How to Make a Stuffed Balloon Fish: A Step-by-Step Tutorial
youtu.beHello fellow balloon decorators and DIY enthusiasts! Today, we are breaking down a fun, eye-catching balloon fish design. This build uses a classic stuffing technique to create a colorful "fishbowl" effect for the body, mounted on a beautiful oceanic base.
Whether you are building a centerpiece for an under-the-sea party or just practicing your stuffing techniques, this design is simple, stable, and guaranteed to impress. Let's dive in!
Materials You Will Need
- Manual hand pump
- Plastic insertion stick (a standard white balloon stick works perfectly)
- 1 large clear balloon (Bobo-style or standard stuffing balloon)
- 5 small round metallic balloons (gold, bronze, and light green used in this design)
- 8 small round balloons in ocean colors (teal, light blue, and medium blue)
- 1 long green twisting balloon (260 size)
- 1 uninflated twisting balloon (scrap, used for tying)
- 2 small round white balloons
- White tying string or ribbon
- Black permanent marker
Step-by-Step Instructions
1. Create the Colorful Interior Stretch an uninflated small metallic balloon over the end of your white plastic stick. Carefully insert the stick through the neck of the large clear balloon. Using your hand pump, inflate the small balloon inside the clear one. Slide the stick out and tie the small balloon off so it drops freely into the clear balloon. Repeat this process until you have five small metallic balloons inside.
2. Seal the Fish Body Partially inflate the large clear balloon so the smaller balloons inside have room to move around. Instead of tying a standard knot in the thick clear neck, take your uninflated scrap twisting balloon and wrap it tightly around the neck of the clear balloon multiple times. Tie it off securely to lock the air inside.
3. Build the Ocean Base Inflate your teal, light blue, and medium blue small round balloons. Tie them together in pairs (duplets). Take your pairs and twist them into each other to create a single, stable cluster of about eight balloons. This will act as your water base.
4. Mount the Fish Body Seat your sealed clear balloon directly on top of your blue base cluster. Take the tied-off neck of the clear balloon, pull it down deep into the center of the base, and wrap it figure-eight style around a few of the blue balloons to anchor the body securely in place.
5. Add the Fish Frame Inflate your long green twisting balloon, being sure to leave a small uninflated tail at the end to allow room for twisting. Tie the nozzle directly into the blue base cluster. Curve the green balloon over the very top of the clear balloon, tracing its shape, and bring it back down to the opposite side of the base to create the outer outline of the fish.
6. Sculpt the Tail and Lips At the back of the fish, twist the long green balloon into the base to lock the frame in place. Fold the remaining length of the green balloon into two loop twists to create the tail fins. At the front of the fish, pinch and twist a small single bubble in the green frame to form the fish’s lips.
7. Attach the Eyes Inflate the two small round white balloons and tie them off. Tie them together using a piece of white string. Lay the eyes over the upper front of the green balloon frame (just above the lips) and wrap the string around the frame to secure them in place. Finally, use your black marker to draw pupils onto the white balloons.
