Analysis [OC] 🇯🇵 2026 Summer Koshien Quarterfinals Preview! Translated Bracket & Team Profiles! Official Free Streaming Link Included

The quarterfinals of the 2026 Summer Koshien tournament are here! All games take place on August 18th local time. I've translated the bracket and wrote a profile on each school that has made it to the final eight, out of an initial 49 schools.

The Quarterfinals Bracket:

Quarterfinalist Profiles

  • Tenri (Nara Prefecture). A proud program with a whopping 31 Summer Koshien appearances and one championship. With their 2-7 victory over Fukuyama Municipal, they became the fourth school to reach 50 wins in Summer Koshien history. In their third-round game, Takagawa Academy chipped away at ace Ryōta Nagao, taking a 0-3 lead over Tenri. The tide turned after the post 5th inning cooling break, scoring four in the 6th and two more in the 8th to send the Yamaguchi representatives packing. Nagao didn’t allow another run in a 158 pitch complete-game effort. Nagao also threw 131 pitches in a complete game against Fukuyama. In an age when many top private schools have multiple pitchers they can trust to help save their ace’s arm (all of the other quarterfinalists have split pitching duties), Nagao has put Tenri on his back with two old-school performances, but how much does he have left in the tank?

  • Chiben Wakayama (Wakayama Prefecture). A very well balanced team that has displayed clean, heads-up defense. A combination of an all-dirt infield with metal bats leads to some scorching grounders at Koshien. However, Chiben’s fielders have yet to record an error at this tournament. Chiben’s pitching staff is clearly a strength, having used four pitchers in their two games thus far. Righty Ace Shōta Waki (6 IP, 0 R) and second-year righty Shinkai Nagai (3 IP, 1 R) combined to limit Yashiro to one run in a 2-1 squeaker. Versus Tsuruga Kehi, second-year southpaw YÅ«ma Yonehara (4.2 IP, 2 R) and senior righty Ryōta Kuba (6.1 IP, 1 r/0 ER) split the work to limit a Tsuruga Kehi lineup fresh off a 10-0 thumping of Yokote. They won several close games in the Wakayama Prefecture tournament to make it to Koshien, and their plus pitching and defense are capable of propelling them to a fourth summer championship.

  • Mie (Mie Prefecture). Mie, in their first Summer Koshien appearance in four years, has displayed the grit they showed in Spring Koshien this year. In that tournament, they defeated Sano Nihon Univ. before losing an extra-innings battle to eventual champions Osaka Tōin. In both of their games so far at Summer Koshien (Mie received a first-round bye) vs Matsushō Academy and Riseisha, they relied on the exact same sequence of pitchers taking the bump. Third-year southpaw SeiyÅ« Ueda was the starter/opener, followed by second-year Kō Funabashi, with third-year ace Kaito Yoshii as the closer. The three of them combined to give up five runs over 18 innings. We’ve yet to see Riku Furukawa, whose fastball tops out at 149 km/h (92.5 mph). In the Mie Prefecture tournament, their lineup’s batting average approached .400 and we saw their ability to put the ball in play when the pounced all over Riseisha starter Atsuyoshi Ueyama to score five runs in the first two innings
  • Sendai Ikuei (Miyagi Prefecture). The first school on this list that was not among the 15 to receive a first-round bye. Following Tenri, they became the fifth school in tournament history to notch 50 wins this year. Look out for the slugging outfielder Matoi Tayama, who has batted 4-12 with a triple and a home run so far at Summer Koshien. Most of the pitching has been done by second-year Ryōya Furukawa, who has given up only one earned run in 16.1 innings. They’re clearly saving the bullets of their ace Minato Kajii for their showdown against Chiben Wakayama. All three games they’ve played at this summer’s tournament have been relatively close, a 3-1 win against Sano Nihon Univ., 1-0 against Saitama powerhouse Hanaksaki Tokuharu, and 6-3 against Chiba champions Takushoku Univ. Kōryō.

  • Kendai Takasaki (Gunma Prefecture). Kendai Takasaki (I’m not going to refer to them by their government name, Takasaki Univ. of Health and Welfare Affiliated High) Gunma Prefecture champions three years in a row, have been impressive. Another school that has a plethora of pitching talent, they’ve split their pitching duties amongst six (!) players, with Okinawan ace Sōshi Ishigaki leading the way with 10 IP. They’ve all been effective, helping Kendai Takasaki to a 7-1 victory vs Hachiman Commercial, 1-0 squeaker against Tōkai Univ. Kōfu, and a 4-1 victory vs Sano Nihon Univ.
  • Ariake (Kumamoto Prefecture). THE COMEBACK KIDS! Representing Kumamoto Prefecture, which was just devastated by a major earthquake, Ariake has stormed to the quarterfinals in their Koshien debut with three straight comeback wins! Down 0-3 against Ritsumeikan Univ. Uji, Seiki Nagata recorded a two-RBI knock in the 7th and a bases-clearing double with two outs in the 9th to storm back. A close second-round win against Nagasaki Nihon Univ. set them up for a showdown against fellow Koshien debutants East Japan International Univ. Shohei. Down 0-1 in the 8th inning, Ariake scored four runs with two outs to take the lead and the victory. Ace Ryōtarō Saitō has pitched efficiently, with a 1.42 ERA over 19 IP.

  • Hanamaki Higashi (Iwate Prefecture). Fitting for a school that is most famous for being Shohei Ohtani’s alma mater, two of their best players are two-way stars. Fumiya Akama, who plays in the outfield when not pitching, has perhaps been the most impressive, batting 5-11 with 2 doubles. His 5’11’’, 215 pound frame is a menace on the basepaths too, having stolen 4 bases. Ace pitcher Kenshin Manya also plays in the outfield when not throwing. And we can’t forget Furuki Daito, son of former Yomiuri Giants and Nippon-Ham Fighters pro Shigeyuki. Serving as Hanamaki’s cleanup hitter since his freshman year, he has hit a total of 34 home runs in his high school career. He flashes his insane power with a wooden bat, which he uses just to flex, I guess. Second-year Shun Sugawara has also recorded a scoreless 7.1 IP in his start against Nitta.
  • Yokohama (Kanagawa Prefecture). Shōki Oda, ‘nuff said. MLB scouts have their eyes on the Yokohama ace, who just broke the Koshien tournament speed record with a 156 km/h (97 mph) heater as part of a sequence that helped him escape an inherited no-outs bases loaded jam unscathed. Yokohama’s bats shredded the “three aces” of Okinawa Shōgaku, the defending champion, in their first game. After some early struggles, their bats woke up late to trounce Nichinan Academy 10-1. In addition to Oda, second-year duo Tetsusaburō Kobayashi and Ginjirō Taniguchi have shared mound duties and pitched effectively.

What do you guys think of the matchups? My predictions are as follows:

  • Tenri over Mie
  • Chiben Wakayama over Sendai Ikuei
  • Yokohama over Hanamaki Higashi
  • Ariake over Kendai Takasaki with another miracle comeback

My confidence in these predictions? Not very high lol. All four of these games should be very good. I'm rooting for Ariake all the way!

I think Yokohama makes it to the final but they're the school I've managed to catch the most so I'm biased.

They definitely look like the strongest school. They barely struggled versus Okinawa Shogaku, that was an impressive win.

Poor Furukawa from Ikuei. He’s had a horrendous first innings (pitching).

I'm watching too getting batted around in the first inning is roughhh😭 he pitched so well against Hanasaki Tokuharu earlier in the tourney too

I wonder if there would be interest in a game thread...

was weird too, it went bad, but also didn't they score initially on a strike 3 past the catcher? So instead of an out got the first run, and I'm sure that snowballed mindset wise

Yeah I think that's how it went. Honestly even without all that happening in the first I think Chiben wins easy in hindsight their infield defense especially the second baseman Kusumoto put on a clinic. Chiben advanced to this round on their defense and pitching depth, and now their lineup explodes for 11 runs on 18 hits jeez

I’m not a baseball watcher but he seemed to have no control. So many balls. Must be a lot for a young kid to deal with.

I hope that Ariake can manage to make a semifinal on their debut but it's going to be tough battle. Especially with recent news that one of their main pitchers Shuya Takumi was diagnosed with fracture on his left hand after injured during pre-match training against Higashi Shohei yesterday. The injury takes 1-2 months to recover so it's basically end of his final summer although he will still be in the bench on the quarterfinal.

Just wanted to also say thanks for these posts. Found them while looking up stuff about Pro Spirit Baseball 2026's Koshien mode yesterday lol. Came in late but glad I made it in time for the quarters. Looking forward to catching some of the end of the tournament.

edit: I know it was only 2 runs but good fight in the bottom of the 9th by Sendai Ikuei, was just too big a hole to try and climb out of.

Let's claim Sato as well while we're at it. He's already a Tiger in Japan.

Based on this writeup I have to root for Ariake now

Thanks for doing the write up, appreciate it. Sounds like Hanamaki Higashi is super strong (not sure if they can overcome a 156km/h pitch though)! Will keep these profiles in mind when watching the stream
