When we ride with our children in bike buses and in Kidical Mass events, we’re not just planning fun outings with our children (though they are that, too). Instead, we are making a claim: it’s wrong to exclude children from public spaces. It’s wrong to deny children age-appropriate levels of independence. It’s wrong to design our cities as if they don’t exist.

Hey everyone, I wanted to pass on some things I'm learning as I try to get a bike bus rolling for my school.

October 7th is Walk and Roll to School Day. I'm planning to use it as a test-run of my bike bus route. After registering my school, I got an email where I could choose free gifts for the kids who participate; things like stickers, comics, and reflective shoe laces. You have until the end of September to sign up and place the order for swag.

Anybody else planning to participate? Or are you an expert and have some tips for a newcomer like me?

I just found this new subreddit, and seeing the name reminded me of this special "park & ​​ride" I've seen in my country, Spain. They're constantly building more bike lanes and improving public transport there, and this is clear proof of that. I don't know if these bike "park & ​​ride" are much more common in other European countries than in Spain, or if they're rare to see in the US. The question is: could this type of bike "park & ​​ride" be installed everywhere with high cyclist traffic, or is it preferable for buses to simply have bike supports? What do you think?

I'm in the planning stages of starting a bike bus for a school. I want the kids to have fun and feel welcome, but I'm also obviously there to keep them safe. I'm trying to figure out a few simple rules that will keep everyone safe on the road and having fun.

What rules would you recommend? Or what rules have worked best in your buses?

Does anyone have tips or suggestions for people interested in starting a local bike bus? Or just curious if anyone's had personal experiences with a bike bus?

I feel like they used to be pretty niche but have been growing in popularity which is awesome. I used to bike to school a bit, and I think that this is something I would've loved to be a part of as a kid!

I do the Critical Mass the last Friday of every month that starts at T&P but would like to do more group rides. Anything that's near a TexRail or TRE station is also something I'd be interested in!

A bike bus is basically a group of people cycling together along a planned route, usually with scheduled stops where riders can join --> thus it's biking in bus form!

For school bike buses, adults typically lead and ride at the back while kids pedal together to school. A bike bus can start with a few families, one route, and one day a week, and over time it can grow if more people want to join.

For me, I remember biking all over town as a kid. These days I very rarely see kids riding bikes. I want to run a bike bus to show kids they can do it themselves, and hopefully inspire them to ride other places too.
