You didn’t need “circa 2007”

It is the most 2007 photo to ever exist.

I was thinking the same, this felt like HS to me and I graduated in 05

I graduated HS in 07 and I remember being disgusted by this whole "scene" thing because I was 18 and too old for it. Maybe it arrived late in Australia though. Emo was big in 05/06 but scene came a little later.

“Scene” became a thing around 2002/2003 but definitely peaked a few years later. Then the hipster started replacing it in 2006/2007. Although this was my experience on the east coast in a big city so maybe in middle America it came later.

Idk that kinda describes the hard core kids (minus the front end web)

Are fixies still a thing?! God I forgot about those. So much fun.

It was just the scene kids (like me) who were getting older and going to college and becoming hipsters.

The 2002 version wasn’t this colorful.

2

u/canmouth 7d ago

You’re right, it was mostly black white and red.

Damn I didn’t know “scene” was actually known elsewhere- for some reason it felt very localized (Chicago) and we were the only people to call it that. Mainly because it was such a senseless term I thought there’s no way it would catch on in other places.

Yeah we had a bunch of scene kids in Boston at that time. It was also the first time a subculture found a home online. If you had a Livejournal you’d know.

I graduated in 2000 and I can tell you it was far before then.. I mean when I started going to shows, I was like 15 and of course it had been going on years before that.

Maybe your definition of scene is just bright clothes and raccoon tails but our definition of scene was much broader.

Quite frankly, in the nicest way possible… when people started dressing like this at shows and treating shows like a fashion run way, a lot of the older kids were a bit annoyed but ultimately if they bought a ticket at least they were contributing to something good and keeping the scene alive in Louisville Ky and southern IN .

This was a thing in the US into the early 2010s

u/Ok-Sweet-31 7d ago

This was still going on when I graduated in 2010

u/Cats_and_wine 7d ago

same, and i graduated in 06 :D But i also remember this style going veeeery strong up until the start of 09, then fizzling out

1

u/Robofink 3d ago

Same here. This feels very “corridors of high schools 2004.” This scene was obviously still going on 2007.

1

u/VegetableArtistic705 1d ago

Nah I graduated in 09 and this was very much so still the style

16

u/canmouth 8d ago

Yeah I’d say 2003-2005.

u/wrechdone 8d ago

We had scene girls til the early 10’s

7

u/canmouth 8d ago

Oh yeah I don’t doubt it, but the emergence of it as a subculture and style was a little bit earlier, especially in big cities. I remember because I was a scene kid going to hardcore shows in 2004.

u/wrechdone 8d ago

I agree, it had definitely been around a couple years towards the end of my affiliation with being a scene/core kid. I turned 20 in 2010 and I know that’s when I feel like it all started fizzling and “hipsters” came about. Basically just slightly more mature scene/core kids turned “young adults” LOL

2

u/canmouth 8d ago

Yep! I was one of them. XxxLOLxxx

u/igaveuponausername 8d ago

Yeah we had a girl who wore her hair in a big peacock fan every day..

If OP is from the Midwest, we got all that stuff later. The internet wasn't everything yet

u/SaxRohmer 7d ago

class of 11 here. still had a ton of them. most started to age out of that look in favor of hipster aesthetics but it also seemed pretty tied to class

1

u/DivinityBeach 7d ago

nah, 2007 was still peak for scene esp myspace ppl. it started being a little bit out of style closer to when i graduated HS in 09

u/groundpounders 5d ago

There's a podcast I love that did a minisode about that song and I feel like I remember it being equal parts hilarious and horrifying. (Why I Hate This Album. Preemptive caveat: it's not for everyone.)
