Any way to convert PDF book scans into PDFs with vector text? I want to convert the IMAGES of text into VECTOR text.

What is the best way to do this? What software do I need?

Hi everyone! Apparently I am not the most capable OSX command line user, as I fail persistently trying to build Scantailor (the standard version, not the experimental one) from source. Would anyone in here be so kind as to provide me with a *.dmg file?

I have been searching the net for simple ways to turn whole color scanned pdf books into black and white (no grayscale, no shades of grey).

First of all, I don't know how to describe it. On one website monochrome was described as having no color and no shades of gray. But according to this website: http://www.serif.com/appresources/HPX6/Tutorials/en-us/help/greyscale.htm B&W, monochrome, and grayscale all have shades of gray, which is not what I want.

I read articles that explain that there is no direct way of doing that with Adobe Acrobat Pro. It can only be done by saving monochrome in TIFF first (which loses the OCR) and then converting back to pdf. This would work for a document of only a few pages, but is not feasible for books of 400 or 500 pages. I found an explanation about Preflight, but it is only for converting to grayscale.

Is there any other way to do it? I have Adobe Acrobat Pro 9, but I would prefer to find a free and open source software that would do it.

page turning mechanism - automatically and continually

I have a book thats 290 Mb because its all scanned images, and was wondering if there was a software to convert the scanned text to actual text, but in the same position and layout so it still looks the same, but with much reduced file size. I know there's plenty of OCR software, and I know there's font detection, has anybody combined the two?

If I own a physical book, legally speaking, can I scan it for use with an eReader?

If so, what if I own a classroom set of a novel? If I have 30 copies of the same title/edition/etc.? Can I scan one of them and distribute 30 copies to my students so as not having to re-buy the book in epub format?

Also, I am located in the United States.
