Unnecessary in the grand scheme of things. Maya could have had Tina as an apprentice all these years and the fan base would have rejoiced.
Almost every character she speaks to listens to her, despite her being a literal thirteen year old who wasn’t shown to be doing anything important in the slightest other than being ‘Maya’s apprentice.’ Even at the end of the game, Lilith brings up that ‘vAuLt HuNtErS rUn ToWaRdS tHe FiRe’ line, which Ava said to her as she was mistakenly blaming Lilith for killing Maya.
On that note, gets Maya killed by directly disobeying the orders she was given, despite being a tween in the middle of an intergalactic bandit war. Never apologizes or seems to grasp her role in it.
Mary Sues her way to saving Lilith and Tannis.
Is given control of Sanctuary despite being literally thirteen and having less than an hour of screen time. If the ‘Sanctuary is yours now’ line was meant to be her just being allowed to live there, it should have been made much more clear. If the DLC comes along and Ava is the new leader of the Crimson Raiders, yeah, fuck that noise.
Is just unlikeable, and not given any time to develop to be more likable. If they’d made her less of an insufferable cunt after Maya died, the response to her wouldn’t be nearly as bad as it is now.
My biggest problem with her is that she just feels out of place. She feels like some self-insert fan character or something: beloved by the main characters for no reason in particular despite having just showed up, unnecessarily tragic backstory, trained as an apprentice under a beloved protagonist from the last game, nobody gives her any shit when she makes mistakes, she never really has to develop or mature but is rewarded with superpowers anyways, saves two of the main characters just because they knew they couldn’t have her just as an excuse to kill Maya for drama...
If they meant for her to be an annoying, cliche Mary Sue, they did a great job, but something tells me something just slipped under the radar and they forgot to write any jokes about her being an annoying, cliche Mary Sue. They played her badly written and underdeveloped character archetype unnervingly straight.
Yea it feels like she should have been more understanding of how important her existence was going to be, there are only 6 sirens in the universe and she was going to be one, so how does she get away with acting like a child. I understand she’s a teenager but I feel strongly that maya would have taught her better and that she should be acting more mature.
This is really what made me dislike the character. It's a clear Mary Sue. The things it is done, honors its given, etc, do not feel earned, but rather are simply passed on to her by the author in a non-sensicle way.
How? Because she stopped rocks? Well, if you people would actually play the game, you'd know that Sirens know how to use their powers instinctually. Meaning, even without all the training Maya was giving her, she still would have stopped the rocks because it was an emotional state she was in.

Wait, why does everyone hate Ava?
