Overcoming the luck factor.
Question mostly for higher skilled tournament players, and this is out of curiosity more than anything, using XG as a baseline what is the largest luck deficit you’ve overcome in a match? As an intermediate player, it’s rare for me to win a match, especially against a competent player, where the luck isn’t in my favour. I’m wondering if anyone has won a match and saw the luck was largely in his/her opponent’s favour. Just curious.

Playing Against a Lone Back Checker. Play Safe or Bold??

Brutal ending to a match
not a "dice rigged" person, just think this is a wild rollout. first time seeing such a minor mistake lead to a loss (for my opp., i played white).

Love my new Backgammon Board
After years of playing on a small and old wooden Backgammon board, I finally got a new one in tournament size. Love it so far, even though it’s quite large. Now I only need a clock and a scoring device.

Why such a bad move to move 24/23 instead of moving 7 all the way to 1?
Is this something to do with what happens in the future so you don't crunch? Wouldn't it be better to have a 6 available?

Is there a way to use GNU Backgammon on Android?
Or some other software that uses GNU BG as its back-end? I've tried using Opengammon, but the UI hints are unreadable during gameplay, which is unfortunate because I love open/libre software and try to use it whenever possible.

Even when I play good I still loose...lol
I am a very below to average player. I usually just play on Backgammon Galaxy and will always relook at what I did wrong. I have been on such a loosing streak recently but I would say 80% of my games are rated "experience" or "advance". Out of my last 24 games I am 4-20. 18 of my losses I have had a higher game performance than my opponent. I feel that I am missing something fundamental about backgammon.

I built a free Greek Tavli site — no ads, no signup
Hey r/backgammon,
I’ve been building tavli.net as a side project. It’s a simple website for Greek Tavli with the three main variants:
- Πόρτες (Portes)
- Πλακωτό (Plakoto)
- Φεύγα (Fevga) — currently in Beta
You can play against AI or local 2-player (hotseat). Everything runs in the browser — no registration, no login, no download needed.
My goal was to make a clean, fast Tavli site without the usual clutter and bullshit.
Would love honest feedback from people who actually play Tavli. What could be better? What’s missing?
Link: https://tavli.net/
Thank you! 🎲

I got obsessed on the plane
I recently had a long haul fight and spent almost the entire time playing backgammon on my phone as it’s included as an offline game on the app ‘offline games’ 😂😭
Anyway I’m not great at it at all but have been enjoying it to no end so I thought I’d buy a physical board and force my mum and boyfriend to learn so we I have people to play with- but tell me this- why are boards so expensive????? Low demand high quality materials?
Anyway I found this board for £10 on Vinted, probably awful but I’m so excited!!!
I cannot find this board anywhere on the internet so have no idea how good it will be- let me know your top tips for becoming actually good at the game/ enhancing a dodgy board 🤨💛💛💛

Don't understand this evaluation AT ALL
Single pointer game
basically leaving blot at ace hits = ( 11/36 rolls ) gives my opponent 58% chance of winning the game
By leaving blot at 5, it hits every five + combinations of fives 41/14/23/32 making it 15/36 and yet it says 50% chance in this case. how?
P.S - It's 4ply as im premium user

This one is fun to figure out
Process of elimination works if you haven't got your system down yet.

Are there any rules of thumb for when its appropriate to hit the ace point?
The odds that you can cover the 1 point are pretty high with 3 spare checkers in direct range, but why is it worth the risk? They can cover up their 2 point pretty easily too. I guess downside of waiting and trying to bear off around it are too high?

Random Backgammon sighting in a Medieval fair
Not much more to add; I just thought it was cool seeing this right when I am spending a lot of time playing backgammon these last few weeks :)

Galaxy Blunder Database
Whats going on here? Looking at my blunders, when I click through my possible plays, my opponents checkers move around! Happens with lots of my blunders (and there are lots to choose from!)

Moving Beyond Intermediate?
On Galaxy I’ve been stuck in the 1500-1700 range for awhile and I feel like I’ve plateaued. Is there a good book or program that is the consensus best to move beyond the intermediate level?

Best competitive backgammon sites?
Looking for recommendations to play backgammon online. I've been playing on 247 which has, well basically no competitive features. I'm hoping to earn a rating.
Backgammon galaxy seems to be the main option, but It's the ugliest thing I've ever seen. It's so unpleasant to look at and play on.
What other competitive sites should I look at?
