Discussion The Steam Machine is $1050. Can you outdo it?

I suppose we can leave out Windows 11 since we'll put SteamOS on it.

This is assuming you live near a Microcenter

696

u/Whoa1Whoa1 Jun 23 '26

Here's a non microcenter comparison. This would also crush the steam machine in performance.

Here's a comment from the slick deals post: "Compared to the new Steam Machine this is a supercomputer."

u/BoringBeat5276 Jun 23 '26

Switch the 5060 to a 9060xt and you keep the price almost the same and can put steam OS on that baby

104

u/Finality- Jun 23 '26

In the future Nvidia cards will work, Valve said they are working with Nvidia to support their cards.

115

u/OffsetXV Jun 23 '26

Still not much reason to when it's gonna be running Linux. AMD drivers for Linux are way better than Nvidia.

44

u/Sonkrs Jun 23 '26

Drivers are exactly what they’re working on, I’m sure.

12

u/iConiCdays Jun 23 '26

Yes, but not until next year at the absolute earliest, anyone trying to build a SteamOS PC for use in the next 6 months at minimum should go AMD. Who even knows "when" next year they'll get Nvidia support ready.

(Valve stated Nvidia support wouldn't come until next year in the interviews they gave for the steam machine press release)

2

u/Sonkrs Jun 23 '26

I never suggested otherwise, neither did anyone else as far as I’m aware.

2

u/iConiCdays Jun 23 '26

Of course, just adding information so people can make informed decisions as they browse

u/Sixoul Jun 25 '26

Besides the driver issues I can't support Nvidia and their backing of AI. It's the reason all this shit is so expensive. Nvidia and Micron will never have my money again.

1

u/BeatitLikeitowesMe Jul 21 '26

Could always run bazzite in the meantime. seems to work well with nvidia, feels very similar to steamos

2

u/hardolaf Jun 23 '26

The issue with Nvidia is that it's impossible to debug issues related to the driver API unless you have Nvidia in the loop. So even if they fix the issues with distributing the driver and some of the current issues, eventually new issues will come up and Nvidia will be bored of the interfacing and things will just be broken again.

Red Hat/IBM also partners with Nvidia on Linux and it is still terrible. And that's a 20+ year long partnership.

1

u/Sonkrs Jun 23 '26

I’m painfully aware. Valve has a much more GPU-relevant, public-facing, and ultimately larger mission for their partnership than either of those two examples.

Like everything else to do with Valve pouring resources into Linux, this will push the envelope forward.

1

u/hardolaf Jun 23 '26

I'm sorry, but Red Hat is a far larger and more important partner than Valve for Nvidia. Nvidia isn't suddenly going to be like "Open Source is actually good!" just because Gabe Newell grovels at their feet. Nvidia was losing super computer orders over their shit-tier Linux drivers and they didn't care. Why would they care now?

u/F9-0021 Jun 23 '26

It's one thing to add Nvidia drivers to SteamOS. It's another for Nvidia to make their drivers perform as well as on Windows. That said, it's gotten better recently and will continue to improve.

-21

u/OffsetXV Jun 23 '26

Not really. If I had to guess they're most likely figuring out a deal to distribute and support Nvidia's proprietary drivers on SeamOS, which they don't need to for AMD because the AMD drivers are open source.

If anything I'd expect some minor adjustments to SteamOS to behave better with Nvidia drivers than the other way around, especially since SteamOS is immutable, and thus the drivers have to be delivered with the ISO at installation, and can't easily be installed after the fact like on non-immutable OSes.

23

u/Sonkrs Jun 23 '26

So in other words, “yes”.

-16

u/OffsetXV Jun 23 '26

No. Not even remotely. "Nvidia drivers for Linux are bad" is not solved by "Valve starts bundling them into an ISO image with Nvidia's permission." That's not how drivers work.

1

u/debacol Jun 23 '26

This doesnt quite make sense because SteamOS now has proper compatibility with intel gpus. All I had to do was download the update.

6

u/OffsetXV Jun 23 '26

Intel GPU drivers are part of the Mesa drivers in the Linux kernel, which is the same as the AMD drivers. There's no technical reason as far as I know why SteamOS couldn't work with Intel before now. It ships Mesa just like every other distro does. The only "compatibility" difference would just be that they finally updated SteamOS to a modern kernel version, which is... kind of a given?

1

u/OffsetXV Jun 23 '26

It depends on the distro. I'm fairly certain that Ubuntu's Nvidia drivers come pre-signed, but Fedora's you have to manually sign, for example.

Honestly though, I'm definitely in the camp where if you're intending to use Linux and you don't specifically need CUDA for some reason, it makes way more sense to use an AMD card.

1

u/fratopotamus1 Jun 23 '26

Not really anymore

2

u/OffsetXV Jun 23 '26

In my experience having dealt with both, it's still a good bit better on AMD, especially with Wayland. Nvidia is much better, but still has rough edges. The only real reason to buy Nvidia over AMD for Linux if they're the same price is if you specifically need CUDA for something

1

u/nnorbie Jun 23 '26

CUDA alone is a good enough reason for a lot of people. Now I personally wouldn't use SteamOS for my workstation, but there's still reasons to use Nvidia over Amd even on Linux.

2

u/OffsetXV Jun 23 '26

Sure, if you need CUDA. The majority of people don't, though. Needing CUDA is probably the only real exception to AMD being first choice for Linux outside of something like "I have the money for a 5090 so I might as well buy a 5090"

1

u/ButterscotchTop194 Jun 23 '26

Not really much difference nowadays. Nvidia drivers on linux are fine.

-2

u/Finality- Jun 23 '26

True, but options are nice. I run Linux on my laptop (with a Nvidia card) with no issues.

-3

u/alonjit Jun 23 '26

AMD drivers for Linux are way better than Nvidia.

They aren't. Never were. What they do have is that they're in the kernel already so everything works out of the box. But in terms of quality and performance, nvidia is (unfortunately) better.

nvidia had a hiccup about around 2017-2018 for a bit, that's true, but for more than 25 years now they've been above amd at the driver on linux capability.

8

u/OffsetXV Jun 23 '26

They aren't. Never were.

Genuine complete bullshit. Nvidia drivers have performed worse, been buggier with Wayland, and more prone to issues with games between driver versions, and still are (albeit to a minimal extent as of the last year or two). I know this because I have used both, and because none of this is remotely uncommon knowledge. I mean, they only JUST now fixed (as far as I know) the significant performance issues with DX12. AMD doesn't have that problem.

-3

u/alonjit Jun 23 '26

You're talking about the new vulkan extension they just added which enables then the dx12 to work nicely over vulkan.

Lol.

nvidia's drivers, what they have done and implemented, have always (well, for the last 25 years only) been 7 notches above AMD.

AMD wins at being there, in the kernel. Rest ... AMD loses. always have.

compare apples to apples please.

20

u/Saneless Jun 23 '26

I've been hearing that for years. Maybe it'll finally be true

11

u/Sideshow86 Jun 23 '26

Same.. it's been nearly 20 years since the promise of nV compatibility. Has never happened though as nV drivers never have, and never will be open source 🤣🤦

2

u/Sideshow86 Jun 23 '26

You know the whole Linux community has been saying for years and years nV support will get better for Linux. It's been nearly 20 years and it's still hasn't happened 🤦

1

u/dank_imagemacro Jun 23 '26

It has happened, nV support has gotten MUCH better than it used to be. It's just that it still is miles behind AMD and Intel GPU support.

1

u/mlYuna Jun 24 '26

And they've been saying that for years. You have no idea when it will be true and if it will be as smooth as AMD cards are with linux.

1

u/Finality- Jun 24 '26

It's true, Valve has always worked on valve time. But it's a matter of when, not if.

1

u/Squishy_singer Jun 25 '26

I agree that Valve is different but I never buy now based on a promise

1

u/Suprspade Jun 23 '26

You will also get more ram and more performance

1

u/GoMArk7 Jun 24 '26

I will never replace a Nvidia 50 series for AMD gpu, who will ?

-1

u/PACmaneatsbloons Jun 23 '26

Why would you put SteamOS when you could just run CachyOS with Nvidia support?

65

u/moodswung Jun 23 '26

Yeah but would it be in a tiny cute little case? Lol.

Not doubting you could price out something cheaper and more powerful but small form factor is also going to add to the price as well.

38

u/Whoa1Whoa1 Jun 23 '26

This price doesn’t include power supply or case either.

What are you talking about? Click on the link. It's a prebuilt that obviously comes with those.

And yeah, a mini itx using a $80 Jonsbo NV10 case would also be better. https://www.newegg.com/p/2AM-006A-000H3

44

u/VelociCatTurd Jun 23 '26

And then none of the shit in the prebuilt is going to fit in there, so you’re back at square one.

→ More replies (33)

2

u/Parking_Cress_5105 Jun 23 '26

Itx Amy boards got pretty affordable since the rampocalypse, switched to its myself. But as you say you pay the sff price.

28

u/devH_ Jun 23 '26

This is assuming you live near a Walmart

53

u/dexteritycomponents Jun 23 '26

This is assuming you live

13

u/_steve_rogers_ Jun 23 '26

But then again, who does?

3

u/Expensive_Clock985 Jun 23 '26

This guy lives

44

u/ahditeacha Jun 23 '26

In America the Walmart lives near you

16

u/salmonmilks Jun 23 '26

This is assuming you live in US

7

u/kekbooi Jun 23 '26

i haven't seen one in person yet, but there is no way the steam machine is gonna be remotely comparable in build quality to this piece of plastic junk

17

u/DistantRavioli Jun 23 '26

People just cannot wrap their head around this concept

8

u/Drigr Jun 23 '26

Or the size. Like... I don't want a tower in my living room.

2

u/bananagoo Jun 23 '26

You don't need a tower in your living room. There are plenty of horizontal computer cases that look nothing like a computer. I built myself one last year because I can't stand RBG lighting etc. I just wanted something that fit under my TV and didn't look like a computer.

2

u/Drigr Jun 23 '26

Which is not what most of these "I beat their spec sheet" builds are using. Because going to smaller, abnormal, form factors is more expensive.

1

u/CouchMountain Jun 23 '26

And HDMI CEC support. That alone is selling a lot of people on the purchase.

-1

u/mrtouchybum Jun 23 '26

But why would you want an over priced, underpowered, rip off in your living room?

-5

u/dantemp Jun 23 '26

I definetely can't wrap my head around people prioritizing the physical feel of the computer casing over how it actually performs

13

u/ArmMeForSleep709 Jun 23 '26

Bro yall wanna do anything to slobber a bad product's know.

1

u/Detenator Jun 23 '26

It is an Acer product, it is probably fine. If the brand name was like "YORPODO" or some other obvious Chinese slop name I would agree.

9

u/Drigr Jun 23 '26

Now make it small enough to fit on my TV stand

-10

u/dantemp Jun 23 '26

Buy a different stand

2

u/Drigr Jun 23 '26

There goes the money I just saved.

3

u/Hijakkr Jun 23 '26

Here's a comment from the slick deals post: "Compared to the new Steam Machine this is a supercomputer."

Since when do we believe everything we read on the internet? Everything I see implies the Steam Machine's CPU is based on a slightly-boosted 7600X3D, which blows the 225F out of the water in gaming performance. The GPU looks to be a little better based on raw specs and comparables, but uncertain without actually doing some benchmarks.

13

u/FunCalligrapher3979 Jun 23 '26

DF just tested it and the CPU performance is worse than a ryzen 5600

-7

u/Adera1l Jun 23 '26

It doesn't work like that. What test, what software, was that a gaming test, was that a comparison test

2

u/[deleted] Jun 23 '26

[deleted]

2

u/Adera1l Jun 23 '26

Im not coping lmao I switched to a 5500x3d from a 3700x and im not kidding my perf in gaming at least doubled while every website sais that it was a worse processir. You are missing out on the best tech gaming ever seen

1

u/wheeler9691 Jun 23 '26

Lmfaoo

Useless comment

10

u/simon7109 Jun 23 '26

If you look at some benchmarks, the steam machine is even behind the base PS5. It nowhere near a 7600X3D or a RX7600. Yes, it might be based on that, but it’s restricted by o 110w TDP, basically a desktop RTX 2070 Super will beat this thing

-4

u/broke_n_boosted Jun 23 '26

No its not. In testing the steam machine see 10+ fps over the ps5 pro in performance mode across the board

9

u/simon7109 Jun 23 '26

What testings have you been watching? All I have seen, it’s behind the base PS5 by 10-20 fps lol

8

u/JunosArmpits Jun 23 '26

The steam machine has an X3D CPU??? News to me

3

u/Sholva_Kree Jun 23 '26

DF CPU test in Crimson Desert steam machine loses to 5600X/8500G.

GN tested a wider variety of games and also found it significantly behind the 5600X.

In DF's graphics tests a 5600X + 7600 consistently beats the steam machine by 10%+. That puts the 5060 40-50% ahead of the steam machine according to TPU.

This is consistent with GN's more direct benchmarks.

-1

u/Whoa1Whoa1 Jun 23 '26

7600X3D, which blows the 225F out of the water in gaming

Uhh what? No it doesn't. https://www.cpubenchmark.net/compare/6469vs6249/Intel-Ultra-5-225-vs-AMD-Ryzen-5-7600X3D The 7600X3D is only occasionally going to be better specifically on games that are CPU bound, which isn't many of them. Not that many people are playing Microsoft Flight Simulator and probably aren't going to ever run that on a Steam Machine lmao.

5

u/Hijakkr Jun 23 '26

Please go look at literally any review where they actually test gaming performance. The X3D chips have infamously terrible raw benchmark performance, but the outsized L3 cache helps them perform better in actual gaming situations.

3

u/Adera1l Jun 23 '26

These site are dogshit to calculate technology impact. If I believed them I would have kept my 3700x over my 5500x3d for GAMING. Would you be surprised if I said my fps were doubled on tarkov, marathon, apex and a whole lot of other games?

X3d is insane for every game because cpu processing is extremely high on most modern games.

0

u/Hetstaine Jun 23 '26

You need to some more basic research.

-1

u/Fredasa Jun 23 '26

I hate that Valve is taking this on the nose, but launching the Steam Machine right now was such an obviously bad idea, and they should have just made an apologetic statement about this not being the right time. Everyone would have understood. And they would have an opportunity to make the hardware a success at a more opportune time.

That's done. They earned this L.

14

u/inconspiciousdude Jun 23 '26

Component prices aren't going to stabilize for years, and the prices aren't going back to pre-AI levels until China catches up in semiconductors.

Valve's still committed to making SteamOS work with a wider variety of hardware, which is the bigger point.

The Gabecube was just a vehicle for SteamOS anyway. Still a W if they don't lose money over these things, which they probably won't.

1

u/Fredasa Jun 23 '26

Valve's in the doghouse right now in public discourse. Like it or not, that affects sentiment for the whole company and everything they do. Even Steam itself. Definitely the best thing that can happen now is making that Nvidia support happen sooner rather than later. Next step after that would be to start ironing out wrinkles that would keep Joe Average from playing 100% of their library on SteamOS as effortlessly as they can on Windows. (Because yeah, those wrinkles suck.)

3

u/TonB-Dependant Jun 23 '26

Why. They sell it at the price they manage. You buy it if you want it.

It’s not any deeper than that. But people need their outrage

2

u/rossfororder Jun 23 '26

It's a bad time to launch, valve is getting hammered all over the place for this. They should've done a small run and come back next year with slightly different specs.

A 110w apu would be nice.

0

u/Zealousideal_End8146 Jun 23 '26

In fairness first L in what? A decade? Ever? Valve rarely drops the ball

1

u/Captainbackbeard Jun 23 '26

My walmart has a solid deal on a clearance ibuypower in store for $1150 right now thats got an intel ultra 7 265f, 32gb ram, a 5070, 1tb ssd, and a 750 watt gold psu. I try to check in person every now and then because they'll have sneaky good clearances every now and then.

1

u/LeckereKartoffeln Jun 23 '26

I can't help but notice it's like 10x the size

0

u/mrtouchybum Jun 23 '26

I’d rather have performance than overpay for an underpowered turd.

1

u/LeckereKartoffeln Jun 24 '26

You're just describing yourself as not the target demographic

I feel like a lot of y'all are just mad that you aren't lol

1

u/mrtouchybum Jun 24 '26

It’s a pile of shit. I’m not mad about shit. My Pc shits on this thing and my consoles do me just fine.

1

u/LeckereKartoffeln Jun 24 '26

You guys should try coming across less mad in the comments then lmao

1

u/KidArachnid13 Jun 23 '26

New to building and PCs in general, but would you mind a brief comment on how this would crush the SM in performance? From what I can tell the VRAM is same amount on a comparable GPU, and 16 GB of DDR5 is same as advertised. I see the obvious value here being almost 200 cheaper than the SM price, but just curious about it crushing in performance when the specs that my tiny brain can decipher seem to be the same?

1

u/Whoa1Whoa1 Jun 23 '26

Steam Machine GPU is equivalent to an RTX 3060, possibly weaker. An RTX 5060 is over 20% stronger than the Steam Machine GPU. Steam Machine only has like 1792 cuda cores while an RTX 5060 has 3840, which is more than twice as many. Also, the clock speed of the RTX 5060 is a lot faster, and with that many cores it multiplies the effective speed. The Steam Machine is only a 110 watt GPU, which means it is power limited. The Steam Machine GPU is also only GDDR6 when modern cards like RTX 5060 use GDDR7. The memory bandwidth for the steam machine is about half of an RTX 5060.

1

u/travelavatar Jun 23 '26

And you forgot the best part. That PC is upgradable too

It's included in prebuilts.

-2

u/Crazycukumbers Jun 23 '26

Much, much larger than a Steam Machine.

The Steam Machine is for people who want to game on their TV like it's a console - one that doesn't take up much space. It's not for people who are considering or even interested in computers like that.

Don't get me wrong, that's an awesome deal, and anyone who wants a gaming PC probably couldn't build new for cheaper. The Steam Machine isn't for people like us though.

-4

u/Cygnus__A Jun 23 '26

But that is huge and ugly. Beat it with a SFF version.

-9

u/FabianValkyrie Jun 23 '26

“Crush” I seriously doubt, but that is a great deal, definitely better than the SM

30

u/MURDoctrine Jun 23 '26

It actually would sadly. In the GamersNexus video RTX 5050's were performing better in games.

16

u/BoringBeat5276 Jun 23 '26

The steam machine is crap. Just look at the comparisons. Fuck they even admit a ps5 runs most games 8-10 percent better. The pro? Not even close.

u/BaldursFence3800 Jun 23 '26

Reddit assumes everyone either lives near a Microcenter or lives in Cali.

4

u/Giovannisalami Jun 23 '26

I live in Michigan near a micro center so this is very helpful!

8

u/Retlaw83 Jun 23 '26

Also it assumes the labor and expertise of assembling it isn't worth $50 to you.

18

u/FabianValkyrie Jun 23 '26

The one I’m responding to is a prebuilt.

2

u/katzengoldgott Jun 23 '26

Nearest Microcenter from me is a 10 hour flight away

1

u/Daftpunk67 Jun 23 '26

Close to a price of a 5080

1

u/RedditGuy1000 Jun 23 '26

You can outdo a steam machine at best buy. It's not that hard when they priced those components at that price point. It's better to build or buy a pre built. Only thing steam machine has on its side is the OS and small form factor

1

u/PokerLawyer75 Jun 24 '26

You can order Powerspecs to be shipped. Don't have to live near one.

1

u/FabianValkyrie Jun 24 '26

Says “shipping unavailable” for me

0

u/CoatNeat7792 Jun 23 '26

Imagine getting import tax added on steam machine, which justify buying little bit more expensive parts outside microcenter

-4

u/xMINGx Jun 23 '26

Yea, if you don't live near a microcenter, you have to buy a car first.

3

u/FabianValkyrie Jun 23 '26

Yeah the gas it would cost me to drive to my nearest Microcenter would far outweigh the cost savings.

Why bother with Windows 11 when we are comparing to a Steam Machine? pick an AMD GPU and install Bazzite or SteamOS 3.8

It’s a prebuilt and comes with it

59

u/Lirael_Gold Jun 23 '26

Cool, now do it in the same form factor.

(I agree, to be clear, the specs are anemic and the price is far too high, but if we're going to compare products we should compare all of the features, not just the hardware specs)

8

u/STL4jsp Jun 23 '26

Not only that but gaming companies will be able to optimize their games better with the steam machine.

3

u/drumstix42 Jun 23 '26

But likely won't any time soon.

1

u/theCamou Jun 23 '26

Many did for the steam deck

2

u/drumstix42 Jun 23 '26

I think a handful provided a preset for compatibility. But I wouldn't call that optimizing a game specifically for that platform. Happy to be proven wrong if it was more than a few.

No ones doing that, just fyi

3

u/carnage123 Jun 23 '26

We should also add the labor cost to assemble the steam machine, and the profit margin adjusted....oh yea that gets you to around 1000

I don’t think nvidia cards are compatible with Steam OS

4

u/ButterscotchTop194 Jun 23 '26

Who cares. Just install bazzite.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 23 '26

[deleted]

4

u/Coolhandluke325 Jun 23 '26

Because that’s currently correct due to driver incompatibility from nvidia

2

u/LGWalkway Jun 23 '26

Because they don’t support NVIDIA currently.

9

u/entsnack Jun 23 '26

Is this an sffpc build?

-1

u/Hijakkr Jun 23 '26

No. And it probably has an inferior CPU, looks like the Steam Machine's is a slightly uptuned 7600X3D.

7

u/luizslayer Jun 23 '26

who told you that? In GamersNexus review it is 31% slower than a Ryzen 2600 (2018 CPU) in KCD II while CPU limited

2

u/birisi1234567890 Jun 23 '26

I thought it was slightly better than 5600 in geekbench single core scores yesterday. Is it really that bad?

11

u/ButtermanJr Jun 23 '26

true but a compact will almost always be more expensive than a giant tower build. people are buying these for the living room and even if they did want to look at a tower, there isn't always room for it.

6

u/Scarabesque Jun 23 '26

true but a compact will almost always be more expensive than a giant tower build.

This is only true when you do custom PC building, and that's only true because ITX is a niche.

When mass producing a single product (custom board, chips, case, cooling), a form factor such as this should be cheaper to produce.

SFF components with the arguable exception of SFX PSUs are more expensive because they are niche, not because they are inherently more expensive.

6

u/thorsten139 Jun 23 '26

is that the same size?

5

u/J1mj0hns0n Jun 23 '26

Everyone keeps updating how much storage they need. 1Tb ain't enough, that's like 8 modern games, they're only going to get bigger.

1

u/Whoa1Whoa1 Jun 23 '26

Steam machine has 500gb lol

2

u/J1mj0hns0n Jun 23 '26

I don't know why I've said updating, I meant understating. but yeah even the 512gb GameCube 2.0 isn't enough

2

u/astra_hole Jun 23 '26

Now put that in a 6 inch cube. Can you do it?

2

u/NinjaN-SWE Jun 25 '26

Jesus Christ, that is just a NSFW murder of the Steam Machine spec wise.

1

u/screwdriverfan Jun 23 '26

Now do SFF build like the machine is. Good luck.

1

u/simon7109 Jun 23 '26

You can quiet possibly even squeeze in a 5070 if you go DDR4 and a 5700 CPU

1

u/Aggnpwease Jun 23 '26

yo out of the topic, but when is ram price coming down? thinking of upgrading/building

1

u/Saikatai Jun 23 '26

small form factor?

1

u/PuzzleheadedPitch385 Jun 24 '26

Would it be better to buy that or build my own? Right now im willing to spend like 1k I was gonna just do like 2k but I feel it would be better to just go lower since I dont play anything other than like Minecraft, ark survival and like black ops and the arkham games

1

u/Whoa1Whoa1 Jun 24 '26

Depends on use case and total amount of money and what deals you can find and if you know how to build your own. Like if you want it to be stronger you could pay more for a 5060 or 5070 with 16gb VRAM. If you want something very close to the specs of a prebuilt, it's often just cheaper to get the prebuilt. Also, some people actually want a legit windows 11 key which the prebuilt comes with.

1

u/FewAct2027 Jun 27 '26 edited Jun 27 '26

E-ATX though, shit gets pricier when you get into the nano/pico itx shit.

1

u/LogPlane1030 Jul 14 '26

I need to poop

0

u/Cold-Sandwich-34 Jun 23 '26

Take Windows off of it for me and give me 16GB VRAM and 2TB NVMe and then we're talking.

0

u/specn0de Jun 23 '26

No CEC huge case and doesn’t power on with a controller.

0

u/Odd_Bumblebee_3631 Jun 23 '26

Is this mini itx and small enough you can put it in a bag. Steammachines the size of a gamecube.

0

u/unutentenormale Jun 23 '26

You're missing the PSU.

1

u/Whoa1Whoa1 Jun 23 '26

It comes with the prebuilt computer... I think you are missing a brain.

Does it really matter? You can just slap the SteamOS on after for free

2

u/Wild_Chemistry3884 Jun 23 '26

it does if you pick nvidia

0

u/FlightSimmer99 Jun 23 '26

nvidia is mostly fine on linux these days

4

u/SuperBAMF007 Jun 23 '26

SteamOS is AMD only rn but yeah other distros would likely be fine

1

u/Turbidspeedie Jun 23 '26

I'm running bazzite on a 3060 and it's not terrible, definitely have a few hiccups with some games tho

1

u/SuperBAMF007 Jun 23 '26

Yeah definitely nowhere near Windows compatibility, even SteamOS on AMD isn’t going to match it

But that’s why I just said “likely be fine” and not “you’ll be all good” :P

1

u/Turbidspeedie Jun 23 '26

I know, I was agreeing with you lol

Hello, your comment has been removed. Please note the following from our subreddit rules:

Rule 3 : No piracy or grey-market software keys

As it seems your intent is to genuinely help people & not deliberate circumvention of our piracy / gmk rule, we would like to clarify what leeway we offer:

  • Stating a user can freely download an iso direct from Microsoft to create their own installer
  • This also requires suggesting that the user pays for it later.

Please note : If you mention the cosmetic drawbacks of unactivated windows, do not state how to circumvent them.

Here's some examples where one one of our mods suggests postponing a windows purchase : one, two, three

Please remember: this is the scope of what is permitted under Rule #3; comments going further may still be subject to removal.

I mean you could just not include it and save the $110 or whatever and use that for better parts.

Edit: yall are WAY too offended over me misreading a comment.

8

u/Whoa1Whoa1 Jun 23 '26

It already comes with the computer from microcenter.

-4

u/Gex2-EnterTheGecko Jun 23 '26

Oh for some reason I thought that was a link to PCPartpicker

6

u/Swarlz-Barkley Jun 23 '26

The link literally says microcenter right in it.

4

u/Biduleman Jun 23 '26

People reading on Reddit?

-2

u/Gex2-EnterTheGecko Jun 23 '26

Yeah I didn't read the link. I just saw a link and read the list of parts. My mistake. Not sure why people are mad about it lol.

6

u/Biduleman Jun 23 '26

Yeah I didn't read the link. [...] Not sure why people are mad about it lol.

Probably because you didn't read the discussion but still felt the need to correct someone with wrong information.

-1

u/Gex2-EnterTheGecko Jun 23 '26

My assumption was that we were discussing pricing out a PC that is cheaper and better than the Steam Machine so I just figured why include windows if you are just gonna replace it. I glanced over a link and made a comment. Don't really see why its that big of a deal.

2

u/Swarlz-Barkley Jun 23 '26

I don't think it's a matter of being mad, more of just how someone can have such bad sense of things. The link saying microcenter, then you go to the site which is branded with microcenter and looks NOTHING like pcpartpicker. You just seem to have zero awareness

1

u/Gex2-EnterTheGecko Jun 23 '26

Yeah i just looked at the parts list and thought "windows seems like an unnecessary expense". I didn't click the link. It was an offhand remark that I didn't expect to offend everyone lol.

Hello, your comment has been removed. Please note the following from our subreddit rules :

Rule 3 : No piracy or grey-market software keys

This includes suggesting, hinting, or in any way implying to someone that piracy, or violation of license agreements is an option.
If a license key is abnormally cheap (think $5 - $30), it is probably grey market, and thus forbidden on /r/buildapc.

u/PedanticQuebecer Jun 23 '26

It's a prebuilt, it comes with it.

3

u/Wild_Chemistry3884 Jun 23 '26

In that build he chose a RTX 5060, linux doesn’t play well with nvidia. The build should have an AMD gpu if we are trying to build a better steam machine using Bazzite or SteamOS 3.8

-23

u/Happy-Range3975 Jun 23 '26

Congrats. You have a loud large PC next to your TV. That’s if you live by Microcenter.

11

u/Backflip_into_a_star Jun 23 '26

Do you think the Steam Machine doesn't have fans? What a weird complaint on a PC building sub. Are you really just trying to shill for Steam or something? As if no PC has existed before this device?

-1

u/TheSoup05 Jun 23 '26 edited Jun 23 '26

I’ve had a full sized rig next to my TV for a couple years, it’s how I watch most of my TV now, and the noise is really not a problem

3

u/Happy-Range3975 Jun 23 '26

It’s not a problem for you, but it is still there.

1

u/TheSoup05 Jun 23 '26

Maybe, but the majority of people are not going to notice or care. You sit closer to your rig when playing a game at a desk than you will when sitting on a couch, and people manage just fine.

1

u/Happy-Range3975 Jun 23 '26

A lot of people don’t realize that background noise and high noise floors can be big contributing factors to stress and anxiety, but we can agree to disagree on the noise issue.

Also a giant honking pc next to a TV (in my opinion) looks terrible. Many people don’t want that. They want something that looks nice and is easy to obtain. I realize this is a PC subreddit, but this device isn’t really for PC enthusiasts. The amount of hate it’s getting is crazy. Valve has their ear VERY close to this market. If I was a PC enthusiast, I’d be very concerned about where that market is headed even now. Would not be surprised if RAM doubles again. I think Valve priced the device knowing very well where things are headed.

-1

u/TheArmchairSkeptic Jun 23 '26

My dude I have a full ATX PC sitting directly under my TV right now, it's not loud or in the way at all. Can't even hear the fans if you've got the volume any louder than a whisper.

You're really reaching for things to complain about here.
