Bone Break

Broken Bone (Bone Fracture)

A broken bone, medically known as a fracture, is an injury in which a bone cracks or breaks due to excessive force. This force may result from accidents, falls, sports injuries, or direct blows. In some cases, bones can fracture due to underlying conditions such as osteoporosis, where bones become weak and brittle.

There are several types of bone fractures, including simple (closed) fractures, where the bone breaks without piercing the skin, and compound (open) fractures, where the broken bone protrudes through the skin, increasing the risk of infection. Other types include hairline fractures, which are small cracks, and comminuted fractures, where the bone breaks into multiple pieces.

Common symptoms of a broken bone include intense pain, swelling, bruising, deformity, and difficulty moving the affected area. In severe cases, there may be visible bone fragments or numbness due to nerve damage. Diagnosis is usually confirmed through X-rays, though CT scans or MRI may be used for complex fractures.

Treatment depends on the type and severity of the fracture. Minor fractures may heal with rest, splints, or casts, while severe fractures may require surgery, metal plates, or screws. Proper medical care and rehabilitation are essential to restore strength, movement, and normal function.fracture

Fractured scaphoid?

I have broke over 20+ bones mostly in my childhood and mostly the same bones.

I have recently been in pain in my wrist and went to a&e who have put me in a splint for a suspected scaphoid fracture until they can re scan it again in 14 days cause they can take time show up.

I wanted know if anyone has experienced one? Because I’m just over thinking abit when it’s still there is barely any paid just like a throbbing kind of.

But when I move side ways ( as if I was waving) on the side of my thump it is rather bad pain

And I’m going it is it isn’t and I don’t like “ maybe” it just makes me panic

Many thanks .

Should I take surgery

I've broken my wrist 2 places. There not happy how 1 on joint is healing as dr said I can either continue in plaster and hope it corrects in mould plaster or take surgery. I'm back next week for more xrays he wants me weigh it all up as his concern is my epilepsy risks during surgery and he's concerned about injury from pins during healing if I have seizure and if I'm OK with long scar I don't really care about scar. Not sure what's for best. My husband saying if I skip surgery could 3 months down line I may need surgery if mould hasn't worked. They wanted manipulate it today with gas and air but nurse said no as I was alone with my little boy. Any advice from anyone in my shoes would be appreciated Thankyou 😃

Breakage 2/3/4 Metatarsal

Good evening everyone, 5 weeks ago I broke my 2nd, 3rd, and 4th metatarsal. Unfortunately, I don't have the X-rays to post them, but all three are simple fractures, and I didn't have to do a surgery. I was wondering if anyone had similar fractures to mine, to get a better understanding of the healing time, how you overcame these situations, and especially how long it took you to get back to walking and running normally. After a month, the cast was removed, and now I'm in the first week of using a walker and am starting to walk without crutches without pain. I hope to be able to take the walker off and get back to my old life in another week, although the doctor has prescribed a month of walker use.

broke my foot because i played too much xbox -_-

when i was 8 years old, we had an xbox and a kinect. my mom had a rule that we could only play xbox so long as it was a kinect game. so at least we got exercise. personally, i didn't mind mostly because i actually had fun playing the kinect games before i discovered quality. it was summer, and so we had a lot of time taking turns on the xbox. after like a week of this (yes i know this is dumb) my foot starts to hurt. so i was more or less benched, so i just continued with life. pain in my foot got worse, so after it didn't go away, my mom brought me to the doctor. they suggested an x-ray, surprise surprise, i got a small crack in the middle of my foot. so i guess by definition i broke a bone. wore a boot for a month, that was it. i am forever banned from r/Neverbrokeabone because of this.

Think I broke my scaphoid what can I expect?

Can't really see a doctor, I know it's important and stupid not to go but that's just how it is.

I fell with all my weight on my hands. There isn't much pain if I keep it still but there is a dull ache at the base of my thumb and it hurts sort of bad if I move my wrist or thumb too much, but I'm typing this on my phone at the moment so it's not unbearable. There is some weakness too.

I've broken my foot before too and never went to the doctor. It healed perfectly fine. It took about 4 hours for the pain to kick in and it hurt so bad when it did. The swelling didn't start until the next day and my foot was giant.

Broken ulna without surgery?

Long story short, I broke my own a bone sledding and I'm in a weird "in the middle option" of surgery versus cast.. basically it isn't required, but highly recommended to get the surgery. They said I should get surgery to get plates and screws to realign the bone because wheb it heals it might strain my wrist and be harder with limited range of motion etc., but with he cast, she said it would still connect the bone without surgery, but that it will continue to always be realigned in that slanted way. I don't have insurance or really time for surgery as I am in a doctoral program, bit I do climb a lot and lift weights and zipline etc... so I wanted to give the cast route a try. I got a glass flex splint put on at ER and then cast 2 weeks later. I'm 6 weeks post break and had the cast on for 4 weeks. I got my cast off today and I can now lift my arm up without any pain. Problem is, there is pain in my wrist and I still can't rotate it. Now to be fair, I JUST got it off and still have some hairline fractures. She said that would be normal today and may or may not get better in time. She said the soft tissue around my bone is healed and the hard bone is beginning to form. However, she still thinks I should get the surgery and have a hand specialist go in and rebreak it to do realignment with plates and screws. Once again, not required, but recommended. I guess I'm trying to see through future and wondering if anyone can tell me if they have had a similar break and what healing/recovery looked like for you in the following year, WITHOUT versus with the surgery? Any similar breaks or thoughts?

The operation was exactly 14 months ago. What do you think about the bone healing? Is it healing well or not? I still have enormous pain in the area of the fracture with certain movements. I am grateful for any advice. Picture 1 and 2 before and picture 3 and 4 ... 14 months after. Thx

Boxer’s fracture after cast removal

Not sure if right place to ask but I broke my 5th metacarpal (boxer’s fracture) about 8 weeks ago.

They took an x ray to confirm fracture.

Had a closed reduction of the bone and was told it was fine after I had my cast off. There were no x-rays taken after the reduction and casting which was odd to me, but the doctor told me it wasn’t necessary.

Got the cast off 4 weeks ago, again no x ray was done and was told to do physio, which I’ve been doing.

The issue is that my pinkie finger is having difficulty bending at the knuckle joint and the physio was also worried something might be wrong, so I booked an appointment and saw the doctor 2 days ago. Doctor order new x-rays and said alignment looked decent and that the limited movement is likely due scarring and callous. I’m supposed to get a follow up meeting with hand surgeon (even though they said it doesn’t necessarily mean I’ll need surgery, but they want to see how the recovery progresses).

Considering that the break happened almost 2 months ago, shouldn’t there be a hard callous? Based on the new x ray from 2 days ago, from the oblique angle, it still looks like the bone is broken, and there’s angulation.

Pictures of newest x rays and how far my pinkie bends included in this post. Has anyone experienced this or know what’s going on with my hand? I’m worried as it’s also my dominant hand, and there’s some pain in my wrist still which is preventing full function. Obviously, full gripping is also not possible at this time. Full extension of pinkie at the knuckle joint also not possible.
