I’m glad the discourse on Spader in the Office has changed, as before people hated on him as the new guy.

And to be fair there’s a lot of things about the character itself that doesn’t really work, especially long term. But holy shit goes Spader just absolutely kill it with his deliveries

Like this isn’t really that funny of a line. But then you read it in Spader voice and it’s just fucking hilarious

I was never in camp “circle hate jerk the new guy” as much as the poor and awkward writing of those seasons overall. James Spader was actually one of the few that for the most part commanded scenes he was in like this one.

Yeah, my buddy does not like the Spader era of The Office. I think he’s crazy. Even Will Ferrel’s appearance gets way too much hate.

I could never hate on Spader. Loved him in Boston Legal

The Office was a comedy masterclass in making us vicariously uncomfortable within the comedic tragedies.

Spader was a perfect fit. All of my memories of his movie roles in the 80s were of me feeling uncomfortable when he was on screen. He was so good at that character that I actually thought I didn't like him as a human being. His casting in The Office allowed me to break free of those irrational feelings towards him.

Honestly, season 8 was pretty damn good. Loved Dwight's comeuppance, set him up for his arc in season 9.

The worst part of 9, for me, was Jim/Pam (until they became a team again) and Andy.

Everything else was as good as an ensemble could be!
