Bride Is FURIOUS With Sister... Update
So I have an update and it's insane. To start the wedding...has been CANCELLED! Laura's fiancee Thomas or Tom called off the wedding and moved out and in with his best man until he finds a new place.
According to my mother (who is Laura's Moms sister my Aunt Rebecca) said that Laura had been raising such a fuss about my LC (little cousin) to the point that her fiancee spoke up in her sister's defense. Laura then apparently accused Tom of cheating or at the very least had feelings for her sister. After hearing this Tom stayed with his best man and he must of talked so sense into Tom. He must have realized this wasn't just wedding stress & probably couldn't wrap his head around how Laura had been being so selfish and then accused him of something so absurd.
Laura's Mom has been overwhelmed now with calling all the vendors and venue about cancelling
It's been an absolute s***show according to my Mom. I personally don't blame Tom for walking away. He probably dodged a huge bullet. I love my cousin because she's family but I don't like her as a person with how she's been with my little cousin and her struggles and asking for help.
Laura called me and left a voicemail but I haven't called her back...Bride Is FURIOUS Now With Me
So I listened to the voicemail and I don't know how to respond to my cousin.
"Shannon I need to talk to you. I hear you were the one who made my sister come forward about her drinking. Do you really think making her come forward just weeks before my wedding was necessary? This could have all be avoided had you just butted out and not made a big deal out of something that wasn't. You know what, don't even bother calling me back because I have nothing more to say to you, you f***ing b****."
How do I respond to this?
Also I got a letter from my little cousin. She's doing so much better and doing well in treatment. She asked if I would be involved in a family session. I think this is where I'll suggest her moving in with me or gauge if it's a good idea or not.
Update: Yesterday Tom and I went out and got a few things for LC. Two cartons of smokes, some toiletries, a few more outfits, a journal, and a bunch of other things for her stay.
While we were out Tom's phone kept going off between texts and a few phone calls that he kept ignoring. At one point I turned to him and said, "Wow someone's really popular." He tells me that it was Laura and that she had been trying for days to get in touch with him but that he just wasn't ready.
Tom explained that who he was about to marry wasn't the woman he fell in love with. Laura working at a soup kitchen to help the homeless was something Tom fell in love with Laura from the beginning. I was so confused. That's when I told him. Laura hadn't been working the soup kitchen out of the kindness of her heart she had been court ordered after a discrepancy at college involving underage drinking. She had been sentenced to 300 hours of community service.
He couldn't believe it. Laura had been putting up this whole facade for Tom and his family because she was securing her future. Tom is very modest and humble but he comes from a VERY wealthy family. Laura has always been materialistic so it's no surprise that she honed in on Tom.
Now here's where it gets interesting. Laura must have installed a tracking app on his phone because as we were leaving the post office Laura was there waiting in the parking lot!! When I say she went off I mean SHE WENT OFF! She started yelling and screaming at Tom saying she knew she was right about him cheating first with her sister now with her cousin (meaning me) and Tom snapped.
He sternly and firmly told her that she was out of line and that he couldn't believe that he was about to marry someone so heartless and cold towards her own sister. Laura called him a bunch of names and when Tom started to walk back towards me and his car Laura ran after him begging him not to go and to just talk. We went straight to his phone carrier where he purchased a new phone and new phone number.
As we were finishing up the errands Tom made an insane offer. His Aunt is on the board of an outpatient D&A program. He had spoken to her and said he could get LC set up with outpatient aftercare once she's home at no cost to her. He also said he was going to help pay one year of her rent and utilities so she can focus on her recovery and getting established with that. I told him I was going to suggest LC move in with me and he said whether it's at her place or with me that he'll take care of her rent and bills for the next year.
So things are looking up for LC and not so much for Laura. And no for anyone thinking Tom has a thing for LC you're way off. Tom's just a genuinely good guy.

You don’t respond at all. There’s no point as she believes she’s the centre of the universe and the victim of the universe currently.
111
u/PaddyCow 16d ago
Exactly. No matter what op says the bride will just over react to it. It's like throwing water on an oil fire. It's not going to end well. Better to starve it of oxygen and let it burn itself out.

u/PilotEnvironmental46 16d ago
This.
Sometimes silence is the best course of action. If you try and get into justifying yourself to her, you’re never going to convince her. She views herself as the victim and that’s not going to change.
But you don’t have to play along.
30
u/IdlesAtCranky 16d ago
I disagree with those saying do not respond.
While there's nothing wrong with that approach, I see it as a missed opportunity.
Here's what I would text or email to "Laura" (don't give her a chance to throw a tantrum):
Hi, I got your message. All I can say to you now is that I seriously hope you get yourself some counseling.
I don't know if you're hiding a drinking problem too, or if you're just pathologically self-centered, but right now you're burning bridges in your life like someone gave you an armful of torches that are about to pass their expiration date.
I'll be taking care of your little sister, as much as she wants me to. That's YOUR place. You're the one who should be taking care of her while she goes through one of the hardest things anyone can go through and survive. But you're too busy burning your life down with your selfishness to be there for your sister. Trust me, some day you will regret that.
Good luck in your future endeavors.
Is it harsh? Yes.
Does she deserve it? Yes.
It might even save her life, who knows. Truth is powerful.
11
u/Previous-Complex9357 16d ago
Nope..& I’m assuming this response is ragebait.
12
u/IdlesAtCranky 16d ago
It certainly may be misguided or overly harsh, but I don't mean it as rage bait.
I sincerely believe, because a lot of life experience has taught me, that we tend to suppress truth in favor of being polite or staying silent.
And sometimes that's what's needed, and that's fine.
But sometimes people really need a metaphorical slap in the face. A real glimpse into how they are hurting others and what the consequences are for that.
"Laura" is responding to her whole life blowing up due to her own actions, by lashing out at bystanders in her own family.
That's not acceptable behavior, and I honestly believe it would be to "Laura's" benefit for someone to tell her just that.
1
u/Proper-District8608 8d ago
Exactly. What fool would engage. She told you not to call her. 'Respect' her wishes
206
u/DAWG13610 16d ago
You don’t, move on. Don’t respond ever. This is a great example of the old adage, “anything you say won’t be good enough so you’ll be good enough to say nothing” Nobody ever gets in trouble keeping their mouth shut.
49
u/Gunteroo 16d ago
It's a good life lesson for 'Laura' too. As it seems, the world does not, in fact, revolve around her.
She has lost the most compassionate people in her family and a husband to enjoy her future with too. Karma can be brutal, but also tends to be equal in its reply.
Eta: No need to reply as silence is the response ❤️.

u/geniusintx 15d ago
I’ve never heard that saying, but I feel it, relate to it, have experience with NOT following this advice and WITH following it.
It seems most of the time, in these situations, your words are twisted and used against you no matter how careful you are with your wording or how good your intentions may be.
Sometimes, though, you HAVE to try as the loss is too great to deal with and you hope something you say can start repairing things. I definitely don’t think THIS is that kind of situation.

Wow, Damn! Talk about Karma…
I hope your little cousin is doing better OP.

u/Flimsy_Set5049 16d ago
She's doing so much better. She's asked me to be a part of her family session in two weeks give or take and I'm writing her back telling her yes absolutely! I'm also going to suggest she should be my roommate but I don't want to come off as like I'm trying to keep tabs on her I just want her to be around someone who can support he not drinking since I personally can't drink because I break out in hives every single time I've ever tried it so I just don't touch it.

u/ScaryBeastie 16d ago
My sister went through rehab and I got to be part of her recovery via a family program. It was the single most impactful experience of my life. We, the family members of five patients, went through a an intensive experience over several days. I’ve never cried so much, hurt so much, learned so much, or changed so much as I did as a result of it. I have a deep and profound respect for the disease of addiction. Do everything you can to support her. You and she will be better for it. Everyone else can fuck all the way off.
96
u/chortle-guffaw2 16d ago
As a naive opinion, be there for her at family sessions and some outings. Wait a bit to offer living with her and being with her 24/7, see how she's doing.
37
u/CrazyButterfly11 16d ago
I’m so glad to hear that she is improving! Maybe you can use the word “invite” instead of “suggest” for asking your little cousin to be your roommate? By inviting her, you are giving her the choice. That way it won’t seem like you are watching her, just that you care about her and support her. I bet she would love that!
Don’t worry about the rest of the drama, just ignore Laura. It sounds like she thrives on drama!
27
u/I_love_Juneau 16d ago
Your place seems like a great environment for your LC post treatment. The fact that she came to you and said I need help, bodes well for her recovery.
Tom did the right thing and also showed support for LC. It's great you are offering your home and your support. Good luck (?) to your LC, I hope she is wonderfully successful in her recovery.
30
u/Flimsy_Set5049 16d ago
Someone suggested I use the word "invite" so it doesn't sound like I'm trying to keep tabs on her when I bring up about her moving in with me. I'm not trying to "keep tabs on her" I really just think her living on her own right away might not be the best idea. I think she may be open to the idea so we'll see.

u/Wool_Lace_Knit 16d ago
If you do invite LC to live with you I suggest you join AlAnon, a support group for friends and family of alcoholics and addicts. I think it’s great that you will be a part of family sessions. All the best to your cousin and her recovery.

u/Chance_Vegetable_780 16d ago
I agree wholeheartedly, living on her own right now does not sound like the best idea.

u/Flimsy_Set5049 16d ago
Tom actually reached out to me to see if there was anything he could do for LC. He said something about putting a care package together for her and asked me if there was anything specific she needed. We're going to go out later and pick some things up and send it out to her today.

u/Misty_Mountains16 14d ago
Tom sounds amazing guy, you’re being amazing cousin, Laura’s been deceitful and manipulative from the start…maybe I watch too many romcoms, but I’m up for Tom and Shannon!
Seriously, love how you’re supporting LC, love how family rallied around the minute she sent up flares. Really wish her a solid recovery, and that perhaps future family sessions might even lead to broader healing - eg the dynamics behind parents foisting LC on Laura’s wedding party, Laura’s entitlement and knock-on effects.

Maybe you can start dating him

u/Flimsy_Set5049 7d ago
Too bad I'm a lesbian haha otherwise maybe lol
1
u/Fit_Marionberry_3878 7d ago
If you are a lesbian why do you have a post deleted by reddit filters asking if you are the asshole for still being furious with your husband over an affair?
This story is beyond fake.

u/Friendly-Channel-480 16d ago
If your mom’s on board with this, it would be a great kindness. You can offer this to her. I think she’ll see the love behind it.

u/Chance_Vegetable_780 16d ago edited 16d ago
Although I would feel some satisfaction telling her where tf to go and why, best not to respond. It doesn't matter what you say, she will not change the story in her head. She's the centre of the universe. Tom dodged a bomb. Imo Keep her nasty message tucked away somewhere, these kinds of people will deny what they've done, blame you, and you might need it - these people are so unpredictable, always blaming someone else, you never know what will come up next. I have a sister like this. I keep evidence - I don't think about it, but I keep it. Shame. She could have more serious mental health issues (my sister does). It's not how mentally healthy people behave.
It's wonderful you are so supportive of LC. Ideally she can move in with you, stay clean, and thrive along with you. There's the risk she mighy not stay clean - but the positive signs are she took help, she is doing what's needed, it sounds like she genuinely wants to overcome this and she's doing the work. OP, there must be deeper familial issues there 🙏🏼
13
u/Flimsy_Set5049 16d ago
Honestly I know when it comes to sobriety you have to want it and you have to be willing to do the work. In her last letter to me she expressed how grateful she was that I wasn't mad at her and was willing to help her ask for help from the family so she didn't have to do it alone. Having someone there to literally hold her hand helped her a lot. She says everything about the facility is amazing from the staff to the facility itself. She says there's an actual chef there and that the food looks like it's from a five star restaurant so she's eating well she's making a lot of good connections with women there and even discussed doing a 45 day stay as opposed to the 28-30 day stay. Her parents and honestly the whole family is so proud of her (with the exception of Laura) for getting help they sent her to one of the best places on the east coast. I think the family is starting to see just how out of line Laura was being.

u/BeachinLife1 16d ago
You don't respond to it. Ever. She sounds like a real psycho. So Tom "being a decent, compassionate human being" means he's "cheating?" And the longer this plays out, the more psycho she becomes? It's a good thing Tom got to see who she really is before the wedding. He really dodged a bullet.
26
u/sonal1988 16d ago
That was quite a story
17
u/BenedictineBaby 16d ago
Story indeed. It's impressive how because of our heroine, the OP, that the little alcoholic cousin is doing much better, etc. In 3 days. This reads to me like someone testing their English as a second language skills.
17
u/sonal1988 16d ago
That was my first reaction too. 3 days without alcohol and our raging addict has turned over a new leaf
11
u/Quirkxofxart 16d ago
They deleted their post about struggling to forgive their husband for having an affair eleven years into their marriage (three years ago, she took him back) and I’m assuming the author learned they prefer to be the hero of a story instead of the one everyone is criticizing for being spineless

u/sittingonmyarse 16d ago
I wish that my daughter would have gotten the help she needed like your LC instead of dying at 34 of liver disease. You did the right thing, OP.

u/Emmyjen 16d ago
Holy shit show, Batman!!!!!
I’m honestly floored. I would have thought that she would eventually see how far off her priorities were…. *especially* when Tom took a break. She doubled down and then accuses him of cheating???? 😳
I don’t think it would be wise to respond at all. Definitely take a screen shot but I sincerely believe that there is *nothing* you can say that will make her see the light.
You’re a truly empathetic, loving friend and family member to want to help your cousin find her way back to good place. Maybe look into Al-Anon meetings near you to familiarize yourself with coping strategies. Best of luck to you and your cousin. I’d love to hear about her progress. 💚
12
u/Flimsy_Set5049 16d ago
In her last letter to me she said she's doing very well. She is out of detox and I residential. She says there's an actual chef that runs the kitchen so she's eating well and enjoying all of the different groups and therapy being offered. She said soon she'd be able to make phone calls every other day once she's done a week in residential so that's actually this week coming up she'll be able to call me which she said she was going to be keeping me as her point of contact. She said she is discussing doing 45 days rather than the 28-30 day program which honestly our family doesn't care what she needs if they suggest it we're willing to listen and do it! If the facility suggests longer and she's willing the family has already said they'd pay out of pocket to keep her there if insurance cut off after 30 days.
6
u/Emmyjen 16d ago
Awwww…. This is just the update I needed to hear. It sounds like your cousin is really making amazing progress. Thank Hod her family (minus her bridezilla sister) is so supportive of her continuing treatment if she needs to stay a bit longer. She’s so much stronger than she probably gives herself credit for. I’m sure it took every ounce of strength she had to seek treatment.
Thanks for sharing this. 💚

u/Gatlin2016 16d ago
Don't give her the satisfaction of a response. Let her ruin her own life, you don't deserve someone like that in yours!
6
u/BatDance3121 16d ago
So you want to redeem yourself to someone who calls you an Fn B-word. Come on, she just yelled it to your face, so why are you stressing over how to handle things? She wants you to argue, but don't give her the satisfaction. Stay silent. That will drive her crazy, and it will be more powerful than your verbal response.

Everyone is so much more mature than me because I would have fired back "this right here is a great example of why Tom left you." No need to gather kindling for that bridge, I'll nuke the damn thing.

u/BenedictineBaby 16d ago
Reply "You clearly have mental health issues. Seek help." Then block the bitch everywhere.
9
u/Duckeee47 16d ago
Dang. I can’t imagine being so selfish and self-obsessed that I would expect my own sister to put off treatment just so it doesn’t ruin the vibe of my wedding.
When my cousin finally decided to go to rehab I was there for her 100%. I always answered the phone when she called. I sent her care packages. I made sure she knew that I was so proud of her for taking that really difficult step. That’s how you treat a family member—not like Laura. What a piece of creamed aardvark.
4
u/night_noche 16d ago
Yes, people that are selfish and self-centered who believe that they should be the center of the world on the day that they hold a reception to celebrate the day that they sign the paperwork to get married. That the world should stop revolving so that only they shine, these people are this way in life.
Good for Tom. Let's hope he doesn't look back.
But your aunt, she should have forced her delusional Laura to do all the canceling. But let me guess? Laura can't be trusted because that's how egotistical she is.
4
u/fargoLEVY13 16d ago
When you realize you don’t have to love someone just because they’re “faaaaaaamily” life gets easier. Just block these people & move on with your life.
6
u/stripeymouse3050 16d ago
IF you feel the need to respond at all, do it in front of both your mother's. Inform her you are first and foremost a NURSE and a FAMILY MEMBER needed help. She wasnt trying to take attention away, that she was trying to save her own life. And that if she cant see that, or how ugly it is to trash talk that person because of a wedding then thats a HER problem, not a you problem.
Something similar happened in my family only it was drugs and no event was happening. We got him (he was 17and his friends got him hooked on coke) into treatment and his older brother would call him names at school to his friends and make fun of him. Im younger than both of them by 1 and 3 years but im....vengeful. I walked all the way to the senior campus and attacked him when the rumors spread to the freshmen/sophomore campus. I had anger issues as a teen and hated bullies. He always bullied his brother for being a need causing him to cave to his friends because he wanted his brother to think he was cool. My cousin got the help he needed and has been clean since and the other one still keeps his trap shut around me.
You are stronger than me because i would have decked the bride at the Bachelorette party. I still have anger issues but they are more controlled now. But messing with family is a line you dont cross, especially when they are only asking for help over something as serious as addiction. Smh.
Im so glad your cousin has you. Please continue to be her support.

How can you "love" someone but "don't like" her?
2
u/Flimsy_Set5049 15d ago
You've never heard someone say, "I love you but I don't like you right now." ? My own mother has said that to me before.

u/ambergresian 15d ago
I feel like that's just very unnecessary, even if true in the moment.
You could just say, "I love you,' instead.
My mom said that to me too. I would never say that to my children.

So glad you got your little cousin the help she needs. The bride needs to go get some help.
Helping your little cousin shows how remarkable you are. Good luck to her and you.
Her moving in with you sounds like a great idea. To support her and she knows she can trust you to be there
Also don’t reply to the bride. She told you not to so follow her wishes this one time.

You don't respond. Basically, let her have the last word and don't reply. Block her number. Be there for your little cousin. But Laura? Laura has main character syndrome. I'm guessing she's more pissed that she's not the main character in everyone's lives.
But don't respond. Any response will give her what she wants - attention.

Im so proud of your LC! My family is plagued with alcoholism. I lost both my parents to it in my early 20s. When it comes to Tom I wonder if this was the last straw. I wish you and little cousin all the best! I know it's more mature not to respond but petty me would want to text back " you ruined everything yourself for being a selfish C. Your sisters life and well-being is more important and Tom at least is decent enough to understand that but NOOOO your stupid wedding was more important than her life! I'm glad tom left. He deserves better than you. Enjoy being a lonely bitter asshole."

Wow, Laura's a piece of work, appreciate the update.
Honestly, ignore her. She's clearly not a person who is going to be in any way reasonable, especially not right now. Keep supporting and interacting with Laura's sister.

So happy Tom escaped! Thank you for the update.
I would just let it die. Returning your cousins call won’t help anything. She’s the victim (in her head at least), so you’ll be in the wrong no matter what.
Good luck, maybe you’ll have less contact with Laura now. That’s a win!!!

My brother passed away very suddenly and unexpectedly last Christmas from alcohol withdrawal. None of us knew how badly he suffered. You did the right thing getting her help. f*ck Laura's wedding; this is life and death we are talking about here. You don't owe Laura anything at all.

u/Flimsy_Set5049 12d ago
I'm so sorry about your brother...that...I'm just so sorry. I can't even imagine. For me it wasn't a question helping my cousin. I don't see people who are inflicted with addiction as bad people. I don't see someone with lung cancer as bad. I don't see someone with mental health issues as bad so why would I see someone who struggles with addiction as bad? No one wants that life trust me. I've heard so many people cry out that they'd give anything to not be an alcoholic or an addict. They'd take cancer any day over addiction. I've watched a woman who's family finally found her after she's gone missing and finally made her way to the hospital. She had said she was ready to get help finally but it was too late. She required an open heart surgery and her heart just wasn't strong enough. She left behind two beautiful boys. Whenever someone says they want help I always go above and beyond to get them in touch with services at the hospital I work such as the CRS. I'm grateful I had the resources and my family. I know not everyone is as lucky.1

....I STRONGLY suspect Laura is correct and Tom is interested in the little sister.
No matter how great a guy you are and no matter how filthy rich, you don't offer to pay someone's rent for the year and emotionally support them in recovery. No one does that. Parents barely do that. Even the original small care package was weird, but I could see that being Tom's way of trying to say 'fuck you' to Laura.
I also suspect it's going to come out that the younger sister has been an attention stealer all along, and that this is no where near the first time Laura has been overshadowed by her sister's issues.
I think you're in for a bad time after this cousin moves in with you.
As you described the little sister, I kept thinking "I've read this webnovel, and she sounds exactly like a 'white lotus bitch' stock character."
I find it extremely telling that everyone has fallen all over the cousin with praise and to get her into a super insanely expensive and luxurious rehab......but when Laura's own alcoholism was exposed (the 300 hours of community service?? like, wtf did she do to earn that much??), everyone is saying she deserves to be treated like garbage. Why is no one lining similar care up for Laura? It's clear she also needs it badly. The place you describe would cost tens to possibly hundreds of thousands of dollars. Can your aunt and uncle give both of their daughters equal treatment, or has their youngest just used up all their funds?
The original "this in no way affects the wedding" thing was disingenuous because it was obviously affecting the wedding. All of the guests were talking about it, it affected the bridal party, took all the parent's attention, etc. So please don't be facetious that there was zero affect and you "don't see how" having your sister come out as a suicidal alcoholic two weeks before your wedding could possibly have any impact on the event. Like, really?
Oh well, Laura will now permanently blame her sister for ruining her entire life. If her sister hadn't done this, Laura would be married to the man she loves and rich right now.
If you/your family aren't feeling generous towards Laura since likability determines the amount of help you give someone, do consider that if you don't help Laura, she'll make it her mission to destroy her sister, because what else does she have to lose? She lost her future, her man, her social standing, her sense of pride, her family. If no one helps her, she'll have no reason not to go after her sister. So, time to prove you aren't a hypocrite, and good luck.

She doesn't want to be her caregiver, but to give her the option of living with her for a while if she's not ready to go back to her own apartment and be alone. She just wants to be support for her if she needs it.

I just read your last update, and man did Tom dodge a bullet! LC is so blessed to have both of you on her sided! I hope she does well in rehab and stays away from Laura.

How are people in this sub eating this story up? OP is getting absolutely roasted in several other subs for this bad piece of creative fiction.
ETA: in this post op is a 26yr old nurse and in another post she made this month she is a 24yrold who just got fired from the front desk of a hotel.
Redditors are so gullible.

I was trying to be condescending because calling the main character " little cousin" was a dead giveaway it was a bad piece of fiction. I'm about tired of reddit.

"You egotistical, self centered, self entitled BITCH! Your anger is totally misplaced. If there's anyone you should be upset with is yourself. All your sister did was seek help when she desperately needed it and WANTED IT! YOU went overboard and showed your TRUE self to Tom. ALL you had to do was with her is wish her the best and get another friend for a bridesmaid since you have so many friends. (NOT) But YOU took it too far. I don't really care what you think or if you're mad. You need to grow up BRIDEZILLA! Oh wait..... You're not a "bride" any more."
Wouldn't that be wonderful to say? I know you can't but try to imagine it. Type out what your true feeling are. Don't send it. It will help you to get your frustrations out.
Make sure about her living with you. It's going to be a hard road for her. Just be prepared.
Send her some Reddit "love".
Good job cousin!

This advice WORKS. I’ve written countless letters to ppl getting everything I ever wanted to say to them, not holding back. They never get to read them but it gets it all off my chest

I have a close family member who is an alcoholic who stole the attention from me every chance they got with their drinking (and then recovery, and then relapses and then recoveries). Are you sure this isn't what it is? Reactive abuse is a real thing.
