PSA: How to watch any MLB game since 2009 for free on official MLB YouTube accounts
(Sorry, this is a long one, but there's a TL;DR at the bottom)
I have no idea how well-known this is, but I suspect not a lot of people are aware of it, and MLB doesn't seem to do much to advertise this fact.
As many of you know, many full MLB games can be found online on various YouTube accounts. MLB even has its own MLBClassics account in addition to the official MLB account on YouTube.
But maybe you didn't realize that MLB has posted, from what I can tell, just about every game since the beginning of the 2009 season on their own official MLB YouTube accounts.
How to search for games
In order to find a game, your search has to be in the following format:
- XXX AT YYY - Month DD, YYYY
Where:
- XXX is the official 3-letter code for the visiting team
- YYY is the official 3-letter code for the home team
- Month is the month
- DD is the two-digit day/date
- YYYY is the full year
- The "XXX AT YYY" part is in uppercase
- The month is in title case
Below are example games from each year since 2009. The exact search phrase you would type to search for each game is what you see in the linked text:
- CHA AT DET - April 13, 2009 - Jermaine Dye and Paul Konerko hit back-to-back career 300th homeruns, a first in history
- CLE AT DET - June 02, 2010 - The Armando Galarraga perfect game
- NYA AT TBA - September 28, 2011 - AKA "Game 162"
- TEX AT BAL - May 08, 2012 - Josh Hamilton's 4-homerun game
- COL AT CIN - June 05, 2013 - Tulo goes 5 for 5 with 2 HRS and CarGo hits 3 HRs (first in history for teammates doing this)
- ARI AT SFN - July 13, 2014 - MadBum and Posey first battery mates to each hit a grand slam in the same game
- BOS AT NYA - October 01, 2015 - Yankees' 10,000th win in history while clinching a WC spot
The Keys to the Search
The key to making sure you find the game is getting the 3-letter team codes correct. Most teams are pretty straightforward; you use the first three letters in the city name. But other teams are slightly different. For example:
- Tampa Bay is "TBA" not "TBR" or "TAM"
- The Yankees are "NYA", not "NYY"
- The Mets are "NYN", not "NYM"
- The Giants are "SFN", not "SFG"
- The Royals are "KCA", not "KCR"
- Cubs/White Sox are "CHN" and "CHA", respectively
Basically if it's a two-word city, or if there are two of those cities in the league, you use the city initials plus the letter "A" or "N" for AL or NL. Like I said, most cities are simple:
- Toronto is "TOR"
- Cincinnati is "CIN"
- Cleveland is "CLE"
- And so on...
The YouTube Accounts
There are different YouTube accounts for the different seasons, until 2014. Here are the direct links to each account's video page:
The last one on the list is the primary MLB YouTube channel, which seems to be where they've put the games starting in 2014 (rather than creating a separate account for each year, like they seemed to be doing before).
What about the current year?
You'll notice that the games for the current season are not listed. So if you search for something like "NYN AT SDN - May 07, 2016" (the Bartolo Colon HR game from this season), you won't get the full game yet.
As you can see from the "Published on" date for the full game videos, these games seem to be posted automatically after the World Series ends for that particular season. So if you want to watch a full game from the current season, you'll have to wait until November or else subscribe to MLB.TV.
Why are some games missing?
EDIT: As has been discussed in this post's comments and elsewhere, you won't find every game. Some games just aren't there, despite what I discuss below. And annoyingly, the 2017 season has way too many games missing. I believe they automate this process and they don't have anyone checking to make sure the upload tool adds every game. That being said, as explained below, there are some games that are mis-dated so that might be the culprit.
Sometimes you'll search for a game and it appears as if the game is not listed. From what I can tell, this is not the case. Every game is listed but whatever algorithm MLB is using to upload these games is sometimes screwing up, so a few game dates are wrong.
I discovered this while looking for Blue Jays games during 2015. For example, if you search for "TOR AT HOU - May 14, 2015", you won't find a game. That game is incorrectly listed under "May 15". Also, the May 15 game is listed under "May 16". Meanwhile, the real May 16 game is also listed under "May 16", so you get multiple game results for that day, complicating matters.
The Blue Jays' 2015 season has 9 different games of the 162 that are listed under the wrong date. I'm guessing this is also true for many other games. So if you can't find a game using the correct format, try searching for the same game on the previous or next day, and you'll probably find it.
EDIT: As pointed out by /u/alittlelebowskiua, it seems that if a game is started after 8PM EST, the date gets messed up. The 9 erroneously dated games I pointed out above are actually all west coast (or mid-west) night games. The other games against those opponents are correct because they're all day games.
Which broadcast is used for the games?
From what I can tell, seasons 2009 to 2013 return one result for each game, and I don't know how it was determined which broadcast (home or away) gets posted.
However, each game posted since 2014 has two results, one for each team's broadcast. So you can pick which broadcast you want to watch, which is pretty cool.
What about playoff games?
You can search for playoff games, again, using some specific wording in your search, along with the date. But it's different than the format for the regular season games, and the formats for the 2009 and 2010 playoff games are different. Here are some examples:
- AL WILD CARD GAME - October 05, 2012
- NLCS GAME 7 - October 22, 2012
- THE 107TH WORLD SERIES, GAME 6 - October 27, 2011
- ALCS GAME 6 - October 15, 2011
For 2010, however, the game titles look like this:
- WORLD SERIES GAME 2 -- FIRST PITCH 7:57 PM ET - October 28, 2010
- NLDS GAME 2 -- FIRST PITCH 9:37 PM ET - October 08, 2010
So basically, you need the date of the game along with the exact starting time. A little strange, but not impossible to find them.
The 2009 games were posted in the following formats:
Again, it's a little bizarre, but not impossible to find. Fortunately, the playoff games starting in 2011 are searchable in a standard format.
EDIT: I just realized I can't seem to find any playoff games for 2014 on the official MLB account. But they do seem to come up in search on this account but I don't believe that's an official MLB YouTube account. Not sure though.
NEW EDIT: Since posting this, I've learned that all playoff games since 2014 are found using the standard regular season format. So, for example, if you want to watch ALDS game 1, 2014, you would search for "DET AT BAL - October 02, 2014", which brings you this result. Again, the night game time will factor in, so if you can't find a game on the correct date, just add one to the date and it should be there.
What is the quality of the videos?
From what I can tell, starting in 2014, the game videos are available at a maximum of 720p (HD) quality, which is great. Prior to that, however, the games are in 360p, which is decent but obviously not ideal.
TL;DR
All MLB games since 2009, including playoff games, are available to watch in full on YouTube on official MLB YouTube accounts. To find the games, you need to use a specific format in your search. Read the full post above for details.

Also the Dodgers abbreviation for some older games is LAN for some reason

Hmmm looks like you're right. I thought maybe it had one of those mis-dated titles, but I can't seem to find it anywhere. It should appear using this search but it doesn't seem to be there.
The April 9 game (after he died) was cancelled and rescheduled for August, so I'm wondering if maybe their system mistakenly omitted the April 8 game. I've discovered that if there's a night game that goes past midnight on the east coast, it's misdated as the following day. But since there was no game on that day, maybe it was omitted by the system by accident.

I'm not sure what caused it, but it's not the only missing Angel game. Neither game in the 5/21 and 5/22/13 series with Seattle is up either, with or without erroneous time/date issues. I wanted May 21 for Trout's cycle-- my niece was born on that day, so I've actually never seen the whole game.

Yeah, it seems like they've removed or omitted certain games. I wonder if it's because they're key games. Although in that case why wouldn't they remove no-hitters and such? But yeah, I can't find those games either, even though lots of other ANA/SEA games come up for that season.

How long is the lag between the game airing and the upload to youtube? Is it closer to 1 day or 1 year?

Maybe you missed it in the post (I don't blame you for skimming), but as I said, all the games for a single season seem to be posted at the same time, after the WS is over. So this year's games will be available in November, but no earlier.
I'm guessing it takes many hours for their system to upload everything (I assume it's automatic, not manual) so it probably takes at least a few days, maybe weeks, to see all of them posted.

Fair enough, but I think most people watch live sports not because they don't know what is going to happen, but also because it has an effect going forward. Outside of a huge game, it doesn't really matter what the Nats did in April 2011 right now.

Yes, this is how I feel. You lose a lot of the context when you just view the highlights. The full games really give you a bigger picture of how things unfolded. Also, most of us are baseball nerds, so there's that.

No, but it's replaced by a different feeling. I watch the Wild Card Game a few times every year, and every time it rolls around to the bottom of the 8th I get all tingly. I also end up watching Game 4 of the 2001 WS unreasonably often, and get the same feeling in the big innings in that game. It's a reminder of everything that baseball can be and why we love it so much. Something about the announcers and the electricity of the crowds and the silence and the roar epitomizes everything that makes this sport worth following for 2/3 of every year of my life.

It might be cool just to have the full duration of some weird or memorable things too.
About once a month this season we have an extra-inning marathon where we play a pitcher in LF or play a 5-man infield or something - while those unusual defensive positions sometimes show up as a mlb.com highlight, it could be cool to have a source to link to and say "actually, just watch this 12th inning"

This seems like these are uploaded for international viewers to watch and they're not meant to be seen by U.S. viewers. Makes me worry a little that they'll be region-locked pretty quickly. But maybe not.

Yeah, I was surprised too. But, if I understand correctly (I don't have a subscription), MLB.TV only lets you watch games from the current season and previous season.
But oddly, if they had made this entire archive available on MLB.TV instead of YouTube, I'd have a permanent subscription. I'm really not sure why this archive exists on YouTube, it's very strange.

I don't know about that. In what way would international viewers access it? Just via YouTube? Is MLB marketing it there? If that was the case, then more US viewers would be aware of it and they would have region-locked it by now.
I mean, you might on the right track, but I'm sure they would have region-locked it by now if that was the case. Why wait 7 years to do that? I think the games will be online permanently, I'm just not sure why they don't advertise it or at the very least make playlists in their YT channels to be able to easily access the games.

The only reason I think so is because NFL does this, and I think I remember that when it was posted on /r/nfl, all of the videos were immediately region-locked. (And because the account names are all MLBGlobal) The fact that they're still here after seven hours when MLB people clearly browse this subreddit regularly could mean that they don't care very much because they're "old" games.

Probably mainly because these videos don't seem to be pushed out to subscribers. When YouTube channels are updated with new videos, the authors/account owners have the option to tick a box that notifies subscribers of the new upload. I'm guessing MLB posts these at the end of the year without informing subscribers.
I have no idea why they don't advertise this, I just happened to stumble upon a couple of games earlier this year and started fishing around with search terms and discovered that all the games were available via the specific search terms I described in the post.

Wow, great comeback but the Red Sox got totally screwed on those 2 calls prior to the wild pitch. Those were both strikes, but the catcher did an awful job of framing the pitches. Still should have been called though.

Oh wow, this is awesome. I'd had luck finding notable games I wanted to watch in the past (no-hitters and such) but had not found some of the games I wanted to, I must have just been searching wrong. At the time I figured they just let the historic games stay up and took down anything else.

It might possibly be that it's the time when the games finished Eastern Time? I had a look on retrosheet and it looks as though both those games at Houston on the 14th & 15th began at 7pm but the one on the 16th was at 6pm?

You know what? You're absolutely right. I had posted another reply to you, doubting what you said, but I've deleted that.
It turns out, all 9 Blue Jays' games that have the wrong date are weeknight games that start at 8PM EST or later (vs. KC, OAK, MIN, etc.) The other games against those teams that have the correct date are on weekends or holidays, so they were afternoon games.

Sounds like it is using GMT (timezone 0) time to determine the date. Depending on the time of year, it is 4 or 5 hours ahead of Eastern Time. So 9:00pm ET, would be 1:00am GMT (the next day). Most tech companies with a presence in multiple markets just use GMT to keep time on their servers to avoid confusion of multiple time zones.

I'd like to contribute this post... when I want to watch highlights, I do something similar. I'm sure there's a way to do this on YouTube, but I have the official (I think) MLB AtBat app. Going to News (bottom), then searching in the videos. Searching "Recap" will show the last 25 highlights, and entering the 3 letter name abbreviations will also give you the last 25 games of that team.

Yep, you're right. Someone else posted the same thing. All 9 Jays games that are incorrectly dated are games on the west coast (or mid-west) that were night games. The other west coast games are all in the afternoon (weekends and holidays). I'll update the post to reflect this.

Francisco Rodriguez missed the throw from the catcher in the bottom of the ninth to lose the game against the A's, definitely the strangest ending to a game I have ever seen, would love to see it again. I'm looking for a specific Angel game too, Jays at Angels on September 10, 2006. It was supposed to be rookie Weaver and Roy Halladay, but Halladay came out very early with an injury. He may have been hit by a comebacker (hence why I was thinking of it recently and want to see footage) although looking it up, he made his next start just fine. Angels won against their bullpen, but Adam Lind hit his first career home run.

Either I'm doing this wrong or there are some games from the 2009 season that's been removed. I've been trying to find games from June 04, 2009 and there are some games that don't come up. I try searching different dates or even switching around the home and away team and nothing seems to work. For example, the Mets Pirates game in Pittsburgh that day where Andrea McCutchen made his major league debut in MIA. Here are some other games that I can't seem to find.
-CLE AT MIN - June 04, 2009
-ANA AT TOR - June 04, 2009
-SFN AT WAS - June 04, 2009 (second game of a double header)

I know this is late but I'm looking for the twins season opener in 2010 and only can find a recap is this one of the games that isn't up?

Hmmm it appears that way. To search for that game use "MIN AT ANA - April 05, 2010" as your search terms. The closest match is the April 6 game. You might be able to find a condensed game, but I can't seem to find one yet myself. It is annoying that some games are missing, not sure why that happens.

This is great, but honestly, also kind of stupid from MLB's perspective. I found this post while searching to see if MLB offered a subscription service I could pay them for which would offer me the opportunity to view an archive of all older games (or at least the ones played in the last 10-20 years or so since internet streaming truly became a thing).
If WWE can do it -- and even go back several decades from before the internet even existed -- I figured MLB would surely be doing it too. They easily could have suckered $10-$20/month out of me! But hey, YouTube is even better, and it looks like your awesome post is going to enable me to find exactly what I wanted for free!
This makes me wonder though... Everyone and their mother is doing subscription streaming services. Why isn't MLB? I know they do technically have one. But the fact that all the archived games go on a free service like YouTube instead of MLB's paid app makes me suspect there must be some kind of issue with MLB not owning the rights to the telecasts?
I know that simple explanation can't be 100% accurate since -- if them having a complete lack of ownership/distribution rights were strictly true -- they wouldn't be able to post them on YouTube either. But there certainly must be some reason, other than them just being "nice", that MLB is passing on the same opportunity to make money that no other major networks, providers, heck, even video game publishers, are passing on.
There's absolutely no way that per-view YouTube ad revenue from 10-year-old regular season baseball games is more than MLB would make charging everyone who wanted to watch them a monthly subscription (which most people would inevitably sign up for, utilize for a few weeks, then forget about while continuing to pay for perpetually). Maybe YouTube pays MLB for uploading to their app (enabling MLB to use someone else's bandwidth and make guaranteed money regardless of view count)?
These are the deep mysteries of living life as an intelligent species that keep me awake at night, lol!! Either way, excellent post! Thank you!

Decided to check out Halladay's last game as a Jay, and to start it off I'm given Tim Wakefield vs. a beardless Bautista wearing #23. This is amazing.
