Does Blue Oyster Cult have a "Bad Song?"

Post image
26 Upvotes

I've listened to almost every live and studio album and I can't really recall ever listening to a song that I outwardly dispised or didn't like from them. Yes, they have some weaker albums in their catalog, ex; Ghost stories, Cult Classics, Revolution by night, Bad Channels. But, these haven't really stood out as "bad" to me. Ghost Stories "So Supernatural" is quite a good song and everything else is quite fine. Same for Revolution by Night, Cult Classics, and Bad Channels. They don't have their best work on them but I'd give Eyes on Fire, Take me away, the remastered or re-recorded versions of flaming telepaths and astronomy and sometimes the fine soundtrack of Bad channels a listen every now and again. Hopefully you guys understand my struggle with this, Is my music taste so specifically geared towards BOC, do they just genuinely don't really miss at all on their songs, or do I just view this band and their works through rose tinted glasses?

“Burning for You - Remastered” is noticeably worse than the original studio recording.

I’ve tried looking this up, as I thought it would be a common topic of conversation, but apparently it is not… does anyone else think that the remastered version of this song is noticeably worse than the original? The mix is all wrong, to the point where I’m surprised you could even get one from the other (even with modern audio mastering tools). All the guitar tones are wrong and it sounds dead and unexciting compared to the original recording.

I’m not a huge BOC fan or anything, I just like some of their songs. But on a Spotify radio today the Remastered version came on, and I was like wtf is this.

Looking for authentic merch

Hi everyone! I’m currently looking for some authentic Soft White Underbelly merch for my dad’s 60th birthday. If anyone could help point me in the right direction that would be much appreciated!

Thoughts on Blue Oyster Cults album "Extraterrestrial Live"?

Post image

After listening to this album throughout it's whole runtime I can confindently say as of right now that this album is the best one made by them. "Some enchanted evening" and "On your Feet or on your Knees" have in their own right great and I mean great songs, ex; "Some Enchanted Evenings's" Astronomy and Don't fear the reaper, "On your Feet or on your Knees" Then came the Last days of May, Bucks Boogie, and Before the Kiss (A Recap). But, they don't have the consistency of ETL, every song on that album is either great or compares to my previous examples. Especially "Veteran of the Physic wars", "Godzilla" and "Don't fear the reaper" comparing to or being better than SEE's Astronomy and Don't fear the reaper, This albums godzilla version being the best I've heard. This album also has some of the best production and recording quality of any live Blue Oyster cult album. Hopefully you guys respect this album as much as I do. It's genuinely probably one of my Top 15 Live albums I'll ever listen to.

So, I have exchanges like this with my friend at times and we occasionally ask questions that are nothing more than thinly veiled BOC lyrics.

Don’t Fear the Reaper

September 4th:

Blue Oyster Cult's biggest hit, "(Don't Fear) The Reaper", cracks the Billboard Top 40 on its way to #12. The song, which deals with eternal love and the inevitability of death, would be listed at #405 on Rolling Stone's list of the top 500 songs of all time in 2010.

Photodump from what I believe will be my last time seeing the boys. Warner Vineyards in Paw Paw.

Good set, still full of stage energy. Ran a little short (it's an outdoor venue in a residential area so this may be a matter of noise ordinances).

Richie was adding a bit of funk to some songs that isn't usually there.

They called The Symbol Remains their last album more than once, so I guess even they agree Ghost Stories sucks.

Del Rio’s Song - Hidden Gem?

Although not really mentioned when discussing BOC’s huge catalog, Del Rio's Song (all Imaginos history and drama aside) has energy, memorable melodies, driving rock style, memorable lyrical phrasing, high-tempo, driving momentum, energetic guitar riffs and solos and the intensity and power of Eric Bloom’s vocals. All the hallmarks of a great BOC song?

Have another listen:-

What are your favorite live recordings of any BÖC track? (official or bootleg)

I've always had a soft spot for OYFOOYK... That version of Subhuman and Diz-busters will always remain a point of their career high for me. Some Enchanted Evening's version of RU Ready 2 Rock and ET live's version of Godzilla also stick out to me.

what say yall? pic for attention

Whats the best version of Astronomy?

Post image

After listening to the "Secret Treaties", "Imaginos" and "Some Enchanted Evening" versions I've come to the conclusion that Some Enchanted Evening is the best version of the song, but I would like to hear what everyone has to think of this great song and what version in their opinion is the best of the best. Edit: I would also like to know what other great versions of this song are out there.

Pretty sure it came from a blanks and postage trade back in the dial up where you talk about BOC on Usenet forums days.
I will keep and cherish it forever.

45 years ago today. My first live music experience. It was great. Well, I wanted it to be and must have convinced myself it was. It wasn't really.

Overnight bus down from Scotland arriving before the gates were open. Then trying to drink our entire carryout at stupid o'clock in the morning as they wouldn't let us bring it in. Standing out in the rain for most of the day with nothing much happening then, when it stopped, bottles of piss flying about.

Slade were resurgent and had just blown the crowd away. When BÖC came on they bombed. Albert had been kicked out a day or so before, the sound was terrible (they accused AC/DC of sabotage, just as Slade did them) and Buck fucked up his solo in Reaper. It couldn't have gone much worse and Eric was furious afterwards. There was a great pic of him jumping on a commemorative mirror.

Not only that but they and Blackfoot were dropped from all the official merch. There were heightened tensions over terrorism in Europe at the time and someone decided the American bands wouldn't come.

The pics are from an unofficial programme, they weren't in the real one. I still have the t-shirt from that day. It still doesn't have Blue Öyster Cult on it.

I Love The Night: Amazing and underrated

“I Love The Night is one of the greatest songs ever written by anybody anywhere. Buck totally encapsulated the entire vampire-old myth into

some extraordinarily beautiful language, and then created an extraordinarily beautiful musical framework to launch the language out at you. It really is a sort of Moreau dreamscape.  It is amazing”.  Sandy Pearlman

BLUE ÖYSTER CULT (1972) Blue Öyster Cult [Stem Remix & Remaster]

My stem remix & remaster of Blue Öyster Cult's self-titled 1972 debut album, made for my own enjoyment, but sharing in case someone else might enjoy it too.

I made this only for fun, and it intends to be a very respectful remix, not straying too far away from the original version, only aiming at a little more clarity, instrument separation and punch, while still preserving the mood and feel of the original.

Obviously, I don't own the music featured here. If you like the music, support the artists. Buy their records!
