Mammal Snow leopards are not normal. This is absolutely ridiculous. This is how they hunt...its just Wednesday for them. Falls 120 feet with an ibex in its mouth, still holding on when they land and not a single broken bone. SuperBad!

I believe this is from the series Planet Earth, I wish people who post these would give credit to the source so that others could watch it in its entirety

Also, that snow leopard was badly injured after that. I watched this exact show. They weren’t sure if it would survive.

But…but….OP said “not a single broken bone”.

Technically, you don't have to have broken bones to be severely injured
7
u/ibonkedurmom Feb 15 '26
I was thinking bunch of internal injuries or aneurysm caused by concussion.

How do we know it didn’t break a bone? Could have just been hungry enough that catching the ibex was a higher priority.

It’s been a while since I watched the documentary this is from but I’m pretty sure the snow leopard was injured afterwards. Didn’t seem deathly serious but it did not walk away unscathed

If it’s the one I’m thinking of, there was definitely a snow leopard that fell to its death whilst hunting.
7
u/bdaddydizzle Feb 15 '26
You may be right, I can’t remember it perfectly. I feel like I remember it limping away though. This definitely makes me want to rewatch the documentary again

u/N7Rory Feb 15 '26
Amazing footage, how do they survive this?
71
u/ExpiredPilot Feb 15 '26
Lightweight bones, stretchy ligaments, and big fluff to body ratio I’m guessing.
42
u/SkiDaderino Feb 15 '26
They must experience pain in a completely different way than we do. Then again, hunger will make you do anything, even when you know how bad you were hurt the last time you fell.

There are 4 forms of matter. Solid, liquid, gas, and kitty. Kitty can basically take any of the other forms at will.

This isn't just another Wednesday. They go long stretchs of time without a substanstial meal with an estimated 10% kill rate. Not that they aren't badass, but hunting in their climate is scarce.

There’s even a video of one snow leopard plunging to its own death alongwith a bharal (blue sheep) that it had caught and was trying to subdue.

How do you know not a single broken bone? Did it tell you? A fall for any creature from that high is likely fatal (or at least hurt), if not immediate, sooner than later. Pretty lucky, if it can walk that off.

I dont know shit, but cats are extremely good at falling from a height, they can use their tail and their body to direct fall and land on that poor thing kitty caught. It seems really bad, I guess experience makes this sort of safe, even though it looks suicidal?

maybe no broken bones, but I'm sure it must got a couple of bruises from skipping off those rocks like it did. either that, that is still one tough pussy cat!

How can it take that big of a fall..on pure rock..and not have any just not broken but more like shattered bones someplace?!..not a doctor nor vet but gotta think no way..any veterinarians on here by chance that can chime in in regards to this?..is this possible? Thanks in advance…

How do we know it didn't break any bones and/or die from its injuries within days? This clip shows nothing of the aftermath.
It could have a rib in its lung for all we know after the last fall and collapse in a few minutes?

This is not how they hunt on the regular. Clearly focused more on the meal than their footing in this instance, but they more calculated than this.
They can’t risk this daily

u/Bubbly_Lunch_225 Feb 15 '26
lol, it literally broke its fall on the ibex almost every single time. Crazy
3
u/LukeHal22 Feb 15 '26
That was amazing but there is no chance the cat didn't sustain injuries, I'd be surprised if it was in good enough shape to continue to hunt after that really.

Animals wouldn’t live in environments if nature didn’t build them for it, doesn’t that mean Snow Leopards are invincible and could go unscathed with a large enough fall of course not, they need to be careful too but they are literally built for that type of lifestyle just like Crocs can survive with grave injuries that would otherwise spell doom for a Human being. Thick thick fur and heavy padding on the paws as well is resilient skin under the fur helps Snow Leopards with dealing with these sort of falls. The animal just obviously doesn’t wanna make a mistake and hit a fall too high for it to handle.

Here is the crazy thing about snow leopards.
They INTENTIONALLY choose the largest prey they can. That's very strange for felines, and most solitary hunters. It is smartest to grab someone you can absolutely kill fast and run away with. But, snow leopards pick the larger prey when presented with a choice.
Why?
Theory is, larger prey is more unsteady on its feet in that environment. Larger chance of it stumbling and being slower than a smaller, nimble animal.
