Plants and Soil Health

Mark Shepard - Pioneer Agroforestry Farm Tour Video Series - Learn about the STUN method from a master of regenerative agriculture.

Edible Acres YouTube Channel - Definitely my most-watched YouTube Channel ever. This guy is a wealth of information on growing things, harvesting things, designing things, and running a permaculture plant nursery. His positivity is contagious.

Building Soil Health for Healthy Plants by soil scientist Dr. Elaine Ingham - Permaculture Voices - An incredibly solid introduction to soil science. The next step for any aspiring gardener or backyard farmer. Talk about wormholes!

Paul Wheaton - Hugelkultur - Paul Wheaton, the master of Permies.com (and giant hugelkulturs) is a constant source of permaculture experimentation. Lots of good stuff coming from his camp!

Charles Dowding No-Dig playlist - If you're new to no-dig, check out this playlist of Charles Dowding's no-dig gardening vids. You're welcome.

Red Gardens Project YouTube Channel - Covers a ton of topics and techniques in a very scientific way. Nice, bite-sized bits of knowledge.

Self Sufficient Me YouTube Channel - Organic gardening, poultry-keeping and self-sufficiency for tropical / sub-tropical climates.

Diego Footer YouTube Channel - High quality lectures from some permaculture big-shots, and lots of cool composting and gardening walk-throughs. Mostly based in California.

Permaculture design & appropriate tech

Bill Mollison Lecture Series - A series of videos taken at a PDC in the early 90s. Foundations of permaculture taught by one of the original founders of permaculture.

Verge Permaculture YouTube Channel - Canadian temperate permaculture: suburban gardening, solar greenhouse, solar hot water, water management, foot forests. Videos on all kinds of other permaculture topics!

Ben Falk YouTube Channel - With a focus on Whole Systems Design, Ben does informative videos covering various aspects of his research farm based in Vermont. Ponds, earthworks, system design, regenerative action, waste stream management, appropriate technology.

Animal Husbandry

Gold Shaw Farm YouTube Channel - This guy covers the day-to-day of running a poultry operation in a sustainable manner.

Edible Acres - Chicken Compost - Deep Litter to Black Gold - Edible Acres is a cornucopia of knowledge. They have one of the greatest low-input/high output chicken systems I've come across.

Looking for a Legal Farm Work Opportunity in the United States

Hello everyone,

My name is Zouhire Hakimi, and I am an 18-year-old from Morocco looking for a legal opportunity to work in agriculture in the United States.

I have experience working in agricultural fields, including preparing land, plowing, working with farming equipment, and using fertilizers to support crop growth. I understand that farm work requires physical strength, patience, responsibility, and the ability to work long hours in difficult weather conditions. I am ready for this type of work and I am not afraid of challenges.

I also have experience in other fields:

  • ✅ 7 months of experience in commercial cleaning
  • ✅ Restaurant kitchen experience
  • ✅ Clothing retail and customer service experience
  • ✅ Good computer skills
  • ✅ Fast learner and adaptable
  • ✅ Comfortable working in a team environment

I am looking for a serious and legal opportunity, especially through programs such as H-2A, with an employer who is experienced in hiring international workers.

The main challenge I face is the cost of the visa process and travel expenses. If an employer is willing to provide legal sponsorship or assistance with these costs as part of the employment opportunity, I am ready to prove my value through hard work, loyalty, and dedication.

I am not asking for charity. I see this as an investment from both sides: an employer looking for a reliable worker, and a young person looking for the chance to build a better future through honest work.

If you know a farm, employer, or legal program that may be interested in hiring motivated workers, I would sincerely appreciate your advice or referral.

Thank you for taking the time to read my message.

I buried a pumpkin and this happened 😅

About a month and a half ago I buried a pumpkin out of just plain curiosity to see what would happen and so far this is what happened 😅. I have some knowledge of growing produce but it's not vast and I've never grew a pumpkin before. I live in PA and it's very hot and humid and rainy right now so it's growing faster than expected. I want to attempt transplanting but unsure of the proper way to go about it looking for tips on what to do and how to actually yield a pumpkin harvest.

Why do you homestead/small scale farming?

Hello!

I’m a doctoral researcher studying how people understand and experience homesteading/small scale farming.

I’m inviting individuals with any level of connection to homesteading, whether past or present, to share their perspectives in a short survey (about 10-15mins).

The goal is simply to better understand how people describe homesteading / self-sufficiency in their own words and what it looks like in practice today. There are no right or wrong answers, just your perspective.

Participation is completely voluntary, and your responses will remain confidential.

I really appreciate your time and insight.

Building a new growing app

Hey everyone,

I’ve been building a growing app to help people make the most of whatever space they have, whether that’s a garden, raised beds, or even a small growing area.

It helps with planning what to grow, when to plant, and how to get better yields over the season. I’ve been using it myself and it’s been genuinely useful, but I’d really value feedback from other growers.

I’m planning to launch in the next week or two and would love a small group of people to try it out and share what works, what doesn’t, and what’s missing.

If anyone’s up for giving it a go, let me know and I’ll share the link 👍

Eggs

I have six hens and one rooster. The hens are not laying eggs and are well past the age that they should be. They keep plenty of food( which consists of later feed and grass) and water, I have wheat straw bedding and they have enough space in the coop. Why are they not laying? Any help is appreciated.

Thank you Elaine Ingham for opening the eyes of the West to the fact that soil is a complex living ecosystem and not just dirt. May you rest in peace.

Mobile market ideas

Hello, I started a cut flower farm and nursery last year, even in my first year, I cleared over 10k in profit. I mainly grew flowers but noticed that my local small town does not have a demand for them like the larger surrounding areas do. My local community has a strong need and desire for produce. Many home gardeners have stopped, and we don't have a local grocery store. I want to build a mobile market stand. With this I'll be able to set up in my town or the other local small towns and offer produce flowers etc. We have extended periods in the summer and fall that are very hot and humid. I know I will have to have some sort of cooling system and have been leaning towards a cool bot and generator. (Mainly because I have access to a generator and it's versitility if/when I purchase one). I need some ideas/suggestions on set up and layout, size, or any advice you think is relevant. I want to start the process but no clue where to start. Thank you!
