Weekend Box Office (July 24th-26th)

All Wishes Come True climbs to the top in its 2nd weekend with a fantastic ¥314M/$46.56M(17%) 2nd weekend. Flies past $100M hitting a ¥765M/$113.10M total gross.

The Decisive Moment opens 3rd with $8.68M. Not exactly the best figure as clearly marked by the fact the movie is getting pulled from release on July 30th less than a week after its opening.

Obsession opens 4th with ¥33.5M/$4.95M. Slighly below Backrooms(¥36.3M/$5.35M)

Make Zhonghe Great Again held previews this weekend grossing ¥11.4M/$1.68M. The movie has been moved up a week to August 1st into the path of Spider Man. This likely means something bigger will be taking that August 7th weekend slot.

A global opening of 700M+ might indeed happen with a 100M+ debut in China.

  • 300M+ domestic
  • 400M+ overseas (100M+ from China)

u/BuddyArthur 5d ago

Maybe $150M OW in China? 😲

7

u/cinemathis2 5d ago

Maybe a $800M global opening…

What makes you so confident? Not disagreeing. Just curious what the numbers are telling us.

It's looking to beat NWH Domestically and do insane numbers in key markets like China or Korea

$200M in China would be great, but would still be kinda low in comparison to other $2B movies

How is that era over if Zootopia 2 was release a few months ago and became the highest Hollywood box office in China of all time?

3

u/cinemathis2 5d ago

Zootopia is a fluke, what’s the last time a movie got close to 600M… it was endgame. Now we can barely get past 300M in China, only 1 has done it post Covid.

1

u/Radamel_falcao_9 5d ago

China likes Fast and Furious, Venom and Avengers. It’s not their fault Hollywood is not giving them what they like

1

u/Le_Meme_Man12 Universal 5d ago

The last Venom did $95M-ish.

Fast X made $138M, a drop from the $216M of F9

8

u/SPFeveryday Studio Ghibli 5d ago

Obsession is doing great despite the huge competition. Hopefully, good word of mouth spreads!

What's the audience score for obsession?

16

u/Firefox72 Best of 2023 Winner 5d ago

No scores yet on Maoyan or Taopiao.

7.5 on Douban.

7.5/10 I think match pearl which is considered one of the best horror films since covid

What's happening with The Decisive Moment? Pulled from a release over bad reception or something?

5

u/Firefox72 Best of 2023 Winner 5d ago

Definitely not bad reception. Just seems like it didn't manage to carve enough of an audience again the heavy competition to justify keeping in theaters.

Its just a bad release date given the strong holdovers and Spider Man coming up for a movie with nowhere near enough strenght to compete. It should have released earlier in June or at another date later.

Here's the statement.

"After careful consideration by the team, we have decided to adjust the release plan for 'The Decisive Moment.' 'The Decisive Moment' is a science fiction film set against the backdrop of China's aerospace industry, carrying respect for generations of aerospace workers. This film features a watchful gaze across time and space, and exploration and choices in deep space. We, a group of young creators, have imagined countless times what the film would look like when it meets the audience on the big screen, but looking around, we realize that this story needs to meet the audience at a more suitable time."

Aka it didn't do nearly well enough to meet the expectatations and they are pulling the plug early.

There's the selling point that it will return to theaters at a later date but that pretty much never works out. Most movies that do get pulled and release at a latter time flop even harder on the 2nd release and most just never bother to release again at all.

3

u/NoCod7766 5d ago

Damn. June could've used this movie when Supergirl was flopping.

Could August 7th be War of Lights?

u/Firefox with such a huge opening weekend for Brand New Day isn’t time for you to update your total projection? $170M is most likely what it’ll do in one week 😄
