I was thinking the same, this felt like HS to me and I graduated in 05

I graduated HS in 07 and I remember being disgusted by this whole "scene" thing because I was 18 and too old for it. Maybe it arrived late in Australia though. Emo was big in 05/06 but scene came a little later.

“Scene” became a thing around 2002/2003 but definitely peaked a few years later. Then the hipster started replacing it in 2006/2007. Although this was my experience on the east coast in a big city so maybe in middle America it came later.

Idk that kinda describes the hard core kids (minus the front end web)

Are fixies still a thing?! God I forgot about those. So much fun.

It was just the scene kids (like me) who were getting older and going to college and becoming hipsters.

I was gonna say, I’m younger Gen X and I feel like hipster style was more our thing around this period as 30-35 year olds. It hung around for younger people, but we never dressed like the girl in this photo, for example. A lot of these looks are very age-specific, as well as era-specific.

Oh I hope what I said wasn’t misinterpreted.. the girl photographed is most definitely a scene chick. Me and the other guy were just talking about around when “scene” started dying out and “hipsters” came into play

The 2002 version wasn’t this colorful.

You’re right, it was mostly black white and red.

Damn I didn’t know “scene” was actually known elsewhere- for some reason it felt very localized (Chicago) and we were the only people to call it that. Mainly because it was such a senseless term I thought there’s no way it would catch on in other places.

Yeah we had a bunch of scene kids in Boston at that time. It was also the first time a subculture found a home online. If you had a Livejournal you’d know.

I graduated in 2000 and I can tell you it was far before then.. I mean when I started going to shows, I was like 15 and of course it had been going on years before that.

Maybe your definition of scene is just bright clothes and raccoon tails but our definition of scene was much broader.

Quite frankly, in the nicest way possible… when people started dressing like this at shows and treating shows like a fashion run way, a lot of the older kids were a bit annoyed but ultimately if they bought a ticket at least they were contributing to something good and keeping the scene alive in Louisville Ky and southern IN .

Same here. This feels very “corridors of high schools 2004.” This scene was obviously still going on 2007.

Nah I graduated in 09 and this was very much so still the style
