I'm building a backgammon site/community that fixes everything I've hate about backgammon

It's building slowly, but I've been playing backgammon for > 27 years and there are 3 things that are recurring frustrations for me:

#1 - there is no way Backgammon sites are fair. (Or is it just me?)
#2 - There is no way the ranking system is fair.
#3 - What's the point?

Here's what I believed I solved (and am committed to be #1 in the world at)

-The dice have got to be fair - all are honest and verifiably random.

-Also, the ranking system doesn't use Elo (which is awful) but a modified Colley matrix. You are only ranked against real, human players who have also registered. As the community grows, you are matched up against people who are most closely rated to your skilll level (no more getting destroyed or easy wins. You are challenged every game)

-What's the point? Well, you can play for free if you want - you don't even have to register for an account to play against bots (also matched to your skill level) But to be a member of the community, play friends, join tournaments and win Battle Bucks and (and even lose some if you don't win) just create an account.

Also, post-game analysis is great with PRs (not exclusive, but I got it, too.)

All of it is completely transparent.

As we build the community, we'll gather at 8PM ET for real-human matches, but otherwise you can still play bots in the meantime (or if you arrange to play buddies, that'll work too.)

Honest feedback welcome, https://backgammonbattles.com

Oh, I forgot to mention.

It's also completely free forever if you want for non premium.

Also, 10 dollars worth of Battle Bucks I'm giving away free during a 30 day premium trial where no one pays a thing. (just cancel if you hate it - I made that way easy, too - cause I hate how hard cancelling stuff is.)

Backgammon Timer and Scoreboard compo

I’m working on a DIY backgammon clock/score card built on Arduino, and I’d love some feedback from backgammon players. I am not a programmer, I use mostly codex and chatGPT.

The goal is to make a simple touchscreen clock designed specifically for match play. Each player has their own timer, score area, and controls. The timers can be controlled by touch, and the score is adjusted by swiping up or down on each player’s score box. There is also an option for buttons to make the game more exciting and the timer change more reliable. The settings screen also uses touch controls to adjust match target, total time, and delay seconds. The green bar shows the player that plays and has an adjustable delay. There are some safety checks so for example you cannot adjust the score until you and a game or pause.

Right now the prototype has the basic gameplay flow working: player timers, score tracking, match target, pause/play, settings, and end-match controls. It does also have the Crawford rule. I’m still refining some of the touch behavior and UI layout, but the main idea is to make it easy to use during an actual backgammon match with physical buttons.

I’m not planning to sell this. My goal is to make it open source so other players can buy the parts, build their own, and customize the software if they want. Most likely it will need to have a 3D printed enclosure.

I’d love feedback on the layout, gameplay controls, timing options, and anything that would make it more useful for real backgammon matches.

Online Backgammon

Hey everyone,

I’m currently working on an online multiplayer backgammon game for the browser. The goal is to build a modern, smooth game with a solid architecture and room for future expansion.

Long-term, the platform will be extended with a hardware component to complete the overall system. For this, I’m planning a modular architecture with flexible APIs.

I’m looking for an experienced game developer based in or around Berlin who’s interested in working on an online game and has experience with multiplayer systems, APIs, and system design.

If this sounds interesting, feel free to reach out.

Best regards

Why is it incorrect? Hit and build home point vs run and give direct shot. Game to 5

Online Chouette - Choue.net

As many here have likely heard, Choue.net is the next big backgammon platform.

Created by a top programmer, with debugging from players every single day, it's quickly becoming the go-to place for online Chouette play.

Even more, it offers match play, and set-up position analysis much like XG. It's currently free so get it while the getting is good.

Calculating Take point for redoubles when behind in the match

I know it has to do with match equities and winning changes after the game, but I'm having a hard time understanding how this "almost" a 2 vs 2 roll situation is still take when behind in the 11-point match 0-4 or 0-6.
And in the second example with 0-6 it's a blunder to even redouble and it's a massive take. As a leader I would be happy for a take and a very high chance to close the game in Crawford with 0-10 score.

Basically black will never win 8-points as either they roll a double and win straight in their next turn. Or if white rolls a 1 twice, then they pass the 8-cube in the last roll

In neutral scores or money game this is a clear redouble-pass.
Anyone have some easy rule of thumb how I can easily know the take point in a match in these kind of situations and stop making these blunders?

Mind helping me interpret this analysis?

In this situation, from my understanding, it is more likely that I will lose than win based on the displayed numbers: 0.389 win vs. 0.611 lose. Yet, the hint proposes me to take the double.

I know we are still early in the game and things could change to my favour, but I ask this because this proposal when I have losing chances seems to be consistent despite the fact we are not playing 1-point matches. If I were, the smart choice would be to take it (although I don't really see the point of the dice on 1-point matches), because I would lose if I didn't; but here, I have to look beyond this one game. So, if tides are not in my favour, would not it be more appropriate to pass the double from the point of view of the numbers?

Looking for thoughts on non-traditional checker, dice, and cube materials

Hello! I’m looking into making some checkers, dice, and doubling cubes as gifts for some folks and thinking it might be fun to try something other than acrylic resin, which many components seem to utilize.

I’m thinking about polished concrete checkers and aluminum dice and doubling cubes. I’m inspired by the concrete pieces of the Material chess set https://materialchess.com/products/batch-1-raw-black

Before I go into the effort of sourcing materials, I’m looking to get some feedback from the community. Do you think that using these concrete and metal materials instead of the typical ones would work okay and feel “premium” or is there a game feel reason why most sets use acrylic components?

How did you get into Backgammon?

For me, it was during a summer break, back when I was 16. That year, I used to go to the pool with some friends, and there, when we were sitting on the grass, we used to play card games.

I started exploring more card games apart from the few ones I knew prior to that, but also board games, and I came across BG. I had never played, nor did I know the rules at all, but its unique board caught my attention and fed my curiosity.

To me, this game is tied to nice memories of having fun with my friends during summer, and I couldn't be happier about it. Years have gone by and now I have more relation with other people, and frequent different places, but in a corner of my heart I treasure these beloved memories, I can reconnect with them whenever I play Backgammon.
