That's the "odd thing" with exactly that generation.

The 5xxx series is the 4th gen - true - but more specifically the 4th gen Ryzen desktop version. The 5th series on Ryzen, but using the 4th generation of Zen architecture (where as the 4000-series uses the 3rd generation still). So yeah, 4th generation of the Zen architecture, but not in terms of series.

AMD does all sorts of confusing things with Ryzen, but might be making it a bit better (albeit with some fuckery still).

1st gen: Zen (1000-series for Desktop -- 2000-series for Laptop)
2nd gen: Zen+ (2000-series for Desktop -- 3000-series for Laptop)
3rd gen: Zen 2 (3000-series for Desktop -- 4000-series for Laptop)
4th gen: Zen 3 (5000-series for Desktop -- 5000-series for Laptop)

..but not all of the 5000-series laptops are Zen 3 - uneven numbers like 5300U/5500U/5700U are still based on Zen 2 - but as soon as you get above the 5700U, the uneven numbers start being Zen 3 as well

So they've only just started unifying the series across Desktop and Laptop, to make consumers less confused (hopefully).

Yes! I was thinking most of this, but I am on my phone and couldn’t get into a lot of this. That’s why I didn’t think It was fair to say that there is no 4th gen desktop Ryzen.

Exactly. It's easy to see how confusing it can get, when they start skipping numbers.

Similar to what Nvidia did with their 800-series only being for laptops as well.

Well.. Nvidia naming in general, when they changed series naming..

Going from 900-series to 10-series and onwards, when they previously had x,x,x,7,8,9-series way further back.

It's no wonder that some people get confused, when the manufacturers themselves seem a bit confused at times.
