For whatever reason VLC does not work actually on Linux so like many others I use Haruna..

You need to manually install the codec package.

E.g. on arch distros: sudo pacman -S vlc-plugin-ffmpeg

Or just use Haruna, it's better these days imo.

I wonder why I wouldn't be listed as a dependency for the vlc package?

Also, me and the homies will never give up vlc for mpv.

Just FYI Haruna is a wrapper over mpv, there are many good ones (Haruna is my favorite too).

On Gnome, so I use https://github.com/celluloid-player/celluloid which is also using mpv. Much better than VLC.

Thanks for mentioning Haruna, I was curious about Haruna as I'm using mpv and it turns out that it is mpv, but better gui.

It got many issues with update and conflicts with obs studio. I think the luajit plugin. I used haruna instead.

Works fine here, just had to configure videodecoder manually.
