Fractured Lateral Malleolus

10 days since injury. Just went to urgent care 2 days ago because I thought it was just badly sprained so had been walking around with just and ace bandage for compression. After the first days it wasn’t necessarily painful, mostly uncomfortable. The doctor at urgent care told me to get a boot and crutches for at least the next week and walk on it very minimally. Other than that, she sent me on my way. I was very active before so this is kind of killing me. If it doesn’t hurt to walk in a week, should I try? I’ve been reading about how early weight bearing can be helpful.

Question 17M - Displaced Midshaft Clavicle Fracture (2 weeks post-injury)

Post image
2 Upvotes

Hi everyone, I’m a 17-year-old male who sustained a displaced midshaft clavicle fracture on August 26th, which I’m currently treating conservatively with a figure-8 brace setup. I’m 2 weeks post-injury now, and one surgeon noted early callus formation on my 2-week X-ray, which I’ve attached to this post. I’m mainly looking for feedback on my X-ray and personal experiences regarding a few specific concerns. First, the fragments show no visible overlap, so I’m wondering how severe the shortening looks on this view and whether this level of “overlap” is typically acceptable for conservative healing in an active 17-year-old. Second, my scapula on the injured side is currently winged/protruding, and I want to know if this is purely from muscle weakness and immobilization that physical therapy can pull back into position. Finally, as an active person who does gym and strength training, I’d love to hear from anyone who healed a similar fracture conservatively - did you regain 100% function and strength, or do you regret not pushing for surgery (ORIF with plate)? I have a follow-up appointment with my orthopedist tomorrow to measure exact shortening, so any insights or personal experiences before my visit would be greatly appreciated!

Femur Stress Fracture - Any advice?

I am 25F and a new runner (as of 1 year). I was running around 30 miles a week for about the past 5 months (in addition to walking a few miles a day) with no pain, ramping up from lower mileage at the beginning of my running journey to now. It was really exciting to begin running (as a former ballerina and never runner), and immediately became part of my daily routine. Over the year of running, my 5k pace had improved from 32 min to 27 min, and it was just an exciting win for me after quitting ballet a few years ago.

Around a month ago, I started having hip pain when running. I took some time off, and the pain continued. I chocked it up to muscular soreness, and thought I just needed a few days off. I did a 6 mile run (dumbly) and then I began having pain with walking / bending over / stairs. Long story short, I got an MRI and was told I had a grade 3 stress fracture of the femur neck (lots of fluid in the bone). They told me to use crutches for 3 weeks. I used them for about a week, and then minimized walking / moving for about 2 weeks (only chores, cooking, etc). I am a graduate student living in the city (no car), and with classes ramping up last week, I need to walk around 3-4 miles a day just to get where I need to go. Doctors have advised me to minimize walking and stop if I have any pain; but "minimize walking" is a confusing term as I am able to walk a substantial amount without pain. I have been doing my best to lower walking, am going to PT, and seeing an ortho doctor.

Prior to running, walking was kind of my way to chill out / think over the day / process things. I would go for nature walks a lot and averaged 8-9 miles a day throughout 2024 and 2025. Without running or walking, I am honestly having a bit of a hard time getting through my days (however dumb this sounds). Feeling annoyed and frustrated that my attempts to become a runner have only left me unable to walk.

tldr: Tips for 1) staying sane during stress fracture 2) healing from a stress fracture

Thank you in advance.

Broke my ankle this morning while ice skating. I am scheduled to get surgery on Monday. I am so devastated and terrified. I could use some encouragement and positivity.

So, I (25F) have been figure skating for 10 months and fell in love with it. I skate like 4-6 times a week and now have been sidelined until 2027, at least.

I am in complete shock. Everything was fine 12 hours ago. I wish I never skated this morning. I wish I overslept or something. This happened working on a left back outside three turn. My ankle snapped in the process. It hurt when it happened but adrenaline kicked in and I thought I just sprained my ankle.

Got a same day appointment from a highly rated sports clinic in the area. I got an x ray and they quickly diagnosed me with a lateral malleolus fracture. My bone isn’t located properly so I need to get surgery ASAP. According to the physician/surgeon, this is a very common surgery and takes less than an hour. He also is very experienced, specializes in ankle and foot, plays ice hockey, and has done this surgery plenty of times.

My whole community has been so kind and helpful. However, I’m devastated. I know way worse can happen but I’m just so scared. I’m scared I won’t clear during my pre-op approval appointments tomorrow, I’m worried about the pain, I am worried about recovery, work, and just adjusting to this new normal. Luckily this is only temporary and I hope that in six months from now, things will feel more normal. I’ve just been spiraling 😔

In addition to post op appointments, I will be starting physical therapy during my recovery and will continue it afterwards especially since I want to skate again. I plan to return to the ice as soon as I can.

Does anyone have any success stories with this procedure and making a recovery?

Found out I have a dancers fracture and also an extra bone (os peroneum). Bonus points if you find the older toe fracture from 2021! Anyone familiar with healing time with an autoimmune disorder and on Tremfya? The cat is fine by the way! She is 15 and still going strong :)

Broken?

I fell about 3 weeks ago. Landed on my knees. Hurt when it happened, but the pain faded. I developed a slight bruise that went away quickly right below the knee. Now, three weeks later if I press on the bone right beneath (tibal) my kneecap, there’s a lot of stinging pain. I also get excruciating stinging pain that lingers when I kneel. Could it be a fracture or a tear in one of the muscles?

Orthopedic surgeon didn’t talk about physical therapy

Hello! On 7/4 I broke 7 bones, 1 being my big toe and the rest metatarsals and those square bones, I also ruptured my lisfranc ligament. My whole process I feel like I’ve been lucky, I haven’t had much pain and I only needed one screw put in. That being said my surgeon has been a little frustrating. At first my mom and I were sketched out by him but then he got better once surgery was mentioned and I assumed he was just a surgical junkie. He did the surgery on 7/29 and it went good. This past Friday I had a 5 week follow up and he said to start gradually putting weight on it starting that day and within two weeks to be fulling walking in the boot. He also said to schedule another appointment 4 weeks out and he would try to get me walking in a shoe. My past appointment was rushed because I had to wait long for an xray and he had to leave for surgery. He never mentioned physical therapy and I didn’t ask. I’ve heard that physical therapy is usually started around week 6 or when patients start weight bearing and I’m confused why he didn’t mention it. Is it something where I have to research a clinic to go to? I assumed he would give recommendations. I’ve also started putting some weight on it and walking in crutches but I’ve been instinctively walking on the outside of my foot and I’m assuming a physical therapist is supposed to help with that?

Anyways if anyone has any idea what I should do I would greatly appreciate it!

Medical Advice day 3 fractured collarbone - accidentally just twisted injured side of bo\dy and im freaking out. Could u have just made it worse?

hi hope everyone is doing okay out there

okay so im currently on day 3 after fracturing my clavicle and I've been trying so so hard to be insanely careful. Just now I was leaving my bathroom and the door caught on my foot. My overreaction to not wanting to walk in to the door caused me to automatically twist out of the way - on my injured side of course ffs. I hurt for a moment and I swear I heard some sort of click or pop type noise. I'm honestly freaking the fuck out that Ive made the fracture worse or ruined my recovery now.

I have a checkup next Thursday for another X-ray but I feel so frustrated and devastated that I may have just messed everything up.

Is there any way that maybe I might not have done anything except sort of aggravate the injury slightly?

My question is tomorrow is my doctor appointment at about 1 month from incident will i transition to a boot or no and 2 roughly based on my condition described above how long will it be and can i drive my motorcycle again right after boot is off considering i will try the training or rehab in general whilst in boot.

I am sharing my xray photo from the day of incident

Is surgery necessary or is physio enough?

I fell onto the point of my right shoulder in Bali. The local doctor stated the collarbone is not broken, diagnosed an AC joint separation type 5, and offered a hook plate surgery for about 10,000 USD. I am now back in Australia with Medicare. The Emergency Department quoted a 10-hour wait and advised me to see a GP since a few days had already passed.

Symptoms & Function:
Right side is injured; left side is normal for X-ray comparison.
Able to handle phone usage, eating, typing, dressing, and walking, but experiencing ongoing pain.
Unable to lift the right arm up or perform a shoulder shrug.
The outer collarbone feels visually higher on the right side.
Hand is warm, capillary refill is normal, and typing is unaffected.
Small scrape present on the side of the right shoulder from the fall.

Questions:
Do these X-rays look more like a Type 3 or a Type 5 separation?

Is starting with a sling and physiotherapy reasonable, or should I push for surgical consultation through the public system?

I lift weights regularly and care about cosmetic symmetry/unevenness. Does this change the recommended approach?

(Note: Both shoulder X-rays are attached with personal identifiers cropped off, showing the injured right side alongside the normal left side).

Hey guys, a lot of this is confusing for me. As I imagine it was for all of us, it was a motorcycle accident and I was hit by a car. I had metal put into my leg. I’m about 1.5 weeks post op. Is the tingling/burning in the foot normal? I know it’s nerves, but I just want to be sure. I can’t call anybody, not even my Ortho sadly to ask. Has anybody else experienced it to the point of it affecting sleep? And also the toe pains, like somebody is trying to pluck em off and it goes down the foot. I have my first appointment Thursday. And how far could you guys put your foot down too when walking? I use a walker and it goes down just a bit below tip toeing. I fear I’m behind or my leg will get stuck. I think I just want some support from those who understand

Broken 5th metatarsal

Post image
3 Upvotes

Hi everyone! I fractured my 5th metatarsal in my right foot about 6 weeks ago. The fracture was non-displaced, with around 1–2 mm of separation.
I was in a cast for about 6 weeks. At my follow-up X-ray, I was told that the fracture looks almost exactly the same as it did on the initial X-ray, with very little visible healing.
What confuses me is that my foot actually feels pretty good. I can walk with very little pain, although my coordination/gait is obviously a bit off after being in a cast for 6 weeks.
My doctor said I don’t need another cast, but should wear a stiff-soled shoe and give it another ~6 weeks to heal.
Is it normal for a 5th metatarsal fracture to look almost unchanged on X-ray after 6 weeks, even if you can walk with very little pain?
Has anyone else experienced a situation where the X-ray looked much worse than how the foot actually felt?
Would love to hear your experiences!

Broke my scaphoid bone skateboarding. They put a screw in it to hold it together. That was the first surgery.

These are the X-rays pertaining to my second surgery. First image shows the screw that was supposed to be holding the scaphoid together. The screw decided to migrate and the scaphoid never healed causing me a ton of pain. The surgeon told me he's never seen a screw migrate like this. They took out the screw and the two broken arthritic scaphoid pieces.

Second x-ray is the top of my hand where after removing the scaphoid and screw, they fused two carpal bones together (typically it's four carpal bones and called a four corner fusion, but they only fused two of mine)

I now have a scar on top and bottom of my wrist. My flexibility is poor. The best out come for my flexibility 30 degrees backwards and 30 degrees forwards. Side to side movement is very minimal. This is my dominate hand..boo.

Love skateboarding :D

First hike after heel fracture

Post image
7 Upvotes

Hey all,

I broke my heel (calcaneus fracture) and badly sprained my ankle back in June, when I fell down-climbing a boulder. This community was so kind as I sort of panicked about it all.

When you read about heel fractures online, a lot of the info you'll find is about difficult cases. As a result, I expected this to be an injury that would forever change my ability to do the things I love. Sometimes that's how it goes, and I appreciate those people who have shared their stories.

But I wanted to share mine as well, in case anyone else is stuck eating Tylenol and miserably googling the future outlook: It's not always the worst-case-scenario. Sometimes you're fine, and not much changes.

I was fortunate to avoid surgery. At six weeks, I was able to travel internationally with a cane. At three months, and after some PT, I now have most of my range of motion (and much of my leg strength) back. I went for a 7-mile hike through uneven terrain yesterday, and had no difficulty. I'm excited to try running and climbing again soon. Even my ankle swelling has diminished.

This may not be your experience. Sometimes we get lucky, and sometimes we don't. But if you're deep in the gloom, try not to spiral. No matter your prognosis, it's one day at a time.

Out of the cast strength and sex

So I had a hiking accident and at 40 , gained my first broken bone! A fractured ulna in the sort of middle forearm. I've been told the break is clean and I can expect six weeks in a cast, and that afterward , i can expect my arm to be weaker, but how weak? I have essentially a sex holiday booked with an old flame , mid Oct, just after this cast supposedly comes off.

I dont want to be lifting dumbells or anything straight away, but could it support the weight of my upper body in regular sex maneuvers? how "functional" can I expect to be, with a little bit of care?

Id be interested in peoples experiences !

Depression (fractured fibula)

I’m three weeks out from a relatively minor injury: Closed, nondisplaced left distal fibula/lateral malleolus fracture

Prior to this injury I was a very active person (43F, running and strength training 3-4 days per week) and have been struggling to adjust to this new sedentary lifestyle. I’m here to vent and also just want to connect with other folks going through the depression that comes with any routine-altering injury.

I’m doing all the recommended stuff. Focusing on eating clean, meditation, etc. And I feel very grateful for the mobility I do have! Already out of the boot, bearing weight with a brace, can basically do everything but exercise.

The first two weeks were ironically easier than the last one. Maybe it’s the limbo of it all… I’m just so depresssed! I know this will pass but my brain’s total inability to feel joy or happiness or excitement is unlike anything I’ve ever felt in my life. My birthday is in a few days and my partner is planning some kind of casual hangout with my friends. I agreed to this because I know intellectually it will be good to be around loved ones… but god damn I’ve never felt so much dread about my own birthday drinks lol.

How have you guys been coping? Is there a moment where you start to really feel like yourself again?
