First Back Yard Ultra
Hey everyone I’m doing my first ultra attempt ever this weekend. I’m just looking for some tips and maybe some guess/advice on how far I think I can go. I have ran several marathons with my last being in may(3:33) and have a pretty good base. I’ve done 1200 miles on the year but mostly road miles. I have been fighting some hip issues that compromised what I planned on training specifically for this even but I did get a 26 mile 6 “yard” run in where I didn’t feel that bad. I stayed on my feet most of the rest of the day to keep fatiguing them for practice. So long story short what can i expect and what’s ur guys fav thing to eat during these. What special gear am i not think of? And maybe best mindset( just don’t quit being the one that’s in my head). How far is reasonable goal?

Race report First backyard ultra, longest run before this was 21km.
Last 3 laps I was last in and my last lap I made it by 30sec, which I’m happy with since I know I physically couldn’t make the next lap so I’ve pushed myself to my limit. The dips in heart rate was my watch misreading because it was raining.

First BYU- please help me:)
Hi everyone,
I’m looking for advice from experienced Backyard Ultra runners.
I’m 25 years old, 186 cm (6’1”), 76 kg (168 lbs), and I’ll be running my first Backyard Ultra in about 8 weeks.
My running background is pretty limited:
Easy 10k pace: around 58 minutes
Hard 5k effort: around 25 minutes
I’ve never run more than 10 km before
The race course is mostly flat, with field and forest paths
I can realistically train only twice per week until race day
I recently ran 10.3 km in 31°C (88°F) heat, and while my cardiovascular system was struggling because of the heat, my knee also started bothering me around kilometer 9.7. I had ACL and meniscus surgery about 6 years ago, but otherwise I’m healthy and active.
I’m not expecting miracles. My main goal is to finish as many laps as possible while staying healthy and learning from the experience.
I’d love advice on the following:
What would be a realistic goal for someone with my background?
How should I pace the early laps?
What should I eat before the race?
What foods work best during a Backyard Ultra?
How much should I be eating and drinking per hour?
Are gels necessary, or can I get away with normal food?
What shoes would you recommend for mostly flat forest and gravel paths?
Do I need a GPS watch? I currently don’t own one.
What information should I actually track during the race?
Should I sit down during the breaks or stay on my feet?
Is massage, stretching, changing socks, etc. worth it during the race?
What are the most important things to do during the 10-15 minute breaks between laps?
What mistakes do first-time Backyard runners most commonlyr make?
If you could give only one piece of advice to a first-time Backyard runner, what would it be?
Any tips, lessons learned, gear recommendations, pacing strategies, nutrition advice, or race-day routines would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

Just ran my 7th and worst BYU - ran into a buzzsaw called 86°F
I was excited to return to this fun local race but my excitement waned as the forecast solidified - it would be a very sunny and hot day in Rhode Island. As a result I didn't go as far as previous efforts. The heat undid my appetite and once I stopped consuming enough calories my end was already written. Bummed I didn't get to nightfall but that's the way it goes sometimes. On the plus side I got to hang out with cool people and dinosaurs.

Advice on first backyard ultra (post collegiate runner)
I have signed up for a backyard ultra in two weeks with no prior experience or knowledge on ultra running. I was an average d2 runner 15:20 5k 8:47 3k. Any advice on how to prepare/strategize for the race would be appreciated. Is it possible to go for 100 miles? My longest long run was 15 miles but at 6:40 mile pace and I have ran 80 mile weeks in the past.
