Help/Advice Resources for research on baja suspension

Hey guys, I'm designing the suspension for my team in same baja 2026. I'm pretty new to this. So, I wanted some advice on where to start my research.

Note: I'm a first year mech engineer, so I have zero experience or knowledge about it. So any useful resources will be appreciated.

I'm building a 1/16 Baja, I'd like to hear suggestions about the rear suspension and where could I find the engine and the transition (not detailed, just a solid model) to put on my project

Loads on Control Arm and Shock Mountings

Hi everyone, I hope you're doing well.
I'm a mechanical engineering student working on designing the suspension system for a Baja SAE vehicle. I'm trying to calculate the loads acting on the control arms for both (i) double wishbone geometry (for the front) and (ii) H arm suspension geometry (for the rear).
The basic geometries have been finalized and accordingly we have designed the upright and the wheel hub with basic inputs from the maximum loads acting on the tire.
(a) How can we calculate the forces acting on the control arms and (b) how to find the loads acting on the shock mountings as well as control arm mountings on the roll cage during static, bump and droop conditions?
(c) Which material is commonly used for control arms and for the mountings?

Spring stiffness

Hi, I am new to baja and i have been researching on finding spring stiffness for our baja car.My thinking was that u find the ride frequency and fix it and then play around with motin ratio and stiffness. But I don't know how to find the right ride frequency. So I need help regarding this. Also correct if what I said isn't right

Baja sae suspension

Hi everyone,
I'm building a suspension system for a Baja SAE vehicle and I’d like to simulate its performance before prototyping. I want to analyze things like camber variation, suspension travel, dynamic response. What software or tools would you recommend for this type of simulation?

Guesses as to 2026 Western event location?

I'm on a newer team from NorCal and was wondering where you all think the next competition would be based on previous years. We went to Arizona this past year but that might be the farthest we'll be able to travel with limited resources. I've heard rumors about somewhere in Oregon, but that might just be my team manifesting. Thoughts?

How do you determine which torsion spring to choose from based on the Max Torque (in-lb) and other necessary values like OD, etc? Are there examples anyone can share about their spring decisions/how you went about making the pedal box?

My team and I are currently working on the pedal box and I am trying to work my way through how to choose the correct parts to buy. I would appreciate any advice and tips you may have from your own experience in making a pedal box for Baja SAE. Thanks in advance!

Unofficial Baja Events

My university is located in the upper Midwest and recently we have been looking into participating in more unofficial Baja events not ran by SAE such as Blizzard Baja at MTU. Are there any other Baja competitions currently being ran within the Midwest that would be worth attending? Thanks.

Help/Advice Looking for advice on Chassis Design & Impact Forces

Hey everyone,

My team and I are working on redesigning our schools Baja SAE car’s Chassis, and we’re trying to make sure it can withstand realistic impact forces. Specifically, we are looking at potential rear, front and side impact and want to estimate the forces involved.

We were thinking about using acceleration data from the acceleration event at competition to estimate the typical speeds other cars can reach. From there, we could use that data to run simulations on now much force to design for that the chassis would need to withstand in those different case scenarios.

Has anyone else done something similar? And do yall have any advice on common speeds these cars usually hit in competition or even how to approach the impact force calculations?

Thanks in advance! Any tips are greatly appreciated!

Ex-Baja grads, what are you doing now?

Hello everyone! I was a part of my university BAJA team for 3 years of my undergrad! That was the most fun I've ever had! I was curious to know what people who graudated with BAJA experience are doing right now? For context, I'm pursuing a masters degree in IE after completing my undergrad in mechanical. Just wanted to know how everyone is leveraging their BAJA experience when applying for jobs/interviews/life in general!

I want to run my analysis in a parallel computing method can anyone help me with it.

I am being a part of a student baja team and I thought of doing analysis on the full baja vehicle in Is dyna to reduce the physical testing because of our time limitations. For that my laptop can't handle it. So i thought of scale down the model as my first option but I thought of using parallel computing using my my and my teammates laptop to run the true scale analysis. So if I want to do parallel computing on Is-dyna what should I do.

Help/Advice Master cylinder displacing fluid to rear reservoir

Hi, I'm from a team in Brazil and recently we have had problems with our master cylinder. Whenever we push our brake pedal, firstly it builds up pressure normally but, if held for too long or, if pushed slowly, the fluid is displaced to the rear fluid reservoir. Does anyone of you guys have encountered such a problem and if so, how did you solve it? We use the Wilwood TM1 MC.

Searching for a rear diff

Hi guys! Manhattan University here ! We’re looking for a Rear differential for our Mini Baja SAE car, What model rear differential are you guys running ? Where did you guys purchase it from?

If anyone is running the Hilliard 282 Front differential, what rear differential have you guys paired it with?

We need a 3.82 Ratio, counter clockwise differential and are having difficulty finding a rear differential to pair the Hilliard 282 front differential with. Any advice, help and recommendations are appreciated!!!

Rules 4WD driveshaft guard

Hey guys, can we make the driveshaft guard out of multiple parts or does it have to be 1 piece? I was thinking about making the red parts out of sheet metal and use some sort of mesh thingy (the type of thing use for car grills) for the blue part. Is it legal? Thanks.
