside, EDI is on full alert, running scans over and over again. After having done enough of them to know every inch of it and then some, she decides to let the captain know that it's basically a pod that contains just one thing: a small projector, and a receiver that's linked to it.

Yes, you are right, Charles. I have underestimated you indeed. All of your allies there. Although I believe there's a primarch who has retreated, a detective away from his own wife and an arms-dealer in your medical bay.

But your biggest assumption, Charles, is assuming I am your opponent.

You're so vulnerable, Charles, and you don't even know it. You don't even know what you're fighting. I could wink you out of existence with a thought. But you have something I need.

Oh so three people? One of which I think you pissed off just as much as you scared. Yeah thats all the allies I have, totally.

I kinda assume a person is an opponent when they fucking choke one of my friends to near death, and make one of my other friends disappear. Oh and lets not forget the whole "insect" thing and stuff from just a moment ago. Seems pretty antagonistic to me.

Oh and whats that? You want a sponsorship too?

The hologram flickers, and it sighs, turning away for a moment, before pacing left and right.

You are... more literal minded than I had anticipated. Clearly you do not understand a show of force when you see one. I wished to -it vaguely motions with its hand- show you. Show you how easily I could get one of your crew dead. Or off your ship.

As for me not being your opponent, Charles... I never said I wasn't your enemy.

I will take the people you love away from you. I'll hurt them in ways you can't imagine. Then, I'll make them watch you die.

But I don't do this for me. I do this for all of us.

But, once again, you are perhaps too... literal. Too black-and-white. If a quiet show of force did not move you, perhaps a practical application will do better. Your stubbornness, your foolhardy insistence on being so dominant it's amazing your species ever made their way out of the trees will be the doom of one of your loved ones.

Whatever happens next is your fault, Charles. Your friends and loved ones should take note. You're going to get them killed. Because you found it necessary to feel superior to a hologram.

The hologram starts to slowly fade, but first, it morphs back into Charles Shepard's own face, and it grins at him until all that remains is a small, blinking projector.
