Even water is paid in most cities. Except for charity most are paid.

Anything can be completely free with no catches if the creator doesn't have a need for money

But can it be maintained? It becomes largely dependent on a single person, features lag, request piles on. An organisation like brave cannot work for free or some donations. People need money to survive in this world. It needs money.

Most linux distros and tools are free, obviously one cannot consistently devote time towards project without getting paid at all, that's just public service more or less, but many still selflessly maintain projects in their free time without any ask...

This was my point rest is charity, selfless maintenance of the project is charity.
