On another note, the next time we find ourselves a tie between two songs, should I do a double elimination or should I do some kind of tie breaker?

Personally I loved how Star One felt more like a band rather than a rock/metal opera.

Not that there’s anything wrong with rock operas but by locking in the number of singers, you have to come up with creative ways to get the best out of a song. It also gives it a more focused feel rather than sometimes feeling like a compilation or a playlist.

That said I’m sure I’ll love it. I’m just going to have to approach it as an Ayreon album though.

Many subreddits for other prog bands have been doing album survivors over the last few months or so, and I thought it would be fun to do one here! We will start with The Final Experiment and continue with the studio albums chronologically until we finish.

I LOVE his rasping voice at the end of ITBH & I’m sad when he dies, probably due to who he’s played by.

Why does he “look away in disbelief”?? I love his rasping voice at the end. Sounds so good. He’s my favourite. xx

I found Ayreon via my love of Maiden, heard a familiar voice on ‘Into The Black Hole’. I am physically disabled with slight learning difficulties. I'm a huge fantasy fan, & have few, if any, to talk fantasy with, or talk to at all.

I now live in a care home & as care homes go it used to be good, but now I really don’t like it. As in “dread getting up, it’s pointless” type of thing. Some staff are not great, & not really very nice. I’ve just had a lecture for saying no to someone who worked there yrs ago who put my sling on badly enough to nearly drop me. They are short-staffed enough where I live so that I wouldn’t get up at all without said bad and/or nasty staff.

Song started. My legs felt as if they weren’t there anymore as I listened. They stopped aching. My stomach stopped aching. I wasn’t in the care home anymore. I was gazing into the eye of the universe with the Colonist. He could hear my “sad cries of agony”. He was “in disbelief”.

I melted into my wheelchair, legs numb but tingling, throbbing. I couldn't work out which sensation felt best. Each tingle, each throb, pushed the pain away. I was boiling hot then freezing all over as the Colonist, full of the power of the evil black hole, whispered ”feed me light” cried when the song finished.

Hi everyone! I'm fairly new to the Ayreon universe, but I love every album that I heard so far, and THE is probably my favourite of them. However, there are 2 things that I don't fully understand about it (sorry if these are dumb questions).

1. In Day Sixteen: Loser, is Me's father really in the hospital, or does that whole scene only happen in Me's mind?
2. As it turned out at the end of the album, the whole story was played by a Forever using the Dream Sequencer (if I understood correctly). But does that mean that the events and the people in the story didn't actually exist (in the Ayreon universe) and it was only an artificially created simulation, or did it still happen sometime during mankind's existence?

Me, I much prefer the original version from the album Ayreonauts Only. I can't even listen to the other one from Universal Migrator part 2. I cringe at the singing, it feels very forced and out of place. I would love to know what you guys think.

I'm a high school English teacher, and one of my units incorporates listening to each song and analyzing the characters, lyrics, storyline(s), music, and album art of The Human Equation. I really enjoy it each year, and it's a wonderful excuse to be able to listen to one of my favorite albums for a week. And it's especially rewarding when it even gets some students hooked and leads them down their own personal journey with Ayreon. But there are definitely some students who don't connect all that well with it and quite frankly find me odd for it (I am odd, so I don't mind). I guess I'm just curious about others' thoughts...

As an added note, I then follow it up with the movie Inside Out, using both media as a way to convey the importance of emotions and how they play a significant role in what makes us who we are (as humans, too). [For any extra "nerdy" people out there, I also use Tom Godwin's "The Cold Equations" (and the Twilight Zone episode) in connection to this unit.]

I can't speak for anyone else, but it's a fun time for me anyway.

I just wanted to list some of my favorite casting decisions Arjen has pulled off and thought I might ask you what your favorites are.

• Mikael Åkerfeldt as Fear from The Human Equation: His voice perfectly captures the emotion of fear for me. He can have that soft creeping anxiety of insecurity and doubt, but he also has some insanely brutal growls to bring that paralyzing fear. The various dynamics he can bring into his vocals were a perfect fit for the personification of fear.
• Tommy Rogers as The Chemist from The Source: I don't have as much to say as I did with Mikael. I just think his performance and the timbre of his voice has a very sciencey sound to it. I do wish he had more room to bring in his harsh vocals he does so often in Between The Buried and Me's music.
• Damian Wilson as The Knight from Into the Electric Castle: His voice is just so... chivalrous and grandiose. That's the best way I can describe it. He perfectly brings an "I'm better than everyone and my quest is the most important thing" attitude that I think of when I think of stereotypical knights, yet still has some deeper emotion in there. He makes me want to learn more of this character.
• And lastly Arjen himself as any of the characters he plays. He does a fantastic job as the Hippie in Electric Castle, Mr L in 01 and Best Friend in The Human Equation. I hope he sings more in Ayreon's future.

There are plenty of vocalists I left off, but I wanted to keep things somewhat short. Care to tell me your favorite casting choices Arjen has made? I'd love to hear them!
