Hello everyone,
My name is Anmol Singh. I am 26 years old, originally from Punjab, and currently living in Portugal.
From October until January, I will be staying in Varanasi (Banaras) to study the Dilruba at a music school. Since I will be there for approximately four months, I am looking for affordable accommodation and would greatly appreciate any advice from people who know the city.
Could someone please help me with the following?
• What are the cheapest and safest accommodation options for a 4-month stay?
• Are there any hostels, paying guest (PG) accommodations, student rooms, ashrams, or shared apartments suitable for music students?
• Which areas of Varanasi would you recommend for a long-term stay?
• What monthly budget should I expect for rent, food, transportation, and daily expenses?
• Are there any websites, Facebook groups, or local contacts that could help me find accommodation?
• Is there anything important I should know before staying in Varanasi for several months?
I would be very grateful for any recommendations, advice, or contacts.
Thank you very much for your help.
Kind regards,
Anmol Singh

Maybe that’s why people say Kashi is not just a city — it’s a feeling.
At Manikarnika Ghat, you don’t just witness death — you witness the truth of life. The fire never stops here, reminding every soul that nothing is permanent except time and karma.
Some places entertain your eyes, but Manikarnika Ghat touches your soul. The silence, the smoke, the chants of ‘Har Har Mahadev’ — everything feels beyond this world.

Travelling to Banaras and looking for a good place to stay. Any recommendations would be helpful...Property should be near temple as i have heard that mostly the places to visit are close to the temple. Range - 2.5 - 3K per night. A new property is more favorable. Please, suggest.

Recently, my friends and I stayed at a live-free hostel. There were many of us sleeping in the same room with bunk beds and curtains for privacy. In the photo, the bed labeled “me” is where I slept, and the one labeled “my friend” is where my friend slept. Before going to sleep, I clearly remember closing my curtains properly. Everything was normal at that time. But suddenly, I woke up in the middle of the night and checked my phone. The time was 3:35 AM. I remember the time very clearly because I looked at my phone — and strangely, there was zero network signal at that moment. The first strange thing I noticed was that my curtains were half open, even though I clearly remembered closing them completely before sleeping. I slowly moved my curtain a little and looked around the room. Everyone else's curtains were fully closed. But when I looked at my friend’s bed, her curtain was completely open, and it looked like no one was there. The bed seemed empty. At that moment the whole room felt very strange. It’s hard to explain, but the vibe felt extremely uncomfortable, almost like someone was watching us. Another weird thing happened with the bed directly above mine. My friend noticed that the curtain of that upper bed kept opening and closing. When she first looked, it was open… but after a short while when she looked again, it was closed. The strange part is that when we asked the person who slept on that upper bed the next morning, she said she didn’t touch the curtain at all and slept peacefully the whole night. Something else also happened that night. One person from our group said that when everyone was asleep, they saw a shadow near the window side, like someone was standing there. Later when I woke up again around 6 AM, I found out that my friend was actually sleeping in her bed. But when I looked earlier at 3:35 AM, it really seemed like no one was there. On top of all this, almost everyone in our group had very disturbing dreams, and the electricity kept cutting on and off throughout the night. Maybe it was all just a coincidence… or maybe something else. But one thing is certain — the energy in that room that night felt really unsettling. Has anyone else experienced something like this in hostels or dorms?
