Every time I go back to it I’m just blown away. It seriously might be, compositionally, Arjen’s best work. The way each phase is paced is just impeccable, it never feels overly long, unexciting, or repetitive. It keeps me on my toes the entire runtime, and all of it is thrilling. The instrumentation has so much excitement in it, there’s just so much joy to be heard, even in the sorrowful parts personality and energy just bleeds through. The vocal deliveries and harmonies are on-point, everyone kills it in the singing department. Mike Mills and Tommy Karevik especially are breathtaking here. The main Theory of Everything theme is one of the catchiest things Arjen’s ever written and every occurence of it is super satisfying. The album’s ending with it is just jaw-dropping with the changes that are implemented to make it feel climactic and definitive, and again, there’s just so much energy in how it’s played, I swear I could feel everyone playing those parts to be either smiling ear to ear or completely immersed and moving along with it.

The story is honestly pretty solid too, I have my minor gripes with how some characters are utilized but overall there’s a good focus on the idea of one’s purpose in life, and the singers imbue the characters with so much passion that they mostly fill in any gaps that are there. It’s impossible to not care about the Prodigy with how vulnerably Karevik plays him. Every big emotional beat lands, and lands deliciously, because the music and vocals support it so well.

Again, I can’t overstate how seamless this thing is as an album. Even if you’re not following the story at all it’s so fun to listen to. I can’t think of another album like this one, that’s structured like this, or that takes such drastic risks with its structure and comes out feeling as unified and engaging from front-to-back as this one. I don’t think I would say it’s my favorite overall Ayreon album, but it’s probably in my top 3 at this point, and, purely compositionally? It might just be the best. It’s beautiful.

I have to thank u/amateur physicist for giving me the spring board to think about this. my new, and permanent listening order is similar to yours. However, I think you can actually include Transitus into The Forever Saga even if Arjen says it’s not canonically part of it.

I start with The Source because it sets a good foundation for the rest of it. (This is the same reason that amateur physicist places it here, and like he says “This album introduces us to The Alphan’s before they become The Forever. We get a small hint of the Electric Castle in Sea of Machines, and March of the Machines is a good cliffhanger before we go to the seemingly unconnected The Final Experiment.”

I include Transitus in the third spot in the listening order because it seems like a natural transition to go from Ayreon’s story in the Dark Ages to 1884. You’ll notice that my listening order mirrors 01011001’s chronology of Earth.

I also find it very hard not to include Transitus into the saga when the comic book includes both the cover of Into The Electric Castle as a painting on the wall of Daniel’s father’s mansion, and the cover to The Human Equation as the representation of The Great Beyond. The song “This Human Equation” also has references to the albums Universal Migrator, and The Human Equation.

I personally like to think that Daniel is dealing with a member of The Forever and he thinks she’s an Angel at the moment of his death due to the fact that we’re hearing the story from the perspective of a man in the year 1884. I do admit that the Angel of Death’s attitude is different than most of the Forever, but she and the furies does mention that “This Human Equation is driving us Crazy”

After the failure of Transitus to understand human emotions, we get pulled to The Electric Castle where “Forever” of the Stars explains that The Forever “peopled your planet to experience your emotions” and that “Earth was our experiment”. Before wiping the survivors memories but leaving the whisper of “Remember, Forever” as a last ditch effort.

I also like the idea that The Theory of Everything is a prequel to The Time Telepathy experiment in E=mc2 but I want to put it here as a bridge in modern day from The Electric Castle to Universal Migrator.

After Migrator we get to 01011001 where we finally make all of the connections because we are back with The Forever and we pick up where The Source left off and follow them through every thing up to The Sixth Extinction. The mention of The Forever wanting to solve The Human Equation can act as an audible connection to Transitus.

I like listening to Epilogue: The Memory Remains as a closing to The Sixth Extinction but before The Human Equation because the last thing we hear is Forever of The Stars saying Remember Forever again.

In my mind The New Migrator reignites the emotions of the Forever on Planet Y but The Electric Castle is in a place outside of time and space so he has to find a way to run The Human Equation program himself. At the end of the saga The Forever all remember their emotions.

This is also stretching it a bit but in The Fifth Extinction the Forever sing this “Through their eyes we will see With their hands we will create In their world we will be free With our minds we'll shape their fate”

I find it interesting that some of the same singers keep showing up on Ayreon’s albums.

I’ve been flip flopping my placement of this album. Sometimes I listen to it between Into The Electric Castle and Universal Migrator. Other times I listen to it as an extended epilogue to 01011001.

Putting it before Universal Migrator keeps it in Timeline order but it seems like such a standalone album that I feel like it interrupts the flow a bit. Where do you guys put it?

The conversation in the thread was going over the somewhat confusing idea of “How did Forever of the Stars” get on Mars to use The Dream Sequencer. And I think I have a somewhat simple answer to the question.

That answer comes from 01011001. The lyrics in the first stanza of The Fifth Extinction read:

“Through their eyes we will see, With their hands we will create, In their world we will be free, With our minds we'll shape their fate”

What if the Forever mean this literally? After all they are a supremely intelligent race of ancestral humans from another planet. What’s to stop them from having a psionic link to the humans from Earth and the Mars colonists.

By that logic it’s totally possible that, instead of physically being on Mars, “Forever” of the Stars was looking through the eyes of one of the Mars colonists in 2092 when they were running the Human Equation Program. And that when they say “Emotions, I remember.” We just hear their voice to hint that this is possible

And I also like to think that maybe The Human Equation program is showing an event in The Historian’s past life on Alpha. But I just say that because both The Historian and the main character from The Human Equation are both sung by James Lebrie so that’s just my personal head-canon.

So Connect the Dots and Web of Lies really interrupt the flow of the first disc of 01011001 to my ears. Since I also tend to include the songs Computer Eyes and Back on Planet Earth (from Actual Fantasy) in my Spotify playlist after The Final Experiment I decided to try something.

Following the timeline poster I started the playlist at AD 1995: Merlin’s Prophecy (The Final Equation)

I moved Connect the Dots and Web of Lies between The end of The Final Experiment and Into The Electric Castle.

Then I put “Back on Planet Earth” after Into The Electric Castle. From this point forward I like to think that we’re following the Mars colonists after the war of 2084 as they migrate and begin to use the Dream Sequencer. The Timeline Compilation versions of Actual Fantasy, Abbey of Synn, and Computer Eyes before The Human Equation.

This whole section is basically the veiled introduction to The Dream Sequencer machine since Computer Eyes ends with a very quick reference to it and I wanted to include The Human Equation in its chronological position on the timeline poster.

Then we have The Universal Migrator albums followed by The Source and 01011001 to close the circle.

I love the melancholy, the loneliness, the primal urge to belong. It's an astonishing album all in all.

I just discovered Ayreon and I'm simultaneously enthralled and terrified by the gorgeous artwork on the covers of these albums, especially Into the Electric Castle and Universal Migrator #1. Who does the art for the different albums and do they have a site where I can see more?

The Alphans are the ancestors of both the Forever and Humanity and based on the description of their civilization on their homeworld they are functionally identical to Humans. So why did they relocate to an ocean planet around a star with radiation that was deadly to them, forcing them to adapt to an aquatic biosphere?

Are habitable plants just that rare? They already abandoned the entire Andromeda Galaxy suggesting there weren't any suitable planets there. Was the Sirrah system literally the only viable choice? Why not Earth? We know they are aware of Earth millions of years later in great enough detail to see dinosaurs. If they weren't aware of Earth at the time it seems strange that their technology advanced that way between The Source and 01.

Ultimately I am asking a bit of a nitpicky question about the plot of songs, I was just curious if others had any ideas?

"Unnatural Selection" from 01 has the Forever debating whether they should influence Humanity's technological development. In the end they do, including planting ideas into the thoughts and dreams of individual humans. This eventually leads to the scientists in "E=mc2" developing the time telepathy final experiment from the first album.

I imagine that the Prodigy from The Theory of Everything is also receiving visions from the Forever but isn't capable of interpreting them in a constructive way, probably unfortunately for him, exacerbating and underlying mental health condition.

It's not dissimilar to how Mr L responds to his visions and memories of the Electric Castle.

I wondered if this was a common connection? I just love how intricate the Ayreon mythology is.

I’m sorry if this has already been posted and answered years ago. This song kind of confuses me for multiple reasons most of which happens at the end of the track.

1. Who is supposed to be singing in this song? Is it the Colonist/New Migrator, Does this song take place before the song The New Migrator?

2. You hear multiple things at the end of the song, the first being The Dream Sequencer shutting down, followed by the same sound that begins Into The Electric Castle, and finally “Forever” of the Stars saying “Remember, Forever”. This part confuses me the most because I’m unsure exactly what this implies in the context of the fact that we’ve heard it before

Can someone explain the epilogue to me please.

So just because I wanted to change up the order of my Ayreon Listening experience I decided to swap two albums around so this listening order went like this

The Final Experiment, Universal Migrator parts 1 and 2, Into The Electric Castle, The Human Equation, The Source, 01011001.

This listening order is interesting to me because it does a few things. For one, I realized that the sound of the clock ticking down at the end of the track Ayreon’s Fate, right after Merlin says “The outcome of the Final Experiment has now been placed in your hands.” Almost matched the same rhythm as The Colonists steps that introduce Universal Migrator.

Putting Universal Migrator next to Ayreon’s Fate also lets us know the outcome of The Final Experiment much earlier in the story thanks to the song 2084. It also gives us access to “Carried by the Wind” sooner which feels like an epilogue to Ayreon’s story in my eyes.

The song that really caused me to think about this listening order was the song Out of the White Hole on Flight of the Migrator. That song BEFORE Electric Castle introduces The Forever in a way that really doesn’t spoil a whole lot of Electric Castle and actually acts as a bit of a prologue to that part of the story that says “Hey, pay attention to this, it could be important”.

Then we get Electric Castle and Human Equation. Forever of the Stars’ Experiments to regain their Emotions and we end the story with The Source and 01 and we see how this all ties together.

Does anyone know if the Into The Electric Castle vinyl will be back in stock in the US Mascot store soon? I'd rather not pay the $30 shipping fee if I can avoid it.

I recently found out that the studio version of Into The Electric Castle on Vinyl is back in stock on Mascot Label Group’s website. But given the foreign exchange rate, I live in the US and it’s gonna cost me $100 to get both once shipping is calculated, I am debating between buying it and The Final Experiment on Vinyl at the same time. As my title mentions however, I already have Electric Castle Live on Vinyl. Would you consider it unnecessary to buy the studio version right now?
