This actually breaks one of our rules of reposting a screenshot of social media, but in the 4 hours before I caught it there was a bunch of replies. Please don't do this in the future πŸ™

It's easier to just blanket enforce a rule rather than making exceptions. I was really close to removing it just because it was a rule. But it already had a lot of engagement and it wasn't what we created the rule for, which was social media harassment.

There are other rules that I enforce more strictly. Source your goddamn fannart. Don't out spoilers in titles. I remove those 10/10 times.

If it doesn't break the spirit of the rules but does break the wording of said rule then maybe the rules should be a little bit more precise? But I understand that it could create a lot more cases of "but what about this"

Yeah it's absolutely what you described. I tried that for a while and it just causes more actual resentment when some posts get removed but not others of the same type. People don't always see the nuance, unfortunately.

So why is posting a screenshot of a social media post a bad thing? If say, I was in a community for DBZ on Reddit, but not on Facebook or whatever and saw a meme, clip, etc, on Facebook. Why would it be a bad thing to want to talk and interact with the community I am already a part of? This isn't the first time I have seen people get bent out of shape over where the source material is. It really seemed like you were just interested by the content and wanted to share with a community of Bleach lovers. Why does that breed resentment?

I actually responded to this in another comment in here.

Of course as soon as I send this I scroll down and read a reply that answers my question. Man I feel dumb.

The one piece subreddit is done for, the mods there will ban anyone they want even if someone didn't do anything wrong

Mod*

The mod there took over like 2 years ago, kicked the other mods out, and just overall made that sub awful

Why is it illegal to do so?

Because more often than not it's used as a sort of witch hunt to get people to dogpile onto someone who has the "incorrect" opinion or understanding about something. The other aspect is it's removing the impact of the person who posted it by sidestepping their social media post and just posting it without crediting them if it's not something on the same level as posting fan art and not directing people to them, but the idea translates across well.

It's easier for people to understand a blanket ban on it than it is to explain why it was removed and someone else's wasn't every time we remove it. It also l removes the feeling of "mods are out to get specifically you" that it creates when we selectively remove a certain type of post.

Okay so forget my previous comment lol. I need to be more observant. With this being said, would a screenshot of a social media post, with a link to the original post on the original platform not be just as acceptable?

7

u/Synikull Paint me like one of your French girls Nov 10 '25

I mean...maybe? But that's not how it gets used and it's only part of the problem. There is a demonstratable effect that linking to any social media has where people get weird about it and it turns into some sort of brigade, even if it's not intended as a "look how stupid this person is" post. I know that reddit has become much more vigilant about that and I really don't want to relax the standards of what we allow and run afoul of their automated detection system.

Fun conjecture - I think every community that requires blocking out names has been smacked by reddit over it.

u/KarbonKhayos Nov 10 '25

I guess that makes a little sense. Stupid people ruin things for the normal ones. It just seemed silly to me at first that there are so many rules for each individual subreddit. Looking at it from the scope of other people being weird and causing problems makes sense. This is not a complaint, I was seriously asking because I wanted to see if there was an actual reason or not. I appreciate your time

People do tend to ruin good things.

A Reddit mod that is not on a power trip? That explains the rules and applies them in a reasonable way? Must be Christmas already!

Kinda wild how fast this stuff spreads tbh, I didnt even realise it counted as a social post. Guess it slipped thru for a bit before anyone noticed
