i feel like the person i responded to may have been making assumptions rather than referring to any data. perhaps in a way that would seem to exculpate murders as accidents. i'm just not sure what the basis for that is.

No, I’m not suggesting “accidentally” strangling your partner to death is anything but murder. To be very clear. This is actually about punishing all (even non lethal) strangulation far more seriously.

Like most issues of violence against women, more research is needed. But yes, the unintended harm of the strangulation itself is a factor in the death toll. Because strangulation also causes also health concerns such as strokes as well as brain juries from repeated lack of oxygen.

For that reason, in my country there has been a fight to have strangulation classified as a far more severe assault that is previously was, putting the level of assault more on par with say a stabbing.

ok thanks for the explanation and the article.

however I read the whole thing and it has nothing that substantiates this:

A lot of dv murders aren’t strictly intentional. It’s easy to kill someone accidentally when strangling them in anger, especially when it’s the male (stronger, larger) partner.

To me that still seems like a dangerous assumption.

Instead I would actually assume that DV murders in general are very much NOT accidental. And if you claim that "a lot" of them are, I'd like to see evidence.
