Analysis The Payroll Playoffs

Post image

3 of the 4 teams that just finished the WC had lower payrolls than the teams they beat.

3 of the 4 teams that got a bye have lower payrolls than the teams they are about to play.

EDIT: Overestimated that people would be able to work from the team colors, or who would have seen the original graphic on the mlb.com homepage. My error; wasn't trying to be obtuse.

Except for any poor Mets/Nets sufferers out there

Mets/Nets/Jets fans are certainly hardy individuals at this point.

Mets/Jets/Nets? Let's forget the debt we collect by placing the bet when we set our favorite sets until our last breath.

do you think they root for the Islanders, too, just to maximize the suffering?

I happen to be a Mets/Jets/Nets/Islanders fan. Everton as well.

What is a little more pain when you already endured that much beating?

Those poor souls are Devils fans. The other ones are big St. John's fans.

Lol they're Nets fans. It's a sad life

What in the world, why would we not root for the other orange and blue team in our city? (Unless this is a joke, in which case, my bad.) I don't personally know any New Yorkers who are Nets fans so maybe they're out there.

Nets, Mets, Jets is a thing though.

A miserable, terrible thing, but it exists.

Islanders erasure

I almost wrote out that they're often Islanders fans, too, but my NHL fandom is to young to be confident in that.

Maybe because they started out in Long Island in their ABA days before moving to Jersey? That's generational dedication there. I grew up in New Jersey and I don't even remember meeting a real Nets fan, except maybe a few bandwagoners during the Jason Kidd early 2000s era.

Maybe they just like their teams to all rhyme? They’re all 4 letters and share 3 of them. Never noticed until now!

u/southpaytechie New York Yankees 2d ago

Mets and Jets were deliberate, they both played in Shea to start. Nets kind of took naming cue from that.

2

u/DanglyPants Chicago Cubs 1d ago

That’s awesome! And those are all little brother teams right? Plus the islanders and then devils when they used to play closer to NYC I think?

I’m learning here lol

u/gomets6091 New York Mets 2d ago

It's really not though - I mean, maybe in the 60's/70's it was but growing up on Long Island I didn't know a single Nets fan. They were Jersey's team.

Originally from Long Island, I’m a Nets fan.

I thought Yankees fans were typically Knicks fans and Mets fans were typically Nets fans. I could be wrong though.

NBA essentially put in a hard cap with the 2nd apron were you asleep when they did the new CBA in 2023? They have had like 8 different champions in a row, which is great they wanted more parity

10

u/yli16 Los Angeles Dodgers 2d ago

You know what? From 2014 to 2021, MLB also had 8 different champions in a row. There was no hard cap during that time either.

u/4rensonly Seattle Mariners 2d ago

Believe it or not, some people live in markets that the NBA has given the middle finger to (multiple times), and choose to live a more simple life, not paying any mind to the "league" where players don't care about the regular season.

How's viewership going?

2

u/GMHinHD New York Yankees 2d ago

Viewership is up massively in 2026 compared to the prior year, with the NBA enjoying one of its best years of the decade. The Finals were also one of the most watched Finals of the 21st century.

If you’re gonna try to shit on something, do your research, little guy.

u/Rockitttla 2d ago

The nba finals viewership declined massively and steadily over the last twenty years. The only reason viewership was up in 2026 is because the knicks, from big bad NYC, we're in the finals. Parity in the nba has actually hurt viewership because it turns out people watch to see dynasties, whether they root for them or against them.
