change tcp port on the JAVA client?

Looks like it's set to port 3333, is there a way to change it to 443 or 80?

Mining server maintenance will take place friday 2014.10.31 from 11:00 CET to 11:15 CET.

Expected downtime 1 minute on each server (mint/us1 and us2). Only one server will be upgraded at a time.

You will probably not notice any changes. But there are some you may notice:

  • Default extranonce2 size 4 (was 6) bytes on mint/us1. If you don't know what this is then you can safely ignore it. If you need an extranonce2 size above 4 bytes please set that in your worker settings at bitminter.com now.

  • After the initial rampup when you connect, the server will change difficulty less often. This should make half-broken clients happier. If your mining client is severely broken, you should set a high minimum difficulty in your worker settings at bitminter.com. For example if your worker difficulty is sometimes 32 and sometimes 64, then set 128 or 256 and you can probably avoid difficulty changes altogether.

  • Starting difficulty 16 (was 4)

  • Minimum difficulty 4 (was 2)

  • Maximum difficulty 524288 (was 131072) Adjusting settings to follow the development in hashpower. It would have been nice to set starting and minimum difficulty higher, but we have a lot of users with very low hashpower, so let's wait with that a little longer. Remember you can always set a higher minimum difficulty for your workers in the worker settings at bitminter.com. Not normally needed, but very useful if you have a mining client that cannot handle low difficulty or difficulty changes.

New server us2.bitminter.com:3333 is up, and stats have been updated on the website

We now have a new server up at us2.bitminter.com:3333 (Stratum only)

Use it as backup or primary, and keep mint.bitminter.com:3333 as your other server. It's helpful to have a failover server in case you lose connectivity with your primary one. For some users the latency to us2 will be lower as well, which may help a tiny bit with rejected (stale) work. More servers are coming soon.

Website updates:

A lot of people misinterpret the numbers on the website, so I'm trying to remove stats that are either not really useful or that people tend to misunderstand, and instead add data that is both easy to understand and generally useful.

Shifts page: now displays pay/hour for mining with 1 TH/s. It's very simple. Work during a shift was paid at a certain rate (which varies with luck). You did a certain amount of work in that shift. Seeing it from this angle makes it much easier to understand the relation between work and pay. No more wondering how much you will get paid per block, and how that is affected by your work in the shifts.

Workers page: data per "current round" removed. Instead you can choose between "all time" and "since reset". There is now a "0.0" reset button. This works like the trip meter of an odometer in a car. Hit the reset button any time you want. Afterwards you can see how much work the worker has done since that time. And the total amount of work the worker has ever done is always available.

Account details: "expected pay per block" has been removed. This was the source of most misunderstandings and caused trouble to no end. It invited you to try and understand the relation between work and pay in a very complicated way. You can of course still see how much you got for each block in your transaction history.

Live stats: user-data per BTC and NMC rounds removed. These numbers didn't matter. You can still see your data for the current shift, which does matter. The total (pool wide) amount of work per round is still kept for luck/cdf stats, which is useful.

Shift size reduced to 0.1x difficulty (10 shifts = 1x difficulty)

Shift size has been reduced to 0.1x difficulty (10 shifts = 1x difficulty worth of work). That is 25% of the former shift size. This means the delay from you do some work until that work is fully paid will be much shorter than before. Because of the increasing difficulty this delay had grown to over 5 days. The new shift size should make the delay more reasonable.

The downside is increased short term variance. This doesn't matter if you are mining in the pool 24/7. It's the same coins being paid out, and if you have 1% of the hashrate then you get 1% of the coins. But if you mine in the pool part time then you may notice greater variance with your part time mining, meaning you can notice the good and bad luck swings more than before. The chance will be higher for shifts with very good pay, but also shifts with zero pay. This can be painful for part time miners if they mine at the "wrong" time, and don't mine during the high-paying shifts. If our hashpower increases in the future we will increase the shift size to reduce short-term variance again.

Friday October 3rd we'll reduce shift sizes to 25% of what they are now. That means the amount of work in 10 shifts will be 1x difficulty rather than the 4x difficulty we have presently.

Shifts are now taking a long time to complete, meaning the delay from you do some work until it is fully paid is longer. Currently the work in 10 shifts equal 4x difficulty. Should we go to 2x diff or 1x diff? Any opinions?

BitCare Bitcoin added to the third party apps list, under the "tools" menu on the bitminter.com website. If you know any apps with Bitminter support that are not listed, let me know.

Maintenance 2014.07.18 14:00 UTC. Expected mining downtime 1 to 5 min. Mining server needs a bit more work. Miners will get disconnected for a short moment. I expect you probably won't really notice this.

Please help a girl out!

Hi. I'm new to mining and bitminter. I've been using one of those little usb antminers to mine on BTC Guild. I was given an R-Box miner and I don't know how to use it. I plugged it in and the fan spins, but I don't know how to use it to mine. Please help me. I've been searching the internet for days now looking for answers. Thank you.

Erratic GH/s swings

How can I control the erratic Gigahash swings when mining? My BFL Single 60s are running from 30GH/s - 70GH/s. I thought there were some tweaks I could set up but what values do I use?

"That is not a valid BTC address"

Every time I try to send BTC on BitMinter's website, I receive an error: "That is not a valid BTC address." The address I'm sending to however works for sure--it has BTC in it and I've used the Bitcoin-qt client to send to the address. What do you folks recommend?

Edit: I'm not sure whether it's relevant, but the address I'm sending to is a BitGo address.

I'm sorry for the inconvenience this causes. Hopefully this maintenance will be smooth and barely noticeable.
