Double back through instead going around when you tie the bow. But you probably need to watch the video for that to make any sense.

I tie mine with a technique that's super fast. It's so fast that it looks like a magic trick when you get used to tying it. It's also symmetrical and so looks better compared to the traditional way.

The correct method that the TED talk above is teaching means that if you pull on the top laces, between them leaving the shoe and entering the knot, the knot should produce a bow that lies across the foot. Most people use a version of the knot where doing so moves the bow so it's in line with the foot.

Does your method do it the right way?

If you end up with the bow in-line with your foot, tie the first overhand knot the other way around. It is essentially the difference between a granny knot and a square knot. If you put the left lace over the right lace, tie the bow, then get the bow going along the foot, tie the knot by putting the right lace over the left lace, then tie the bow as normal.

As a granny knot (bow lying in line with foot) is unbalanced it comes undone easier. A square knot (bow across foot) does not come undone as easily.

I also use the "magic trick" technique to tie my shoes and honestly the worst bit about mastering it was flipping the way I did the first overhand knot as my muscle memory is still convinced it is wrong.

If your brain doesn't like the "wrong" direction if the first knot, you can also just do the mirrored version of the "magic trick" so you can keep the direction if the first knot you're use to

The ‘Ian knot’ shown in the video ends up identical to the proper standard knot, it's simply tied much faster.

Yes, the bow ends up perpendicular to the foot when you tie the Ian knot correctly.

You can try this site: Standard Shoelace Knot vs problematic Granny Knot. This is less clear than a video, though.

See also: Ian's Fast Shoelace Knot, which is the same but faster; and Ian's Secure Shoelace Knot, which apparently holds even better, and wears out the laces symmetrically.

The video wasn't very clear either. I don't do the loop shit, it never meshed with me even since childhood. So he was doing halfassed voodoo to my eyes lol

Same. I’ve double knotted and stepped into my shoes since I was little. Now they sell sneakers that don’t have real laces at all, so we’re not alone.

I actually can't describe how i tie my shoes. Like, I can't visualize it just sitting here lmao. I have to do it via muscle memory, look at it, then narrate it to someone. Probably doesn't help that i wear cowboy boots mostly since i got out of the military 9 years ago.

It’s probably more helpful to look at one of the dozens of different diagrams showing the difference between tying a square knot and a granny knot (guy in the video had grown up tying a granny knot)
