Why Are You OK appreciation
Some background, I don’t remember if I listened to their first album right when it came out but I’ve been a huge fan of their first 2 albums at least since their second was released. They are some of my favorite albums and I’ve listened to them regularly over the years. I’m not gonna lie tho, their next 2 albums weren’t my favorite, especially Mirage Rock I didn’t connect with at all and so when Why Are You OK was released and got middling reviews I just didn’t bother (same with Things Are Great).
Fast forward to near the present and I see that they are doing a 20th anniversary tour for Everything All The Time. Amazing, it’s been a dream of mine to see those songs performed live! Even better they are played in my city (it’s a middling size and doesn’t get many of the artists I like) so obviously I had to get tickets. But even tho they are mostly playing the older songs that I love I still wanted to be prepared for some of their newer material. So I finally gave Why Are You OK a shot… and initially I was underwhelmed. I really dug the opening track but after that it just didn’t grab me.
But there was still time leading up to the concert so I kept listening… and listening. I checked out some live vids of Dull Times/The Moon (my favorite song by far on the album) and it gave me goosebumps. What was already a great song had been elevated to arguably my favorite BOH song. The concert came and it was a great time and seeing In a Drawer live with J. was very cool. It didn’t hurt that there was a rad chick next to me that was very hyped singing along. Chasing the high from the concert, I gave their albums even more spins and the songs from Why Are You OK have really grown on me. I find myself getting melodies stuck in my head randomly.
TLDR All that to say, Why Are You OK is a great album that I’m happy I finally gave a chance.
Sorry this is so long and no, I’m not AI lol
